First BMW Project i Car Set for Release on 2012

BMW revealed in 2008 the plan of establishing the Project i Division which is assigned to develop technologies that can serve as solutions across its range of vehicles.

The Mini-E which was launched last year is the first baby of Project i. The electric car will be use by BMW to get the feedback of the market, especially the urban consumers, about their particular needs and wants when it comes to zero emission cars.

BMW is expected to come up with a range of zero emission units in the next few years under the bad of Megacity. The fleet will include highly efficient combustion powertrains and all electric variants.

The first unit due for release is a compact hatch which will be less expensive than the Miniand the 1 series. It appears that BMW is eyeing to produce more environment-friendly vehicles and veering away from luxury niches like the X7.

The first Project i car is aiming to meet the stricter standards set by the state of California. The three-door hatch is set to be released by 2012.

The details about the zero-emission hatchback have not been revealed. BMW hinted though that the car can accommodate four adults and will have under its hood an electric engine running on Lithium Ion batteries.

The styling of course will be dominated by the BMW styling with wide track, short overhangs, and low roofline.

There are also clues that Project i might release a motorbike, a sibling of the C1 scooter, and the next generation of Z2 roadster.

BMW continues to tease new X1 SUV

BMW has dropped four new teaser photos of the new BMW X1. The four photos turned up on the Facebook page dedicated to the vehicle.

The decision to continue with the tease campaign is somewhat unusual since virtually uncovered photos of the BMW X1 have already turned up during Nurburgring testing. Further, BMW showed off X1 prototypes during a p.r. event in Mallorca, Spain, earlier this month. Still, it is nice to see uncovered shots of the rear light cluster and the engine start button.

Several petrol and diesel engine choices on the X1 guarantees the SAV will get up to 204 hp. The xDrive all-wheel drive system will be available from launch, while the rear-wheel drive unit -dubbed sDrive- should be up for purchase a little later.

After plenty of spy pictures and official teaser images and videos the X1 will finally make a splash into the European market this autumn. Power will come from petrol and turbo diesel engines with horsepower figures of up to 204.

You'll be able to see the full reveal of the BMW X1 when the SAV takes a bow at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

BMW 5 Series GT spotted in a black color

After the recent 5 Series GT unveiling, BMW dropped their funky camouflage on the 5GT prototypes and these vehicles can be seen around several cities across Europe. Some of these GT models are used for exclusive presentations, while others are simply driven by BMW executives.
A daily reader of our BimmerToday blog, identified by the name Pousa13, has spotted the upcoming BMW 5 Series GT in Germany. We’re still a few weeks away until we might see the 5GT ourselves, but in the mean time, we have been keeping us entertained with the multiple spy photos posted on here.
And the general consensus lately is that the 5GT….doesn’t look as bad as many believed it will. We noticed that most our readers after seeing some of the most recent spy shots have started to believe in this project and actually embrace the idea of this non-conventional 5 Series model.

BMW Z4 Pricing to Start at $46,575

BMW North America has just released the U.S pricing for the new 2009 BMW Z4. As expected, there is a price increase over the previous Z4 generation, but still significantly lower than the German pricing.

The entry model, BMW Z4 sDrive30i has a base price of $46,575 and the twin-turbo powered sDrive35i jumps over the 50k mark, more specifically, $52, 475. Both prices include the Destination & Handling fee.

The Cold Weather package costs $1,000 for both models, while the Premium Package was set for the Z4 sDrive30i at $3,900 or $2,800 if you’re buying the Sport Package as well. The Premium Package for the high-end sDrive35i model costs $2,500.

The Sport Package has a more complicated pricing scheme. If you’re buying the sDrive30i or sDrive35i without the Premium options, then the Sport Package is priced at $2,300. Include the Premium and then you’re only paying $1,900.

For those of you looking for the ultimate performance on your new roadster, the 19: wheels with performance tires are priced at $1,200 (available only for the sDrive35i). The new 7-Speed double clutch transmission is available as well only for the twin-turbo engine and it will set you back $1,525.

BMW 5 Series Touring Caught Testing Once Again

It appears the next-generation BMW 5 Series code named F10 will borrow quite heavily from the 7 Series. These new spy pictures of the Touring version show a little more skin at the rear. The taillamp lenses are more visible now. Tiny peeks of brake light shots as well as the light strip from the 7 Series that goes from one end to the other can be seen.

