So read the below list of 10 random words through a few times, until a story around the words begins to unravel. And then start writing. Don’t stop writing for at least 30 minutes, and try to get the entire first draft done in one sitting. Then revise. So here are the words:

I have great plans to revise and expand this site with more creative writing ideas, making it more than just a creative writing prompts blog. However, since I strongly believe that doing writing exercises are the key to becoming a better writer I will still feature at least one such exercise a week. And today we have a picture writing prompt.

So take some time to study the image. Allow the picture to tell you a story, and once you feel that you have a firm grasp on at least the beginning of this story, start writing and do not stop until the first draft is on the page. Write for at least 30 minutes, if you can, and try to not let yourself be disturbed during this time. Then go back and revise what you have written until you are satisfied that your story, poem, or flash is exactly what you want it to be.

All writers have a need to write, but it is not so easy to translate this need into actual stories, poems or novels. Part of the reason why this is so, is because it is all too often thought that to write (or to write well) one needs to wait to be inspired to do so. But if you do that, as you’re most likely aware by now, you will not get much writing done. In other words, you must write even when you are not inspired to do so! That’s all there is to it and below is a simple, barebones list of 10 steps to take to get writing.

So think of these as writing commandments and just do it:

1. Make a decision to write everyday and stick to it.
2. Set aside at least 15 minutes of pure writing time everyday.
3. When you are not inspired, make use of writing exercises and prompts to get the writing done.
4. Set writing goals for yourself, like, for example, writing one story a month.
5. Finish all first drafts.

See, nothing hard, but if you stick to these five rules your writing will get better and you will find it easier to get even more writing done.

Here is another great picture writing prompt for you to hone your writing skills on, get inspired and above all, just write! As always, first look at the picture, then try to imagine the story behind it and then start writing. Try to write for at least 30 minutes, or longer, and start editing only once you have completed the first draft in its entirety.

I really think that these offer the most creative leeway, as far as writing prompts and exercises go, and therefore make for the best creative writing prompts. So you know how it goes: First look at the picture, try to see a story behind it and then, once you have it, start writing. Write for at least 30 minutes, and then set what you have written aside for a few days, before returning to it and editing it.

Doing these types of creative writing exercises is especially great for getting over that pesky writer’s block, but also to get some writing practice in. Try to write for at least 30 minutes when you do this exercise, and then edit what you have written only after a few days have passed.
