Picture Writing Prompts: Napping

The Instructions:

Look at the image for a while and try to imagine the kind of story or scene it might belong in, which characters could inhabit it, and what could possibly happen here. Once you know, start writing and write for at least 30 minutes. Do not stop to edit while you are writing. Editing is for later!

Time for this week’s creative writing exercise! Today it is in the form of a story starter sentence and, despite appearances, this exercise is also very well suited to poets. All you must do is simply take the meaning of the sentence and apply it to your creation. And now for the sentence:

“Why can’t the mother exit?

The instructions:

Read the sentence a few times, and then start writing. All you need is an idea, a first inkling of a story. Write for at least 30 minutes, or longer if you have the time.

Today it’s time for the random words creative writing prompts. This exercise is really simple and really effective and lends itself equally well to all types of writers-from poets to fiction writers and everyone in between. All you have to do is let the words below inspire you to write. Random Words:

- Polished
- Apparatus
- Process
- Bicycle
- Suspicious
- Indicator
- Index
- Upsetting
- Snack
- Melinda

The instructions:

Read the above list a few times, until a storyline starts to connect the random words in your mind. Then start writing and do so for at least 30 minutes, or longer if you have the time. Once you are done, set the piece aside for a few days and let it “cool” before you begin to edit it.

Another week has gone by and it is time for a fresh creative writing prompt. Today it is time for the random phrases writing prompt. These are fun and slightly easier than the words prompts, in my opinion. They also lend themselves equally well to poets as well as writers. The random phrases:

- A plane agony
- The tourist sneaks
- Maintains the kitchen
- Can the candidate break
- A model cracks
- The banal lifestyle tolls
- The antique rainbow
- Translate a complex
- Before a rocket
- Outside the sequel

The instructions:

Go over the above list a few times with the desire to weave all the phrases into a single piece of fictional writing. Then, start writing and don’t stop for at least 30 minutes. Try to complete the entire first draft in this one sitting, so you have something to work on later.

Picture Writing Prompt: Mist

The Instructions:

Take a few minutes to look at the image. While you do this, try to imagine the story that this setting could be from. And if you write poetry, try to convey the emotion of the scene. Once you have it, start writing and write for at least 30 minutes. Do not stop to edit while you are writing, as editing is for later!

All right, here’s a new creative writing exercise for you to try your hand at. Today we have the story starter sentence creative writing prompt. Writers, you should use the sentence in your story somewhere, while poets can just take the meaning, the emotion or the feeling from it and work it into their poem. Before I give you the sentence, I would just like to remind you that you can now signup for my newsletter, which will contain just the right amount of creative writing prompts and other goodies. I’m just about ready to send out the first one. And now, the sentence:

“An adventurous captain storms across the forest.”

The instructions:

Read the sentence a few times, until it inspires you to write something. It needs to only be an idea, or a hint of an idea even, and no more. But once you have it start writing and don’t stop for at least 30 minutes, or longer if you have the time.

And remember, when doing this exercise, set aside a time and just write. Thirty minutes should be sufficient, but you might need more or less. Today I have the story starter sentence for you, which works equally well for poets as well as for writers of all kinds. I’m just about ready to send out the first one. And now to the sentence:

“The follower strays beside a picture.”

The instructions:

Read the sentence a few times, until it inspires a story in your mind. When that happens start writing and don’t stop for at least 30 minutes. And poets, just take the meaning of the sentence, or change the words so they fit.