Up front things are less obvious. Only the halo rings around the four front headlights and indicators are visible but the shape of the headlight clusters cannot be made out although the configuration of all six front lights (including the indictors) seem to be arranged like those of the 5 Series GT Concept. It is assumed the bonnet and grille feature a look similar to the GT as well.

The 5 Series is expected to enter the market in Europe in 2010 to be followed shortly by the Touring range. Petrol engines such as the 3.0-litre twin turbo and the 4.4-litre V8 twin turbo will be part of the lineup. Diesel motors like the 2.0-litre twin turbo diesel will also power the 5, while a new hybrid system to be used in the 7 Series has been hinted.

Hamann BMW 7 Series: First Images Released

Hamann announced that they now have a body kit to go with their tuning programme for the 2009 BMW 7 Series. Details are being kept under wraps for the moment except to say those tyres are running on 22-inch rims. Visually, components like a rear boot spoiler, a rear roof spoiler, four tailpipes and new side skirts can be spotted. The interior shows sporty pedals, and black leather seats and carpets stitched with the Hamann logo.

The previous-generation Hamann 7 (HM 7.1) was announced in 2005 and was based on the 760i/L. Hamman increased the factory V12 engine capacity from 6.0-litres to 7.1-litres and managed to release 510hp (375kW) and 728Nm of torque. The 0 - 100km/h time improved to 5 seconds while top speed went up to 312km/h (194mph).

Other models in the 7 Series range that were tuned are the 745i and the 745iL. These received a 5.2-litre V8 with increased power to 412hp (303kW).

Hamann is busy developing the next programme for the new 7 Series and we suspect the base car will be powered by the current 4.4-litre twin turbo V8 from the 750i/Li. After the release of the new 760i/Li we should see Hamann stepping up to it as well.

Orange Lumma BMW M5 found through Google Street View

Google Street View: Yup, no more privacy in this world and we’re here to confirm it again. The unique but weird looking Orange Lumma BMW M5 has been spotted again through the wonderful eye of Google Street View.

Courtesy of the folks at BushAutoblog, the Orange BMW M5, or by its real name CLR 500 RS, was found on the map right across from the Sheraton Park Tower in Knightsbridge, UK. The BMW Lumma CLR 500 RS is powered by a V10 engine that delivers 560 HP and it tops out at 203 mph.

As a trademark, Lumma painted their M5 in this orange color, liked by some, but disliked by many others. As far as myself, I prefer the black matte finish we’ve seen before.As BushAutoblog points out as well, the car is registered in Dubai, which for some reason doesn’t surprise me.

Now let’s go back to that Google privacy thingy: what are the odds of seeing two orange M5s in a city? Slim to none…? So, if you own one, be careful where you’re going, so you escape from the Google’s eye, or even worse, your significant others.

The BMW Z Vision Concept or the Z2 as the production model will be named, is based on the next generation BMW 1 Series and uses a soft top, with the precise scope of reducing weight.

BMW Z2 is all about EfficientDynamics, so the car will be equipped adequately with some of the biggest fuel savings engines, without sacrificing performance. The high-end Z2 will be powered by the so-much-talked four cylinder twin-turbo engines ranging from 1.8 to 2.0 liter.

Considered a Compact Roadster that will fully utilize the EfficientDynamics technology, the Z2 will be the first BMW hybrid Roadster. Labeled under the eDrive bage, an all electric version will complete the Compact Roadster line-up.

It will maintain the traditional rear wheel drive and it will come in both manual and automatic.

According to one of our friends over at GCZ, the BMW Z2 will be using a new technology, BMW Active Aerodynamics, imported from the beautiful GINA Concept. More details to come on that, but all we learned for now, is that it will feature a movable front spoiler and opening and closing intakes.

To reduce weight, the rear boot-lid and front wings are made out of composite plastic. Other body parts are made out of aluminum.

The upside down front-grille seen in the other renderings is back again and once again, I need to reinforce the fact that we will be seeing these type of front desing in other future models as well, starting with the next generation 1 Series. Phantom like foglights are expected to be seen again in the next 1er.

As mentioned before, one of the main competitors are the Mazda MX5 and Lotus Elise. The BMW Z Vision Concept will be unveiled at the Frankfurt Show in September.

