Yesterday Forum Nokia released it’s roadmap document on its prospective work in 2010. This document is important to all developers who are aiming to make impression in the Nokia landscape of mobile devices. Insights in the document include -

1. The different Nokia platforms today - S60, Series 40 and the Maemo ( moving to Meego ).

2. Market share of different OS in mobile phones today ; Symbian continues to hold nearly 45% of the space.

3. Introduction to the Meego platform. And many more..

Quoted from the document - “ Series 40 supports Adobe Flash Lite 3.1;Symbian also offers Java ME, Flash Lite 3.1 and Microsoft Silverlight; Maemo offers support for Adobe Flash 9.4. We also expect to move to full Adobe Flash support on Symbian. Series 40 supports Adobe Flash Lite 3.1;Symbian also offers Java ME, Flash Lite 3.1 and Microsoft Silverlight; Maemo offers support for Adobe Flash9.4. We also expect to move to full Adobe Flash supporton Symbian. ”

It is really nice to note that Nokia is considering Flash to be an uncompromisable platform in its future for delivering rich content to its users; despite huge speculation about HTML5’s entry and how it can affect Flash’s market share.

The much awaited PyS60 2.0.0 development kit was released today. Since less than a month ago, PyS60 runtime started appearing in Software updates on S60 3rd edition FP2 devices onwards. This release is considered to be a stable release and has evolved since a year from the 1.9.x dot releases.

The development kit includes the following and is available at the maemo garage,

Installer for Windows platform that includes
- Getting started guide
- Nokia signed PyS60 runtime sis which will work on S60 3rdEd, 3rdEdFP1, 3rdEdFP2 and 5thEd devices.
- Two Nokia signed default capability set PythonScriptShell sis files.
- Nokia signed high capas PythonScriptShell sis. This sis file comes with higher capabilities than self signed (SwEvent, WriteDeviceData, ReadDeviceData)
- Unsigned developer certificate PythonScriptShell sis. This sis file can be used for Symbian Open signing.
- Application packaging tool with GUI and README

Archive for Linux/Mac platform which includes the same contents as included in Windows installer

Separate SDK zips for 3rdEdFP1 and 3rdEdFP2. SDK zip contains both gcce and armv5 link libraries. Python 3rdEdFP2 SDK zip will work fine on S60 3rdEd and 5thEd

Python source code

OpenSSL source code. This source code is released just to be in complaint with the terms of LGPL licensed software. This source code is nothing to do with PyS60 software.

Python for S60 pdf documentation

Change log since PyS60 1.9.7

Repeat support in 4-way directional pad

Lot of memory leaks in the interpreter code is fixed.

appuifw.app.track_allocations can be set if the interpreter should track all memory allocations and then free the memory which was not explicitly released before application exit. To debug memory leaks in 3rd party extension modules set the value to false.

All the Pyds that have zero UID will be assigned with the applications UID at the time of packaging.

As a result, Python applications can now be symbian signed. This opens the door for submitting Python applications to OVI Store.

Pdf documentation is available in the installer/archive.

API cleanup in the SensorFW module.

On the below mentioned devices Python runtime and its dependencies will be installed automagically when the Python applications is started.

Very long time with hectic schedule I have written a word puzzle based game for S60 devices - Py-Hangman. It is based on very popular game Hangman.

One player can play at a time. The word to guess is represented by a row of dashes on the screen. If the guessed letter is correct then correct positions of the word get filled. If the suggested letter is not in the word, then it goes in garbage bin and would not be used again.

In the last weeks I have been working on a new program called Milkshake. It is primarily a To Do list organizer but we want to promote Milkshake a little bit more. Milkshake has a plugin architecture and it is simple to create extensions for importing/exporting/sync the task lists. At this moment, Oliveira is working on a plugin for Remember The Milk that will allow real synchronism with external sites and I wrote some basic plugins for backup (import/export).

