Liverpool striker Fernando Torres wants to replace Cristiano Ronaldo as the Premier League's top player.

The Spain forward, who has scored 50 goals in 84 games for the Reds since signing from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2007, is confident he can help end the Merseysiders' 20-year wait for a league title and put the achievements of the Portuguese in the shade.

Torres said: "Of course, my ambition is to be seen in that same way as Cristiano Ronaldo was seen at Manchester United.

"First we have to win trophies. I know only then will people be able to speak the same way about Liverpool and me as they have done (about) Ronaldo and United.

"We're excited because we think this can be the year for Liverpool. But we know how difficult it's going to be."

Ronaldo's goals and all-round play was instrumental in United winning three league titles in a row but he has now joined Real Madrid in a world record £80million deal.

Rio Ferdinand has admitted he respects former team mate Cristiano Ronaldo's decision to join his boyhood heroes, Real Madrid.

The England defender said it may be difficult for some to understand why anyone would want to leave United, but for Ronaldo it was something he dreamed about as a boy.

The Red Devils will certainly miss his input on the pitch, but according to the England defender, none of the United players hold any grudges towards Ronaldo.

"I don't think any of the lads are bitter or should be bitter towards 'Ronnie'," Ferdinand told The Daily Mirror.

"You have to look at it this way - he came here as a young lad and gave six years of his career to this club.

"Bearing in mind careers average out between ten to 12 years, he's given half his career to United, and I think you have to respect that.

"You can't put a shadow over someone's dream. Since he was a kid he's wanted to play for Real Madrid.

"Playing for United is the holy grail for some people, and it's those people who probably don't understand why he wants to go somewhere else that - for him - equals that holy grail.

"He'll always have a great affinity with the players here and I'm sure in the long-term the fans will see he was a great servant to the club."

Sir Alex Ferguson claims departed hero Cristiano Ronaldo is "streets ahead" of Kaka and Lionel Messi as the best player in the world - but is confident teenage star Federico Macheda will eventually receive the same adulation.

Ferguson only agreed to Ronaldo's desire to leave Manchester United for Real Madrid when the Spanish giants offered to pay an up-front world record payment of £80million this summer.

Many United fans have already claimed they are happy to see the Portugal international go given his increasingly individual approach, particularly as it allows Wayne Rooney to resume the central attacking berth he craves.

However, Ferguson is not joining those now attempting to rewrite history.

Describing Ronaldo's exit as "a massive loss", the United manager paid a glowing tribute to the player he still regards as number one on the planet, even if the title that currently belongs to the former Red Devil is likely to be inherited by Messi this winter.

"Cristiano is a massive loss," Ferguson said.

"I have nothing but praise for the boy. He is easily the best player in the world.

"He is better than Kaka and better than Messi. He is streets ahead of them all.

"His contribution as a goal threat is unbelievable. His stats are incredible. Strikes at goal, attempts on goal, raids into the penalty box, headers. It is all there. Absolutely astounding."

Now all Ferguson can do is watch on as a player he brought to England from Sporting Lisbon as a raw 17-year-old exhibits in La Liga all the ability he nurtured at United's Carrington training ground.

"Three years ago I had a conversation with (then assistant) Carlos Queiroz," recalled Ferguson.

"We thought we would be doing well to keep him for another two, so overall, we have done well to keep him for six years.

"He is a great player. And if he gets the right training regime, as he had at United, he will develop and get even better."

Yet, as he hands over Ronaldo's number seven shirt to Michael Owen, Ferguson is already looking at his next star of the future.

No-one will forget the way Macheda burst onto the scene last spring when he followed up a sensational injury-time winner against Aston Villa by securing another victory against Sunderland a week later.

"Macheda is top drawer, a hero in the making, just as Cristiano was," said Ferguson.

"It is hard to believe he is just 17. We probably need to check his birth certificate because I reckon he is at least 28."

Macheda's public introduction to the United first team also included an FA Cup semi-final appearance against Everton.

Little wonder there has been no sense of awe from the Italian as he mingles with the senior stars on the Red Devils' current Far East tour, and no sign of inferiority either in training, where his eye for goal is even sharper than that of legendary predator Owen.

"Federico has plenty of confidence," admitted Ferguson.

"When he came on the other night he dropped into midfield and ran down their left-side.

"He is a player all right - and tough as old boots. He can look after himself.

"He does not have the lightning reactions of Ronaldo but he is quick around the box and he has an eye for goal.

"He was way in front of everyone with his finishing the other day - and I mean everyone. It was magnificent to see."

Cristiano Ronaldo played on Monday evening as a starter against Shamrock Rovers in what was his first ever match for Real Madrid.
The 2008 World Player of the Year performed more like a team player than an individual superstar.

Highlights of the game showed Ronaldo feeding Higuain with a low cross from inside the eighteen yards box but the Argentine striker could not manage to deny the goalkeeper.

Ronaldo, who was placed wide on the right wing – his preferred position – had a good chance to put Real Madrid in front from a long range free-kick. However, the ball flew just wide.
He took another free-kick which ended in disappointment as his strike hit the wall.

After 45 minutes, Cristiano Ronaldo was substituted and despite failing to score at the expectations of many, Real Madrid went on to win with debutant Karim Benzema stealing the spotlights.

Speaking to the media after the match, Ronaldo said:

“I’m a bit tired because we have been training hard three times a day,”

“During the game, I felt a little overloaded, but I’m sure that… soon my performance will be much better.”

“I am in a spectacular team,”

“We played the ball well but the most important thing of this first game is that we won.

“I’m very happy at Real Madrid. It doesn’t matter to me where I play because all the positions are the same. What I want is to integrate into the team as quickly as possible.

“I believe the team have done well, but now we need to find our rhythm.”

Manchester Uniteds’s former number 7 ace Cristiano Ronaldo has spoken words about a couple of things regarding football in Real Madrid.

Ronaldo’s statements, which appeared onReal Madrid’s official website, emphasized the need for the Spanish giants to be cautious despite the presence of many big stars.

Cristiano Ronaldo pointed out Real Madrid’s new coach Manuel Pellegrini as a man under much pressure. He said:

“It’s a hard job for the coach, but we all respect each other. Competition is good. I am proud and very happy for being part of this group of players,”

“We must think about winning it all; that’s what Real Madrid is used to. We have great players and a fantastic coach.

“We will win, but if we don’t the entire squad will be to blame. I won’t be just me. I think we shouldn’t get ahead of ourselves. We have a great team and we will fight to achieve great things.”

Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo has been enjoying training with the squad in Ireland.

“We are working together and getting to know each other. I will not reveal what our conversations were about, but they have been typical of those between a player and his coach. I hope to keep up the good relationship we have,”

In Real Madrid, things are not the same as in Manchester. Ronaldo told why:

“I had never trained three times in one day, but I think it’s a good thing because we do both physical and ball exercises. The difference really lies in the fact that these are different but equally good players.”

Many people now see Cristiano Ronaldo as a lad obliged to carry a big load on his shoulders and fire Real Madrid to success. But the 94 million euros signing thinks differently:

Portugal and Real Madrid defender Pepe believes that Cristiano Ronaldo can guide Los Blancos to success in this new era of Galacticos. However, Pepe also underlined the need for the whole team to get behind the € 94 million signing. Speaking to AS, thePortuguese international explained:

“He can bring many things to Madrid, certainly titles. But Cristiano can’t do it alone because he doesn’t play by himself and that is something everyone must realise,”

“He has the whole team behind him and he has to work hard, too. If we are consistent, Cristiano will be able to shine. With his quality, his class and his talent he will help us a lot in fighting for all the titles.”