Edmunds Review: 2009 BMW Z4 - A Star Is Born, Again

Cute weekend cars with sporting intentions and overwrought designs. That's been the reputation of BMW's small, slightly pricey Z3 and Z4 roadsters until now.

Unless you were a subscriber to BMW for Life magazine, there was no compelling reason to choose the Z roadster over one of its equally competent competitors.

For 2009, the BMW Z4 finally becomes a serious roadster. More than just a face-lift, some new options and a little bump in power, this Z4 gets a whole new identity. And cute is no longer part of it.

Retro Futurist
Unveiled at this year's Detroit show, the 2009 BMW Z4 sDrive35i looks stunning "in the metal." Slightly longer (5.8 inches), wider (0.4 inch) and lower (0.3 inch), the Z4 now looks a class up from traditional playmates like the Audi TT, Mazda Miata andMercedes-Benz SLK.

It comes across as a more expensive car than it is. Think modern BMW 507 from the '50s, but add BMW's latest 3.0-liter sixes, an optional seven-speed double-clutch automated manual transmission and a healthy dose of up-to-the minute tech.

And don't forget the new, impossibly compact folding hardtop, an all-aluminum engineering masterpiece that allows this Z4 to take the place of the previous Z4 coupe and roadster.

When and How Much?
On sale May 8, there will be two versions available: A base Z4 sDrive30i ($46,575 including destination fee) effectively will take the place of the current lineup's top-shelf Z4 3.0si ($43,525). A second model, the sDrive35i ($52,475), is a new animal altogether that's more comparable to the outgoing Z4 M ($53,225) in terms of price, engine output and handling capability.

Both models will be offered with a standard six-speed manual transmission, but the sDrive30i gets a 3.0-liter 255-horsepower inline-6, while the sDrive35i, which we drove, is powered by the company's matchless twin-turbo 3.0-liter 300-hp inline-6.

Pricey Options
Our 2009 BMW Z4 test car also featured BMW's latest 80GB hard-drive navigation/audio system with the "new" iDrive first seen on the 2009 750i. We also enjoyed the comprehensive Sport package that goes beyond a mere tire upgrade with adjustable/adaptive suspension plus bespoke electronic throttle and steering maps.

The optional seven-speed automated manual M double-clutch transmission with Drivelogic borrowed (slightly modified) from the BMW M3 will be available only on the sDrive35i and was also on our test car along with 10-spoke 19-inch wheels and Ivory White leather. Option prices have yet to be announced, but we estimate our car's total price probably topped $60,000.

Is It Worth It?
While that amount of money would've seemed ridiculous for a 2008 Z4, it somehow seems less objectionable for this recently matriculated Z4 sDrive35i. The engine alone is worth the extra cash, as it grabs your attention the first time you probe its upper ranges. The exhaust note gets angrier and the 7,000-rpm redline arrives suddenly and almost effortlessly, at which point you discover how quickly and seamlessly the seven-speed automated manual shifts gears.

The double-clutcher is well tuned to behave in a variety of situations. There's enough parking-lot creep with the brakes regulating progress, enough gentle clutch engagement for part-throttle getaways, and flinch-quick shifts for hasty ones.

In fact, when you're really putting the spurs to it, there's an audible exhaust burp accompanying each constant-momentum upshift. Shifts can be automatic, or manually selected with the steering wheel paddles or shift lever.

With a similar wheelbase (0.1 inch longer) and nearly unchanged strut suspension setup compared to the previous model, the Z4's handling remains relatively neutral unless you give it big stabs of throttle.

The Other Important Numbers
With a 3,494-pound curb weight, it's no lightweight, but BMW claims the sDrive35i with the seven-speed auto-shifter will sprint from zero to 60 mph in 5 seconds flat (5.1 seconds with the manual transmission). We're confident those figures are a little conservative, but they still line up favorably (exactly, in fact) with the last Z4 M Roadster we tested as well as running just a tenth behind the V8-poweredMercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG.

More than just quick off the line, the 2009 BMW Z4 sDrive35i is sneaky fast, too. With 300 pound-feet of torque at a mere 1,400 rpm and 300 peak hp at 5,800 rpm, the transmission rips up and down the gears so fast that you quickly find yourself on the illegal side of the speedometer without exertion or notice.

Though we weren't able to drive one, the company says the sDrive30i will require between 5.6 and 6.0 seconds to reach 60 mph, depending on transmission choice.

