Crosspoint, Inc., in partnership with Alpha Home and Bexar County Detention Ministries, presents its 4th Annual Community Resource Fair this Saturday, September 11th from 9 am. to 12:00 p.m.

The resource fair presents our organizations’ clients and their families an opportunity to meet in person with representatives from various community organizations that provide resources and supportive services important to men and women working on recovery from addiction or returning to the community from incarceration.

We expect over 150 of our clients and their families to visit the fair as they learn about accessing services that will help restore them as productive citizens of the community

Women's International History Month

On March 24, Crosspoint celebrated Women's International History Month by hosting a panel discussion on Women's Issues. The panel was facilitated by Pryor House FD Shaamid Gaitan. Issues and Panelists included:

Women Offenders and their Children - Lisa Neale and Corrina Laureles (US Probation Office)
Helping Women Develop a Positive Self Image/Esteem - Irene Hall (Dress for Success San Antonio)
Women and Trauma/Domestic Violence - Patricia Castillo (P.E.A.C.E. Initiatives)

The panel was well attended and the panelists provided great insight to those who work closely with women in need.

Electronic Accountability at Crosspoint

In April, Crosspoint will be transitioning to a paperless electronic accountability system for monitoring resident movement and clinical casework. Crosspoint will be the 1st Federal RRC (Residential Reentry Center) in the State of Texas to install this system.

Defibrillators installed at Crosspoint Residential Facilities

In March 2009, Crosspoint installed AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) in each of their residential facilities. This state of the art technology will provide Crosspoint staff with the resources to ensure the safety and well being of its residents at all times.

Mark your calendars for this year's Community Resource Fair scheduled for May 2, 2009 at the Ruble Community Center, 419 E. Magnolia, San Antonio, Texas 78212.

The fair will provide residents, clients and their families with information and resources to support them in the processes of reunification, transition into the community and building upward.

This year, in the spirit of collaboration, the Community Resource Fair has been expended to include residents/clients and families of three agencies - Crosspoint, Inc., Alpha Home and Bexar County Detention Ministries.

I wanted to provide each of you with a brief overview of Crosspoint's Inaugural Community Resource Fair that was held on April 21, 2007.

Fifteen community service providers sent representatives to meet with Crosspoint clients and family members to assist them in their transition to independent living from our residential programs. Approximately 100 clients and family members took advantage of the opportunity to meet with and receive information from the community agencies that sent volunteer representatives to this five-hour event.

The Second Chance Act of 2007

Our United States could benefit from the passage of the Second Chance Act. This legislation is a modest, commonsense response to the increasing number of people who are released from prison and jail and returning to communities.

There are currently 1.7 million people serving time in our federal and state prisons, and millions of people are cycling through local jails every year. Ninety-five percent of all prisoners incarcerated today will eventually be released and will return to our communities. The Second Chance Act will help ensure that the transition from prison or jail to the community is safe and successful.

Demonstration Grants. Provides grants to states and local governments that may be used to promote the safe and successful re-integration into the community of individuals who have been incarcerated. Allowable uses of funds include employment services, substance abuse treatment, housing, family programming, mentoring, victims services, and methods to improve release and revocation decisions using risk assessment tools.
Mentoring Grants. Provides grants to nonprofit organizations that may be used for mentoring adult offenders or transitional services for re-integration into the community.
Offender Reentry Substance Abuse Treatment. Creates grants to improve the availability of drug treatment to offenders in prisons, jails, and juvenile facilities.
Family drug treatment programs. Authorizes grants to States, local governments, and Indian tribes to develop and implement family-based treatment programs for incarcerated parents who have minor children.
Federal Reentry Initiative. Provides guidance to the BOP for enhanced reentry planning procedures. Specific information on health, employment, personal finance, release requirements, and community resources shall be provided to each inmate released.
Reentry Research. Authorizes the National Institute of Justice and the Bureau of Justice Statistics to conduct research around re-entry.
National Adult and Juvenile Offender Reentry Resource Center. Establishes a national resource center to collect and disseminate best practices and provide training and support around re-entry.

Total Annual Authorization: $165 Million