I would like to invite you to test Milkshake and, who knows, to write a new plugin. For instance, it is possible to write a plugin to sync with google agenda or with some bug tracking system. Just ideas, feel free to comment and share it.

The current recommend version is 0.1.0 (for Python 1.9.6), available at google code under branch 0.1. Plugins initial documentation is at this page and screenshots at this page.

Its been quite a long time I put my hands on any Flash Lite coding. I now present to you Bing Translation engine’s Flash Lite client. This application can translate between international languages using the Bing translation engine (version 2.2) provided by Microsoft.

Here are the keys steps -

1. Request a Bing API Key from Bing site. As any API key it is used to track the request for service or in simple terms, it is an identifier of the requesting party to Microsoft.

2. Understand the various types of communication method available to communicate with the server.

This can be found at the site http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd877872.aspx

They are of three major types -

JSON,

XML,

SOAP.

3. Process the result obtained.

I have already discussed how a JSON based client has to be implemented in Flash Lite in my google translator article. SOAP type of webservices are simple to implement with the webserviceconnector component.

In this article, we focus on how XML implementation is done. Before beginning to code the XML usage of the API, we need to understand the request is made as a query and the return is of XML type.

In order to request for data in the XML mode, you can use the loadvars() function in Flash

lv.load(”http://api.bing.net/xml.aspx?AppId=XXXXXX&Query=”+toTranslate+”&Sources=Translation&Version=2.2&Translation.SourceLanguage=”+src_lang+”&Translation.TargetLanguage=”+dest_lang);

Here, toTranslate is the sentence to be translated ( after escape() ), src_lang and dest_lang are source and target languages respectively.

In addition after some testing I found that some further processing of text was needed after unescape(). Quotation marks, apostraphe characters had some trouble in getting rendered. Hence I had to handle it myself as follows.

function process(ip:String):String {
while (ip.indexOf("'") != -1) {
var arr:Array = ip.split("'");
ip = arr.join("'");
}
while (ip.indexOf(""") != -1) {
var arr:Array = ip.split(""");
ip = arr.join("\"");
}
return ip;
}

In order to handle the receipt of data, you will need to write a onData function that processes the incoming XML data structure. Parsing an XML tree is again quite simple and to conclude creating a translation engine client is quite simple in Flash Lite.

Note: There is a need for specific fonts on the device for certain fonts to be rendered. For example for text in Chinese, Chinese font has to be supported on the target device. The screenshots shown are taken from Adobe Device Central CS3 on a Nokia 5800. The client is built for touch devices.

You can read more on the Forum Nokia Wiki page

And now, what in my opinion is the most important feature offered by the N900, the one most likely to have the power to lift the N900 above its competition in the long run is:Python! What in the world is Python, you ask? Well, my little non-geek reader, Python is a programming language. So, what makes Python special? Well, I don’t have the time to explain it and give it its fair due. If you are interested, a really good explanation was given by Eric Raymond in his “Why Python?” essay. Let me just list some of the reasons I think Python is the most important feature of the N900.

Python lowers the barrier of entry for N900 developers.
This is because Python is very easy to learn. My first programming language was Basic, followed by Visual Basic. I assure you, Python is easier to learn and makes a lot more sense. This is especially important when looking at code produced by somebody else.

Python makes hard problems easier to solve.
This allows developers to attempt to solve more complex problems than with other more complicated languages. This will likely result in richer programs available on the N900 than on other similar devices.

Python is great for application development on the go.
You can open up an editor, hack away at your code, and execute the code immediately, without having to wait for a compiler to churn through your code first.

The N900’s implementation of Python is not dumbed down.
I realize that there is an effort in Android to make Python and other scripting languages available to some degree, but from what I have seen they are relegated to macro like functionality. In other words, you wont be able to create full blown stand alone Python applications in Android. The N900, on the other hand, will allow this. Even the GUI side of the applications can be created with well known Python toolkits like PyGTK and PyQt. This is very important because there are tons of developers that already know how to write N900 applications, even if they don’t realize it yet.
