Dipo Ceremony, Krobo, Ghana

Italian photographer Anthony Pappone traveld to Krobo, Ghana to phograph the Dipo Ceremony.

“Africa many cultures celebrate the passage of a child towards adulthood. Among the hills Krobo of Ghana, young girls carry on an ancient tradition. Every year, girls undergo a transition to adulthood.

In the beginning of the Dipo each woman Enters a house where they shed Their clothing representative of Their childhood and put on a new, mature set of clothing by Their ritual mother. Then, they shave Their Heads and wash in the river Which is meant to cleanse the body and spirit in preparation for womanhood.

During this ceremony they dance to music to celebrate Their passage into wmoanhood, Represent and their Families by wearing handmade beads passed sown for generations, but most imnportantly to impress a suitor and the tribe’s chief With Their new found grace and beauty.”

Australian Indigenous Education Foundation commissioned The Host with creative partners The Glue Society to create the foundations latest ad campaign. The new campaign features a very strong message, on one side there is an Indigenous PM with the message saying “This will never Happen”, on the other side it says “We say it can”.

“Newspoll data says that two thirds of Australians believe they’ll never see an Indigenous Prime Minister in their lifetime. AIEF believes that we can, and are invested in addressing the issue at its core by reducing Aboriginal secondary education inequality in Australia.”

Located within the Arctic Circle the islands are characterised by their stunning mountains that rise from the sea and the small fishing villages. Decorative Devanagari font

For me the Indian Devanagari script looks very decorative. But for Indian designer Sneha Patel it wasn’t, thus he created a Devanagari font infused with various elements inspired by Indian art and architecture.

“Art and architecture have always flourished in India. This has been proved time and again by the breathtaking craftsmanship skills showcased in the ethereal beauty of sculptures that have unmistakably defined the various monuments and temples of the country. While the native Indian sculptures that have immortalized much of the country’s rich history in the temples and ancient cities, a constant influence of foreign art and culture has also enriched Indian sculpture and architecture.

Thus, Devanagari Monogram is an attempt to infuse old architectural and cultural styles prevalent in Indian history with regular Devanagari font. Till date no attempt has been made to stylize the Devanagari font. Hence, the result is a traditional Indian font in a refreshing way.”

24 hours in Buenos Aires

If you had 24 hours in Buenos Aires, Argentina would you know what to do? With 48 barrios, or neighbourhoods, each featuring a different personality it could become tough to choose which area to visit. Luckily Qatar Airways’s inflight magazine Oryx checked them out and jotted down the places to visit. Patrick Hruby created a lovely illustration of some of the unique places in the capital that accompanies the article. Patrick included the colourful neighbourhood La Boca, the Argentinean Fileteado art, the Palacio Barolo landmark building and lots more into his illustration.

Graphic Design student Brittany Albertson created a fictional South African wine packaging label called Wyn, meaning wine in Afrikaans.

“I was inspired by the bold and striking colours that are used throughout South African art and architecture. I was also influenced by the amazing use of pattern in South African culture and the intricacy of those patterns.”

Burlesque has introduced three new mini-prints called Itadakimasu いただきます featuring Asian food illustrations. The all-you-can-eat buffet illustrations were created by Mike Davis and include Vietnam‘s banh mi to Japan‘s takoyaki to Laos‘ khao nieow to China‘s siu mai. Each print is 6 x 8″, scrreenprinted by Sarah Schatz in five colors on French Pop-Tone Spearmint and Sour Apple paper.

The Khmer Empire was perhaps the most powerful empire in Southeast Asia, covering Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Southern Vietnam and parts of Burma. Nowadays people associate Khmer mainly with Cambodia. Vietnamese designer Nguyen Thanh Nhan recently completed a Khmer graphics project for Applied Art. The illustrations are influenced by ancient motifs of gods and mythical creatures.

South African colours

This is quite an interesting project by Alejandro Ribadeneira who explores the South African colours. Sometimes all you need are recognisable colours such as the ones from South Africa. One can apply them onto almost anything and still get an association of South Africa. Countries such as England, the USA and Norway, who share the same colours aren’t as lucky/unique. Alejandro took the colours which are represented on the South African flag and included them on different geometric shapes and African animals. It would be interesting to see other country colours applied onto stuff, to see if one still can link it back to the country.

Hong Kong – Wan Chai Wayfinding system

Hong Kong is a densely populated area with a 1001 things to do and see. Finding some of these sights or simply getting around can be a challenge. Especially if one is lost in an area that consists of a lot of visual noise. Jason Kwan collaborated with nine other creatives and designers to design a wayfinding system for the Wan Chai district on the northern shore of Hong Kong island.

”Tastewalk is a personalized wayfinding system for Wanchai. The unique project emphasizes ease of orientation and concise designation without compromising aesthetics.

Working in a group of nine, we aimed to raise users’ cultural awareness of the dynamic district with heritage so rich. The principle map comprises a concise outline of the district, peppered with exquisite and custom-made map icons to highlight popular landmarks and time-honored attractions, such as Lun Mun Restaurant, Hung Shing Temple and “Ding Ding” Hong Kong Tram.

To show the best of a city within pages is no easy work. We started with thorough and comprehensive research on Wanchai’s history, demography and culture for inspiration. The process was of immense help as we were coming up with the final design approach: one that promotes and preserves cultural heritage.”