A Quality Cabin
The interior is also a huge leap forward. As with the exterior, the soft and hard shapes and exquisite surfaces coalesce to provide a truly premium environment. Our Ivory White leather-equipped example with glossy black dash was a particularly dramatic combination.

There's also a new bulkhead pass-through available to allow two sets of skis to be carried with a driver and passenger. With the top up, there are 10.9 cubic feet (DIN) of cargo volume and 6.4 cubes when the top is lowered.

The addition of an electronic emergency brake freed up room in the cabin for a genuine armrest compartment and even a small parcel shelf behind the seats.

There are also a host of infotainment options and packages including a hard drive audio server/navigation system with flash-memory-stick input for both audio and route guidance. At your home computer, first plot your route with POIs, fuel stops, etc., save it to a memory stick and then transfer it to the car. Very cool.

Expectations
At this point, saying that we were pleasantly surprised by the all-new 2009 BMW Z4 sDrive35i during our drive on Spain's Costa Blanca would be like saying we were shocked our luggage got lost on the return trip through Madrid.

BMW never fails to raise its own self-set bar, and Iberia Air never fails to lower its. If we had to write a national motto for Spain, it would be, "España! It's our first day on the job, so give us a break." If we had to write one for the BMW Z4 sDrive35i, it would be, "Z4 sDrive35i! Never mind the alphabet soup and cute reputation. This roadster is for real."

Today, we have a new video with the 5 Series GT and even though the interviewee, Herr Hans-Jurgen Branz, Project Manager for the 5 Series GT, speaks in German, I think you will find the video quite interesting.

The 5er GT featured in this video is sporting a pretty cool silver color, far different and better than the Concept model displayed at Geneva Auto Show.

I won’t reiterate all over again the details of the BMW 5 Series GT, my recent review covers pretty much everything.

BMW wants higher F1 car weight

BMW-Sauber would like to see formula one's minimum car weight increased.

Despite the voluntary introduction of heavy KERS energy re-use systems this year, the FIA has left the existing minimum car weight of 605kg the same.

But because the figure includes the weight of the driver, the KERS factor has led to widespread weight loss this winter, with some commentators concerned that F1 is heading the route of ski-jumping.

"In order to prevent formula one from becoming a jockey's competition, we are pushing for an increase of the minimum weight in the future," team boss Mario Theissen revealed.

BMW's F1 team is an interesting example, with the very tall (and thin) Robert Kubica unhappy about his KERS disadvantage, and diminutive teammate Nick Heidfeld further strengthening his advantage by also losing weight this pre-season.

Theissen on Monday said the team's KERS system is ready to debut at Melbourne, but he clarified that the final call about the technology's deployment in 2009 will be made "on a driver-by-driver, circuit-by-circuit basis."

Exactly two months ago, BMW has unveiled one of their most controversial concepts in the last decade, the BMW 5 Series GT. With the launch of this new model that will be part of the upcoming 2010 5 Series family, BMW has created a new marketing name, Progressive ActivitySedan, following the same path as the unusual models released in the last few years: Sports Activity Vehicle or the Sports Activity Coupe.

I have to admit from the beginning that I was one of the people that opposed the design and direction BMW was heading towards and I said many times thatI didn’t see the purpose of this “Progressive Activity Sedan” gimmick. But since I have to keep a neutral stand, I decided to wait and see the actual model before I pass any judgment.

So, the official photos came and went and after everything cooled off, including my initial excitement, I decided to take a step back and analyze the 5er GT.

What demographic audience is BMW targeting?

Based on studies conducted by BMW, the results show that the 5 Series GT will be a vehicle appealing to those that are looking for luxury, space and performance, but are not willing to spend money on a full 7 Series nor like the SAV models. Adrian van Hooydonk confirmed that the study revealed an aging customer base who find the traditional seating position of the BMW 5-series Sedan too sporty, but at the same time consider the elevated seating in the X5 or X6 too high.

Before he left, former BMW Chief of Design, Chris Bangle, stated that “This is the most customer-centered car we’ve ever done. We discovered a group of BMW buyers we were failing to reach out to at a sales level. We wanted to build a car to suit their everyday needs. There were no preconceived ideas. Everything you see is customer driven.”

In the end, BMW 5 Series GT has the same leg room and rear space as the new2009 BMW 7 Series, combined with a higher seating position. Place the 5er GT against the X6 and you will notice a far more improved headroom.

