Movie Review: Big Miracle – it’s based on a true story

My youngest girl (age six) and I saw a screening of Big Miracle (Universal Pictures) last Saturday. Below is a quick summary of the film. Continue reading for the full movie review.

The 411 for Big Miracle

The story	The film is about three trapped whales and how a group of people tried to save the whales
Appropriateness for children	No sexual content or bloody scenes, and I don’t recall any bad language. However, the movie is a drama and might be a little boring for very young kids.
Positives	Interesting story (based on a true story) Good special effects — the whales were not real, but they looked real in the movie Film is better than the trailers
Negatives	Humor is a little forced Predictable — especially if you remembered the story when it was in the news
Release date	February 3, 2012
Rating	Rated PG for a little tension
Runtime	107 minutes
Category	Light drama

I’m not sure if she’s telling me my Valentine gifts suck or if she wants me to get her something from her list. Probably both — she did tell me her taste is very different from mine, which is another way of saying it would never occur to me that my wife would want a pair of $50 flip flops.

My toddler loves Thomas & Friends and he loves this DVD too — especially the first episode, which features a giraffe. My son calls the giraffe big, and he likes to tell me how the giraffe won’t lie down and how it ate all the apples. My son is so cute when he tells me about the DVD. He acts as if I haven’t watch the DVD with him a hundred billion times already. It’s hard to believe that just a month ago, he could barely talk at all.

PointHub contacted me last week about doing a write-up of their free service and hosting a giveaway on my dad blog (I’m giving away a $25 American Express gift card). To be honest, I had never heard of PointHub until they emailed me. From looking around their website, I’ve learned that PointHub lets people search and book flights and hotels. PointHub is kinda like Travelocity, Orbitz, Hotwire, and Expedia. But unlike those services, PointHub gives parents side-by-side comparisons between purchase price and rewards points for airlines and hotels. Not only can travelers see a comparison, they can also book with either credit card or with frequent flyer miles and reward points. Now that’s convenient.

I wish they would’ve sent me a whole case. I could eat those little pieces all day. The new Hershey’s Milk Chocolate with Almonds Pieces feature Hershey’s milk chocolate with a whole almond in each piece, covered in a crunchy hard shell. I also like the re-sealable bag because even though I could eat them all day long (the candy, not the bag), I can’t eat them all in one sitting without getting a tummy ache and getting in trouble with my wife.

Movie Review: The Darkest Hour – the aliens are invisible, so’s my interest

I saw a screening of The Darkest Hour (Summit Entertainment) last night. It’s a sci-fi movie about a bunch of invisible aliens invading Earth. Bottom line: the film looked promising when the aliens invaded within the first 15 minutes of the story. But then the movie became predictable and there was very little suspense. If you want to see a recent movie about aliens invading Earth, you’re better off watching Cowboys & Aliens on DVD. The Darkest Hour opens on Christmas day. The 89-minute movie is rated PG-13 for violence and language.

Review: War Horse – something was lost in the translation

My son and I saw a screening of War Horse (DreamWorks Pictures) last week. The movie is based on the War Horse book written by Michael Morpurgo, but does not follow the book completely. The film is about the up and down life of a horse in the first world war. Bottom line: it’s an excellent and mostly realistic story. The movie has a feel good ending, but it’s also a bit depressing at times. War Horse (Facebook | Twitter) rides into theaters on Christmas Day. The movie is rated PG-13 for war violence, but is not gory.

Review: The Adventures of Tintin

My youngest daughter and I saw a screening of The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn last weekend. The animated movie is based on a series of comic books created by Belgian artist Hergé (Georges Remi). Bottom line: the animation is great, the adventure is interesting, but my six year old daughter fidgeted throughout the movie. My guess is that The Adventures of Tintin will appeal more to fans of the comic books than people who have never read the books or seen the cartoon series. The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn (Paramount Pictures) opens in theaters in the U.S. today (December 21, 2011). The 107-minute film is rated PG for violence, drunkenness and brief smoking.

