I just got back from an amazing power photo shoot in one of Miami’s hottest spots with photographer Tom Carsons & production manager Rainer Lind from the Global Hair and Fashion Group. It was, how do you say, tres magnifique! Celebrity Stylist, Candy Shaw Codner, owner of Jamison Shaw Hairdressers, organized this great spring/summer power shoot with other top hairstylists. Candy was named one of the most published stylists in North America with a multitude of images appearing in nearly 100 magazines annually. Candy received the “Award of Excellence” from Intercoiffure Mondial for her outstanding contributions to the organization and was named the international “Personality of the Year”.

I assisted Coral Pleas, Master Stylist and salon owner of Cutting Loose Salon, at the photo shoot. Coral had two professional models to work with for the day, and she transformed them both from boring and stale to beautifully coiffed and textured. Coral's work will be published in the spring/summer issue of Sophisticates Hairstyle Guide and other hair magazines. My time in Miami was like walking on a dream. As I was assisting, I watched the other successful hairstylists who joined us from around the United States. They all brought with them their own great tricks of the trade. As an aspiring stylist, it was truly an honor to observe and assist the talented stylists at the photo shoot in Miami. Thank You Coral for inviting me to enjoy an amazing experience!!

On February 18th, Cutting Loose had the privilege to work with The Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center (SPARCC) at their Annual Fashion show at the Ritz Carlton. Four stylists, Jaclyn Fallon, Yvonne Armstrong, Nikki Baldun, and Cheyanne Preston, styled the hair on ten models that strutted their stuff on the run way. SPARCC hosts this annual luncheon that brings together about 2,000 ladies for a great cause. Before the lunch begins, the guests are invited to shop at the Treasure Chest. The Treasure Chest is a store sells a variety of donated items and all of the proceeds go towards funding programs for SPARCC. The models in the show wear clothes that are from the Treasure Chest, and all of the items worn are for sale after the show. The stylists at Cutting Loose prepared the models' hair prior to show time. During the show there are three wardrobe changes. Our talented stylists were put to the test, for each wardrobe change required a different hairstyle and all of this happens in 3 minutes time. The event is great fun and a great way for us at Cutting Loose to give our time and show off our work on stage.

February 24th was a night to remember! Cutting Loose Salon celebrated our 2nd year anniversary and After Hours grand opening! We had such a great turn out (over 200 guests!). There was food on the tables, balloons filling the ceilings, and beer and wine in the shampoo bowls. Cutting Loose had a wine specialist from Urban Flats who offered wine tastings and delicious flats, chocolate delicacies from Dove Chocolate Discoveries, and appetizers from Stonewood. The designing stations were set up into raffle stations that included gift certificates and baskets from Let’s Eat, Fast’n’Fresh, Casa di Pizza, Luxury Nails, Melody’s skin and body, Lil Divas and Dudes, Fresh Market, and Ed’s tavern. We raised over $250 with all the proceeds going to the Haiti Relief Fund. The grand opening of Afterhours was bigger than we could have imagined. The guests were excited to see the new salon with a new, refreshing, and urban feel. At the designing stations, the Rising Stars and Stylists offered “Primp Before You Party” where guests could get their hair fluffed and make-up touched up. World of Beer brought three of their best beers for tastings; while Freshmarket, Sarasota Brewing Company, and Pei Wei offered delicous appetizers, treats, and coffee. At the end of the night we had one last raffle for a $100 gift card for Cutting Loose. Overall this event was truly amazing. We would love to thank all of our sponsors, vendors, and guests. Without all of you this special night wouldn’t have been such a great success!

When Coral Pleas isn’t cultivating a stable of talented and hip hair stylists and styling the manes of Sarasota’s movers and shakers, the salon owner is searching for the most well coiffed pony at Sarasota Polo Club. Coiffe is a term used to describe a style of arranging or combing the hair.

Cutting Loose will sponsor the most well coiffed pony and its player every Sunday this polo season. The salon is filled with some of Sarasota’s most talented coiffures so the tongue in cheek reference was too much fun to resist. The most well coiffed pony really is determined by his player, although there is something to be said about being the most well coiffed attendee at polo matches.

Phillip Lim's previous runway shows have skewed heavily toward the fairer sex. This season, Lim decided, it was "time to give props to 50 percent of the population." For his first-ever all-men's presentation, Lim set up vignettes of models lounging in austere plywood and plaster boxes, set to the music of a single piano player. Matching that feeling was the sober palette of blacks, navies, slates, and camels. In fact, it was an altogether fall feeling. "Spring isn't about bright color for me," said Lim. "And besides, guys wear black and navy all year."