Exterior Design

The exterior was created by the young designer Christopher Weil and it includes the body surfacing and design elements which will be seen in the next-generation 5 Series due out in 2010. Some minor design cues were imported from the CS Concept into the 5GT, as seen by the shape of the headlamps and the very aggressive front-end. The front-grill is smaller than the one found on the new 7, but far more sportier.

The hood with the two creases ending above the headlights and into the kidneys, remind us of the new Z4, and it clearly indicates a trend that we will see in other future models as well.

All four doors are frameless which in my opinion it gives the car a cleaner look and in the same time, it shaves some pounds of the overall weight.

At the rear, the styling appears to be similar to the X6, with a “coupeish” roofline, but quite significant higher which gives more headroom in back. The biggest exterior design innovation is the two-mode hatch opening mechanism. A regular mode where the entire rear trunk frame lifts up, allowing for more than needed cargo entry and a second mode, where only the hinged top part of the trunk is being lifted , allowing for quick access to the trunk.

The L-Shape taillights blend in with the semi-sporty rear and in my opinion, they’re just perfect for this design approach. Not surprising to see the square exhaust pipes, similar to the ones on the 7 Series.

Interior Design

This is the area that the BMW 5 Series GT shines. The 7 Series was the first vehicle launched by BMW in a while that brought back the interior design quality expected by its fans, followed shortly by the BMW Z4 and now, the 5er GT. It was designed by Oliver Heilner with luxury and comfort in mind. “We wanted a car you could enter without difficulty and feel comfortable in over long journeys.”

The concept is a four-seater, but the production model will have five, losing the center console in the rear. The displays and controls are grouped according to their functions. The instrument panel enhances the very good visibility provided by the high seating position. The colors and materials for the interior design give the impression of total luxury, spaciousness, in my opinion, a very elegant approach which sends the right message to its potential buyers.

The impression of luxury is further enhanced by the ceramic elements integrated within the solid wood trim.

Engines and technical details

The initial BMW 5 Series GT will be powered by six cylinder engines, the 272horsepower naturally aspirated motor or the 326 horsepower updated 3.0 liter twin-turbo engine from the 7 Series.

BMW plans to follow up with the impressive 407 horsepower 4.4 liter V8 and also two diesel choices: a turbocharged 232 horsepower engine and 282 horsepower 3.0 liter twin-turbo. Transmission will be available in both manual and the new ZF eight-speed automatic. The Active Damping control will be standard. We also expect the 7 Series’ four-steering wheel option sometimes in the near future.

Since BMW is all about EfficientDynamic these days, expect to see features like start/stop technology, KERS and BMW’s new thermal-electric generator technology.

In conclusion, BMW makes the right move by targeting a specific set of customers, as described above, and I believe the car will fit perfect and do well in its niche. As a young professional, I am more inclined to purchase a different BMW, most likely a far more sportier and “younger” car e.g 335i, M3, etc..

But as some of you might expect an overall rating, I will say that the BMW 5 Series GT turned out to be a better looking car that many expected and even though it was received with a fair amount of criticism, it will grow on people after things settle and everyone gets a chance to see it or drive it.

From a neutral point of view and leaving my personal preferences aside, I would say the 5er GT gets a 7 out of 10 from me.

BMW 3 Series Hybrid Touring with X1 Front End Spied in Norway

Soon there will be new speculation about these spy pictures which were taken in the cold northern Norwegian town of Bodoe. The only report we have is that the car is supposedly a "hybrid" of sorts that combines the rear look of the pre-facelift BMW 3 Series Touring with the front end of the upcoming X1compact SUV.

Why BMW is testing such a two-bodied vehicle is still a well covered-up mystery dressed in black and white camouflage. However three reasons can be speculated. One is that BMW is experimenting with an Audi A4 allroad rival which would have a raised suspension, as seen in the rear view photo, and run on the xDrive AWD system.

Another could be that they are testing a brand new engine. Two years ago BMW was spotted testing the new 4.4-litre twin turbo using a 5-Series body and speculation went ballistic that it was a new M5 engine, which of course it wasn't. So we know they have a history of just testing engines using old bodies, but that doesn't explain why they are using camouflage on the front end.