Review: Rise of the Planet of the Apes DVD

I received the Rise of the Planet of the Apes DVD for review on my dad blog. The film is a prequel to the 2001 release of Planet of the Apes. The first movie takes place in the future, and ended with the main character crash landing on Earth. But in the Earth of the future, apes are the dominated species and humans are slaves. Bottom line: I love the special effects in Rise of the Planet of the Apes. The apes looked so realistic. I also thought the story was excellent. And even though the movie is science fiction, I thought the storyline was very plausible. Holiday Idea: Redbox Movie and Video Game Rental

School is out until next year, so we decided to hold a fun night for the kids. They’ve been pretty good about doing home work (the oldest child got straight A’s) so we rewarded them with a fun night of video games and movies. Our local Blockbuster is no longer open, so we went to a nearby Redbox kiosk, which we found via their website. This was the first time we used Redbox and found their rental and return process fairly easy. I think Redbox is a great and easy way to host a fun night with friends and family. It’s also a convenient way to entertain the kids during the winter break. BTW, read on to find out about Redbox’s 12 Days of Deals and Prizes promotion.

I received a copy of Dolphin Tale for review on my dad blog. The kids and I actually saw Dolphin Tale (Warner Bros. Entertainment) at the theater last summer. My youngest daughter and I saw a movie screening of Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked (20th Century Fox) last weekend. Chipwrecked is the third movie in the Chipmunks series. Bottom line: little ones will like Chipwrecked for the cute Chipmunks and Chipettes, the singing and the humor. Dads and moms will probably like this movie too if they like the first two Chipmunks films. On the other hand, if parents didn’t like the first two movies, they probably won’t like this one either. My youngest daughter (age six) loved it. I thought it was better than the second movie, but not as good as the first one. Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked opens today. The 87-minute movie is rated G.

The boxset features three discs: Barney’s Night Before Christmas Movie, Barney: Christmas Star, and HIT Favorites: Frosty Friends. The first two disks are like the typical Barney DVDs. They feature kids singing and dancing with the lovable dinosaurs. The third disk, Frosty Friends, is the one my kids enjoyed the most. 2011 Holiday Gift Idea – Video Games Edition

Sonic Generations (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, 3DS)
This is a fun game for the entire family. My kids really love this video game. I’ve never played a Sonic game before or watched an episode of the TV show. So it’s safe for me to say, you can still have a blast without knowing anything about the little hedgehog. The Sonic Generations video game kinda reminded me of Super Mario, but at a much faster pace. The Xbox version of this game is $50.89, the PS3 version is $55.32, and the PC version is $29.95. There’s also a Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Generations for $59.99.

The new Ice Age movie from Twentieth Century Fox is short (only 27 minutes long). It’s more of a special feature than an actual movie. Bottom line: I thought the animated feature was humorous, but my kids thought it was hilarious. Here’s a holiday gift idea: a Waterpik Traveler Water Flosser (giveaway info below). You can stop rolling your eyes now. I know very few people want a water flosser for Christmas, but it’s a useful gift for someone that is into flossing or someone that has gum problems. I’m one of those someone. I brush my teeth two to three times a day, and floss daily. In theory, I should have a great set of gum. I don’t. According to my dentist, I have periodontal disease and I need a deep cleaning. A deep cleaning costs about $1000 ($250 per quadrant). For that kind of money, the service should also include multiple massages by Victoria’s Secret models. It doesn’t.

Review and Giveaway: The Froggy Hop CD

I received a copy of The Froggy Hop CD for review and giveaway on my dad blog. The Froggy Hop is The Chickadees’ latest CD. Their first album, Songs from the Great Outdoors, won a Parent’s Choice award. The group is fronted by former Atlantic Records artist, Mary Karlzen. Other members of The Chickadees include Anjl Rodee, Carmen Nickerson and Rosie Dempree. Bottom line: the CD made me feel like I was back in outdoor school and reminded me of Earth Day. The eleven songs have a nice beat, and are fun to sing along with. The Froggy Hop is available now for $10.
