While I longed to have them, mine always would split, crack and simply wouldn't grow strong and long. Not a fan of the fake ones, I either wanted nice natural nails or nothing at all. Those of us who are prone to brittle nails needn't throw our hands up, however. There are ways, I have learned, to get those much-envied nails with a little help from science and nature.

Showering and bathing in hot water only dries it out further. If you feel your skin starting to get rough, scaly or flaky, consider switching from your regular body lotion to a thicker, cream formula through the cold season. Luxuriously moisturizing body creams or body butters are available in numerous scents (or non-scents) and make great stocking stuffers for the holidays.

Acne is a fact of life for about 45 million young adults between ages 12 and 24, as well as millions more adults in their 20's, 30's and even 40s. Hormones are generally the culprit. Starting an overall acne regimen is a good idea if you have an ongoing problem.

If you do nothing else to care for your skin, you should at least make sure to wash it every day (morning and evening) with a good cleanser to keep it free of pore-clogging dirt, oil and makeup and damaging free radicals. A good cleanser doesn't necessarily need to be expensive; it just needs to be right for your skin type and/or condition. If you are uncertain or have what is simply referred to as "normal" skin, there are a number of good basic cleansers that work on all skin types. If you're over the age of 40 (sometimes younger), you may notice the beginnings of "crow's feet," those annoying little wrinkles and lines that branch off from the corners of the eyes, as well as dark circles and bags under the eyes. All of these things contribute to an overall "tired" look, even when you're sleepy.

Adding a mask (or masque) to your skin care regimen a few times a week can give your skin an extra healthy boost, whether for anti-aging, moisturizing, acne control or cleansing. Plus, putting on a good mask gives you that pampering "spa" feeling right in your own bathroom. There are masks available for every skin type and condition. Just be sure to read the ingredients and choose one that is ideally suited for your skin.

With the humidity decreasing outside and dry, heated air sucking the moisture out indoors, the winter can leave you feeling like a reptile with scaly, flaky skin. On the extreme end, some people may even exhibit patches of eczema, a chronic dry skin condition that often worsens in winter.