That leads us to the third reason. Notice how the X1 lookalike camouflage does not quite fit from the front fender. Its oversized dimensions extend not only to the sides but up top as well. This would suggest that BMW could be hiding the entire front end of a new model which is housing a new engine - possibly a turbo petrol or a hybrid engine. Given Bavaria's rumoured four-cylinder petrol turbo engine we are inclined to lean towards this type of powerplant rather than a hybrid. Besides, the hybrid powertrain has been tested plenty of times before including in the X6.

BMW 7-Series Designer Karim Habib Lured to Mercedes

The RTL II Grip magazine had an exclusive opportunity to interview the test drivers of the upcoming BMW X5 M and X6 M models. The prototype vehicles are undergoing winter testing in the beautiful Scandinavian Peninsula. Unfortunately, the video is in German and there is no translation, but I still believe you will enjoy the new footage.

The RTL folks talk about the BMW X5 M and X6 M as having over 550 horsepower, running from 0 to 60 mph in under 5 seconds and the base price to be set above the 100,000 euro mark.

With the official launch date set for April 4th, we will definitely receive more information in the next couple of weeks and most likely, the first official photos and information.

BMW Z10 ED Sketch Surfaces - R8 Fighter on the Horizon

BMW’s Z10 ED green supercar needs to deliver an "exciting dynamic experience" as well as showcasing environmentally friendly technology, says the firm’s design director.
The Z10 ED, revealed by Autocar in January, is being turned into an £80k Audi R8 rival, and insiders suggest that the front-engined, rear-drive machine could make production.
It features BMW’s Efficient Dynamics, including stop-start and active aerodynamics, and will eventually adopt systems such as a heat collector that turns waste energy in the exhaust gases into electricity.

However, BMW’s new group design director Adrian van Hooydonk told Autocar that the Z10 will need to deliver an engaging drive as well as low CO2 emissions. "It would be good for BMW and show what we are capable of," said van Hooydonk. "The Z10 is the answer to the very interesting question ‘what if we designed a car for the future?’ The key to the BMW brand is that we must deliver an exciting dynamic experience in the future. That is the cornerstone of BMW, definitely."

Van Hooydonk also warned that the current economic climate may make it more difficult to launch the ED with a supercar’s body styling. "I’m not sure it’s number one to carve out some
territory in the supercar market," he said.

The lightweight Z10 ED is being worked on at the Technik think-tank in Munich, the birthplace of many significant BMW concepts.

2009 Kelley Blue Book Awards: BMW Best Exterior Design Brand - Luxury

Despite the poor financial situation, designers leaving ship or new concepts being heavily criticized, BMW manages to snag three awards from the annual Kelley Blue Book Brand Image Awards.
"The 2009 Brand Image Awards, presented to the top brands in 10 categories, are based on consumer automotive perception data from Kelley Blue Book Market Research’s Brand Watch study. Brand Watch is an online brand perception tracking study tapping into 12,000+ in-market new-vehicle shoppers annually on Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com."

Chris Bangle Leaves BMW

Chris Bangle, one of the most controversial automobile designers in recent history, is leaving BMW and will be succeeded by his protégé Adrian van Hooydonk. As successful as he is contentious, Bangle was the first American to spearhead BMW’s design department since 1992.
Bangle is known for the ill-mannered nickname "Bangle Butt", a term that has become tantamount with the distinct rear ends of the BMW models designed and produced during Bangle’s reign. It was first seen on the 2002 7-series sedan and soon spread to its successors. Bangle defended his concept by stressing that this design is a step in modernizing a car company whose stance on sheet metal is very traditional. Just the same, BMW stood by Bangle’s side all throughout the criticisms and the Bangle’s mark appeared on almost every BMW model product ever since. Many of these models sold well in the market.

Aside from the 7-series, Bangle and his team were the working design force behind the current 3- and 5-series ranges, Z3, Z4, Z5, Z6 and other BMW models. He also worked on the Mini and Rolls-Royce designs. He also helped build BMW Designworks in the US and made it into a successful design and consulting force that is known around the world.
According to the press release from BMW, Bangle’s move is voluntary and that he is to chase after an interest outside of the automobile industry. However, Tom Plucinsky, spokesman for BMW cleared that he is not familiar with the no-compete clause that wouldn’t allow Bangle to work for another automobile company.

BMW's Next Generation EfficientDynamics Being Developed with NASA

Only outer space is the limit for BMW it seems. The Bavarian automaker has begun working with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on its next-generation EfficientDynamics fuel and eco-saving technologies.

