When a physician is treating a patient in an intensive care unit, nurses are more than partners. They're also human safety checklists. Are the right medicines and equipment on hand? Has the patient consented to the procedure? Did the doctor wash his hands? Purdue nursing students are testing a new way to learn that role -- a virtual intensive care unit, or ICU, an immersive 3-D environment created at ITaP's Envision Center for Data Perceptualization.

Cleveland Shields, associate professor and RCHE affiliated faculty, and his team have received a five-year, $2.7 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to study patient and physician communication to improve interactions during physician visits and empower patients to participate actively in their care.

Director named for center to help Indiana doctors go electronic

Purdue University's Healthcare Technical Assistance Program has named Monica Arrowsmith director of a new center to help Indiana primary-care doctors adopt electronic record and e-prescribing technology. Arrowsmith is heading the Indiana Health Information Technology Extension Center (I-HITEC), funded by a $12 million American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grant. Most recently she was chief quality officer and legal counsel for Lafayette's Clarian Arnett Health.

Taking care: Study links health literacy and self-care in heart failure patients

Heart failure patients with higher health literacy are more likely to engage in self-care behaviors. Funded by an RCHE seed grant, the explores multiple care settings and lays the groundwork for subsequent phases that explore tailoring patient education based on health literacy.
