To really enjoy cycling, it’s important to find a bicycle that works for you. Here are some things to keep in mind when you’re in the market for a new bike:

The Right Ride
In general, bikes are broken down into three major categories:

• Road and Racing Bikes–As a general rule, road and racing are built for speed and longer distances on paved surfaces. Thinner tires, lightweight 29-inch (700c) wheels and drop bars that allow for a more aerodynamic position are the norm. Most road bikes, regardless of price, offer many gears for tackling both hilly and flat terrain.
• Mountain Bikes–With their larger tires, hill-friendly gearing and upright position, mountain bikes are very popular for all types of riding, both on pavement and off. Mountain bikes that are designed specifically for rugged trail use typically feature a suspension fork. Some may have rear suspension, as well. A quick change of the tires on any mountain bike–even one that you use regularly on trails–adds to its versatility and makes it a worthy street machine.
• Comfort/Cruiser Bikes–For tooling around on bike paths, light trails, or for cruising a quiet beach-side lane, comfort/cruiser bikes are the ticket. With a super-relaxed riding position, padded seats, and limited or no gearing, these bikes are made for enjoying the scenery and having fun with the family.

The Right Price
A bike’s price boils down to three essentials: frame materials, bike weight, and component quality and durability.

• Entry-level–You’ll find a wide range of comfort and cruiser bikes in this category, as well as some lower-end mountain bikes and road bikes. Most will have steel frames and components that are designed to last for several years with frequent use.
• Mid-range–Bikes in this range may feature a lighter aluminum frame with mid-range components that keep performing after miles of use. The Right Size
Fit is crucial for comfort, control, and proper power and endurance on a bike. Here are some basic bike fit tips:

• Stand-over Height–To find out if a bike’s overall height fits your body, measure your inseam. Next, determine how much clearance you’ll need between your crotch and the top tube of the bike. For a mountain bike, you’ll want three to five inches of clearance. A road bike should offer between one and two inches of clearance, while a commuter bike should have two to four inches. Compare the stand-over height for a given bike to your measurements (inseam + clearance) to determine the right bike height.
• Top Tube Length–You can measure your torso to get a good estimate of proper top tube length. First, make a fist and extend your arm. Measure from the center of your fist to the end of your collarbone (the part that intersects your shoulder). Next, measure your torso by placing a book against your crotch with the spine facing up. Measure from the spine to the bottom of your throat (the spot between your collarbones). Finally, add the two measurements (arm length + torso length), divide the number in half and subtract six inches. This is your approximate top tube length. Compare this number to a bike’s posted top tube length. You can allow for about two inches longer or shorter, as most bikes can be adjusted via stem length/height and saddle fore/aft position to make fine adjustments to the fit.
• Bikes for Women–Proportionally, women tend to have a shorter torso and longer legs than men. Bike makers design women’s bikes that offer a shorter top tube and many comfort/cruiser bikes built for women may also provide more stand-over clearance.

Bought this bike for my 10 year old daughter. She has problems riding a 2 wheel bike. The bike arrived on time. There was alot of damage to the box. There were large scratches on body of bike. They will rust if not fixed by me. There was damage to both fenders. One was bent to the point it rubbed the tire. Dad fixed it. Just could not send it back, she would have been very upset. Good thing Dad works at an automotive parts store. So, he could easily fix the problems. Oh, part of the chain was missing. Be aware may not get there in the best shape. She loves the bike and found it easy to ride.

Product was delivered in a smashed retaped box which looked like it had been dropped from an airplane. If it were not for the quality of the packing it would have been completely ruined but did receive a dented fender and some scratches. Great bike almost destroyed by careless handling.

This bike is a really great bike. However, the parts came in a box which was damaged and missing at least one nut. Otherwise, the bike rides great for my 8 year old son.

Using the optional tandem add-on, you can use Air-Navigator for two children.

When your child is ready for biking, a simple on/off switch (located under the Kettler logo on the handlebar stem) unlocks the front steering stem and the Air-Navigator operates as a standard freewheel tricycle with coaster brake stopping. I purchased this for my 2 1/2 year old son and he loves it, as do I. First off, I read reviews before purchasing and some complained that it was difficult to assemble. I found it very easy to assemble, as long as you follow the directions. This trike has so many great features that ensure use for many years. The frame is so sturdy and with the limited turn radius I have no fear of this thing tipping as I would on some lesser models from othe manufacturers. The freewheeling front wheel, parental pushbar, handlebar lock and rear navigation allow me to push him around the neighborhood with ease, sort of like a stroller. If want a quality product that will last through the years ( I am sure my next child will be using this as well) definitly pick a Kettler.

Maybe I didn’t assemble it very well, but we have had a lot of problems with this trike. We got it when my daughter was around 18 months. She really enjoyed being pushed around in it as an alternative to the stroller on the way to the park (we live in NYC). But it never really felt right: wheel lock system never really worked well; the wheels don’t move as easily as they should when the pedals are pushed; the handlebars and front wheel get misaligned and I need to re-align them; the front wheel is getting detached on one side; the bucket came off the back. Honestly, this may be all my fault. I thought I assembled everything correctly (it took 30 min) but I may not have. Anyway, now that she is turning 3, I am buying the Schwinn Roadster. It seems like it will feel a lot more stable/sturdy, and it looks like a big girl’s bike instead of a plastic toy.

Customer Review: Don’t Buy a Bike Online
I have always been happy with products from Amazon, but there are too many things that can go wrong with ordering a bike sight unseen. It may simply be that Fedex mis-handled the item in transit. I was not happy to find it had been delivered in a monsoon while I was away for the day, they did nothing to protect it from the rain so it was soaked. The box disintegrated. The chain would not stay on, and the pedal was bent and couldn’t turn 360 degrees, paint was scratched- already returned, or was it new? I returned it and will try to find a replacement gift on Christmas Eve, wish me luck.