Speaking to the UK's CAR Online magazine, head of development Klaus Draeger said the tie-up would result in a saving of up to 5% in economy which is a larger saving than current EfficientDynamics technologies combined. These currently include features like brake energy regeneration and stop-start. EfficientDynamics meets 2012 and 2015 EU regulations.

Basically how the NASA system works is that thermoelectric generators or TEGs similar in principle to those that power satellites convert heat differences between radioactive metals to generate electricity. BMW has fitted a TEG to a prototype's exhaust system to make about 200kW of power. What that means is that some of the heat which is generated by combustion is converted to electric energy. This energy is then fed into the car's power supply for systems like climate control which swallow up good heaps of power.

Prototype equipment is already being out to the test. Series production cars will have the necessary equipment fitted within the next five years. To make the systems work even better BMW is including a new 8-speed automatic gearbox to volume cars instead of the new 7-speed double-clutch gearbox.

Rendered Speculation: 2011 BMW 5-Series

BMW had the European launch of the current 5 Series (E60) in 2003. The car underwent a facelift in 2007 and spy pictures depicting it while in testing have been shot. Now it is time to look forward to the next generation Fiver's outer skin. Because of how automakers work with regard to scheduling their cars, the 5 Series' final design has probably been approved already. And yes, it is a Chris Bangle-approved design. This is when artists start speculating on what it might look like in the metal when it is launched in 2011.

We have this interpretation of the 5 Series by Jonsibal. A recently leaked image of thefront bumper and a leaked scan of the brochure were used to create this rendering. The new design draws its inspiration from the facelifted 3 Series on the bonnet, the 2010 7 Series on the front grille and bits from the CS Concept and the recently unveiled 5 Series GT Concept.

Under the bonnet the 2011 5 Series will debut new engines which work with BMW's next-generation EfficientDynamics. Petrol and diesel options are a given, while a hybrid may also make the lineup in order take on cars like the Lexus GS450H. The 535i will use the 3.0-litre twin turbo petrol to the effect of about 240kW (326hp) while a 550i will take the 300kW (408hp) 4.4-litre twin turbo V8.

BMW is scheduled to introduce a new compact 4-cylinder petrol turbo engine to complement its existing 4-pot twin turbo diesel and the 5 will surely benefit from it. For the first time we are also probably going to see an M5 with a smaller turbocharged engine leaping well over 400kW (544hp).

Some new technologies like the redesigned iDrive with 3D satellite mapping, LED front and rear lights as well as an 8-speed automatic gearbox will filter down to the 5 Series

BMW Developing 6-Series GT, Z2, 3 Series Supersports & New Mini Variant?

We've got some exciting news on the BMW front. Sources over at Germancarzone, say BMW is planning a GT version of the next-gen BMW 6 Series. They also claim BMW is working on a Z2, to be introduced later this year, a 3 Series Supersports, and a new MINI model.

Just a short while after the introduction of the BMW 5 Series GT, the German automaker looks to be in the concept development stage of a BMW GT 6. This concept would be based on the platform for the new 6 Series, expected to hit the market at the end of 2010. Look for it to have some design cues similar to the on-again-off-again BMW CS Concept, with suicide doors in back. The rear-hinged doors should make entering and exiting the car very easy for backseat passengers, while maintaining a flowing look thanks to the elimination of the B-pillar. If it goes to dealerships, a 6 Series GT would be a natural competitor to the Audi A7 Sportback, the Mercedes-Benz CLS, and the forthcoming Porsche Panamera.

Also interesting is the talk of a BMW Z2. Alleged to be near completion, the car could see the light of day at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September. If the Z2 goes into production soon, it would be the first time BMW has assembled two different Z Series roadsters concurrently.

Rumor also has it that BMW is putting together the BMW 335i Supersports. The SS level would bring the car almost to the level of the M3, with various performance upgrades. Some of these could include use of more lightweight materials, better suspension, bigger brakes, and possibly an additional engine choice.

Lastly, BMW may be looking to continue the expansion of their British brand MINI, with the development of the MINI SpaceBox. We are not sure what this could be. After all, the upcoming MINI Crossover is expected to be about four meters long, only five centimeters longer than the Clubman. Perhaps the SpaceBox is something akin to the Volkswagen Bus. A true "MINIvan," if you will.