Lim's intent was to take the stuffiness out of traditional menswear colors. His inspiration was the way the beatniks "imbued traditional masculinity with a sense of transparency and vulnerability." The movement, he said, was also about "stripping away what was unnecessary." That explained the plywood boxes. But to my eye at least, the clothes evoked a more familiar Lim reference point: eighties-era Bowie. Low-breaking jackets; cropped, cull-cut trousers, graph-paper check, and borderline fragile footwear were certainly more Bowie than beat. Open toes perhaps notwithstanding, the accessories were again the standout of Lim's menswear, from suede mod boots to leather-wrapped key pendants

Before I get into all the hairstyle tippage, I just have to geek out for a second: When I spotted Kim Kardashian backstage at the Catherine Malandrino show at New York Fashion Week, she pretty much stopped me in my tracks. Kim's skin and makeup looked totally flawless, and her hair was so shiny that I almost needed my sunglasses. The Bumble and Bumble hair team is responsible for her sexy 'do, so I immediately asked them for all the scoop. "I wanted to give Kim a glamorous, pretty, old-Hollywood style that played up her classically beautiful features," Bumble and Bumble stylist Rolando Beauchamp told me. "To start, I applied Bumble and Bumble Thickening Hairspray to Kim's damp hair and created a very deep, very straight side part with a fine-toothed comb. I then used a large round brush to blow out her hair in sections, making sure each section of hair was exactly the same width as the round brush. That's the key to achieving the smooth, glassy finish." Easy, right? I want to run home right now and try Rolando's tip myself, but before I do, here's one last hairstyle tip for my fellow Kardashian fans: Rolando used velvet-coated hot rollers called Remington Protect & Shine Rollers to create Kim's bodacious curls. Cease and desist using any Paul Mitchell or Bumble and Bumble products bought in your local drug stores such as Target, Publix, or Walmart. WHY ??????

Product diversion is the ugly side of the beauty industry. Diversion is product being sold outside of its authorized chain of distribution.

Well, you see, if you read carefully the bottles tell you the products are only guaranteed when sold by salon professionals. You wouldn't trust the bag boy to cut and style your hair, so why would you trust him to recommend the right products for your unique fabric. The point is if you don't get your hair cut at the grocery store why would you buy your products there. Not to mention your generally spending three to four dollars more buying them at the store.

Southwest, Florida - Cutting Loose Salon owner Coral Pleas is doing more than styling hair to make Sarasota a beautiful place. The Master Designer has turned her salon into an art gallery of sorts.

Since opening, the upscale and trendy salon is exhibiting the work of local artists as a way to help them thrive. Every three months, Coral chooses another artist and gives them a large wall of the salon to display their works. The selection process is quite stringent as Coral and her team of more than 15 preview multiple pieces from each artist to ensure that the work is at the highest exposure level possible. The work selected represents all mediums from photography, to oils to sketches. The pieces are displayed for the enjoyment of the customers and staff as they are placed in eye catching areas.

The latest collection features Trey Bryan, an illustration senior at Ringling School of Art and Design. Trey has received many accolades during his years at Ringling and had the honor of presenting former President Bill Clinton with an oil painting last year. Trey uses a variety of mediums to create large, bright works featuring a variety of themes. “I love to paint big, leave a mark and be confident,” Trey said.

When asked about his work Trey said, “The idea of “quantity with quality” means a lot to me, and the habit of painting big. LaDonna came to Sarasota to share this new information with us before she went to Signature Gathering in Las Vegas. What is that, you may ask? Signature Gathering is a weekend of learning, play, and inspiration as 3,000 hairstylists, salon owners and distributors gather together at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas for the ultimate educational experience.

LaDonna taught us the newest haircut styles and color techniques. Not only that - remember the classic perm? It's all about texture! We've learned the latest styles in waving systems and different approaches to create and soften texture. And just when we thought they couldn't be any more amazing, we've got even more new ways to use our existing Paul Mitchell ProTools that you've all come to know and love!

We are so excited to introduce the fun, fabulous new collection from John Paul Mitchell Systems to all of our guests to make their experience here at the salon that much better!

Well, it’s Summer again here in sunny Florida! I love it, and I’m sure a lot of you ladies (and gentlemen too!) are down at the Beach. Great for a tan, but it doesn’t do much for our hair, especially if you color your hair. Just like our skin needs UV protectants, our scalp and hair do too.

Here at Cutting Loose, we have two products that I would highly recommend as a must for your hair care on the beach or in the sun.

Paul Mitchell Color Protect Locking Spray contains UV protecting sunflower extracts which protect the structure of the hair and help keep your color from fading. Spray on wet hair before blow drying to extend the life of your color and intensify shine, and maybe even a spritz or two before heading out into the sun to help condition and add moisture.

As the ladies enjoyed their Bellinis –virgin for the younger ones – we showed them how to use Express IonDry v.1 Dryers and Express IonStyle 1.0 Irons by Paul Mitchell while explaining the multiple styles you can achieve with the 1.0 including volume, curls, waves, flips, and smoothing.
