Competition!

Some of the subscribers might have missed the competition I added to last Friday’s cartoon, so I’ve added it to the blog as well. Simply fill in the blanks for whatever topic the emperor is being duped by now. You can either post your script in the comments section or download the blank template, add your script and email it to me at noel@djbogtrotter.co.uk (if you want to match fonts, I use Digital Strip for the dialogue and Helvetica Neue Condensed Bold for the headline. But don’t sweat it, something handwritten will be fine). Best entry (as chosen by me) gets a free print of any of my comics. Closing date is Friday 26th March. Good luck!

Over the last 18 months, as well as scribbling out the odd cartoon, I’ve been working on a storybook for my kids. I put a lot of hours into creating it and believed I had made the best of my fairly basic drawing skills to produce a fun, exciting story – a time travelling adventure involving dinosaurs and Egyptian mummies. I finally managed to finish it off and sent it off for internet publishing (Blurb, if you’re interested – they did a pretty good job). I waited eagerly for the package to arrive and my kids, who I hadn’t told exactly what I had been up to, knew that something was coming. At last, the book arrived and, after months of just publishing stuff online, it really was a treat to hold one of my creations in my hands. After dinner that night, I sat my son and daughter down in our living room and showed them what I had made for them. Their reaction was somewhat less than the giddy excitement I’d been hoping for. I persevered and got ready to read it to them. (”Do we have to read it now?” whined Fergal. “Yes”, I replied.) After we’d finished, I asked them if they liked it. “S’alright” was Niamh’s mumbled reply, whilst Fergal’s was a more direct “No. Can we put the Wii back on now?” Rather crestfallen, I shuffled off and left them to their video games.

However, I should’ve known better than to put my kids on the spot with such a direct question. Niamh is already reaching the age where she doesn’t want to be seen to be too enthusiastic and Fergal is a contrary wee bugger at the best of times (I don’t know where he gets that from). Within the week, they’d both asked me to read it again and it’s now become part of our regular reading, as they both now love it. Although Niamh has pointed out that she actually never stands with her hands behind her back like I’ve drawn her on the cover (and she’s right too – I should make review all my work). Yes, this is a real thing. Find out more about the abominable objects here. They also go under the name of ‘The Snuggie’. Are people now so lazy, that using a blanket is a hassle? Okay, don’t answer that. I guess we already know. And have people no self respect. I mean, what kind of doofus thinks they look good in one of these things? Oh, right.

My lovely wife helped with the writing on this one, so big shout out to my main sham, Alison (thanks my dear).

I can’t believe I’ve been running this webcomic for over a year now and I still haven’t recommended Dr McNinja to you all. How remiss of me. Let me correct that oversight right now by suggesting you move your mouse to here, y’know, if it’s not too much effort. You’d be missing out on a real treat if you don’t. If you’ve never seen it before, you’ll have to to go to the start of a story for it to make any sense.

This a basically how hard I find it to resist the temptation to fill my webcomic with terrible terrible puns. But resist I do (usually) for you guys. I do it for you. (In case you’re not familar with the unfinished jokes, check them out here.)

I know the world and his wife has linked to it recently, but I just couldn’t risk one of you missing out on the wonder that is Axecop – a webcomic written by a five-year-old and illustrated by his (much) older brother. And yes, it is as good as it sounds, possibly better.

This week’s webcomic recommendation is, I believe, what is generally termed as a “grower”. Every time I read John Allison’s Bad Machinery, I like it more and more. Especially his pitch perfect ear for that most elusive of things, “teenage dialogue”. Check it out (and give it time).

Last year a friend of a friend asked me to collaborate on a couple of cartoons about Glastonbury. She had scripted some ideas out and wanted me to illustrate them. The plan was to try and get them in to one of the summer festival guides. Unfortunately, they didn’t get picked up, so I thought I’d share them with you now. Although my drawing style is still pretty basic, I feel like I’ve gotten a little bit better at drawing fingers since then.

Whoa, Tetris last week and this week a regime that was toppled nearly ten years ago. Finger. On. The. Pulse. By the way, the reporter is my fairly ham-fisted attempt at a caricature of a former NBC foreign correspondent, who I worked with briefly, many years ago. He is still fighting the good fight at Sky Reporter (see if you can guess who it is, before you click on the link).

This week I’d like to doff my cap, let loose a few hearty harumphs and utter, “Good work, sir” in the direction of EQ Comics.
