In this article, we are going to be discussing our Logo Design and Brand Conceptualization process for the It’s In Me project.

Background: It’s In Me is an on-going project that is built on the premise that individuals have the capacity to fulfill their long-term and short-term goals. Here is an excerpt directly from the client:

I call this place home for those who seek guidance, hope, and the belief in infinite possibilities. If anyone knows what it is like to struggle and face certain adversities I am sure that I can relate to some level. Of course, I believe that I am the eternal optimist too. This space will serve as a place of stories of people who have wavered through life’s most difficult journey’s…. Read More

When Creative Intellects, Inc., was first approached, we were asked to brand and develop a unique design strategy that would last the test of time. We were asked that the brand convey, ‘Freedom, Peace, Mentorship, Selfless, and Love’ to name a few.

The Process

Creative Intellects, Inc., initial approach was to create a strong conceptual definition – one visual symbol with multiple interpretations. During our process we excluded abstract symbols as it was necessary for the mark to convey a highly personal look. During this process we conceptualized many symbolic forms that would represent the clients objective outlined above.

Through this process, we utilized the butterfly as our primary focus as it encompassed the true nature of the clients mission. An effort to really brand It’s In Me as a independent source as well as presenting a more resilient image it coincided with the client’s objective.

The Solution

The addition of an organic butterfly helps conceptualize the overall mission. The perspective of the left wing is within the background – indicating the experiences that we have placed behind. The right wing much larger is placed in the foreground, indicating hopes, dreams, and aspirations. The wing also indicates life’s right hand person. With the color scheme of grey and pink, our color theory is positioned to bring a sense of calmness to the viewer.

The logo is a strong pragmatic solution that is not too abstract. It’s effective on any medium and can be enlarged on signage, and reads well in both large and small versions and meets full criteria for black and white facsimile transfer. We call this brand strategy a home run.

Elegance is not a crime, to say the least. Who would have ever thought that one of the greatest fighters of all time would also have a brilliant talent for words? I like to believe that all of us in the industry have ‘grace’ to provide services with a friendly smile. On the other hand, when it comes down to business deals and management you must sting like a bee if you want things done, in certain cases.

The one word that comes to mind is – diplomacy. If you practice this, then things really will turn out for the best. So before you decide to make a move, just remember, if you do it with diplomacy you will be as graceful as the butterfly, but not without the attitude of a ‘bee.’

Hatel Bhakta | Mood: Feeling like a butterfly

As you walk up to a mirror you start seeing a reflection. Another face stares back. It’s not the face that you are used to seeing. This one is different and rather gentle in physique. You continue to stare at the soft reflection of what appears to be of someone whom you can trust and value. There is a sense of stillness in this individual. You finally make the courage to question who it is you are seeing in your reflection, only to realize that it is you. Yes, this is how the world sees you. It isn’t in anyway the same way that you had envisioned yourself. Somehow you are more attractive than you first thought. You can see things you never saw within yourself, such as character, value, and a sense of self. You are everything you make yourself out to be.

You continue to stare at the reflection and take a few steps back. The reflection changes. You see a rather aggressive character with a lost smile. You start to consider the moments when you become more aggressive and realize that you too float like a butterfly, and sting like a bee. The only difference is, that you make it work for you.

The largest LA Mixer was last week and the Creative Intellects, Inc., team decided to storm the Shrine Auditorium and see what the latest and greatest that the City of Angels has to offer.

We were there before the big rush so we were able to check out the coolest booths and sample some amazing desserts. Seriously, if you did not attend it’s a bummer. We are glad that we did! After cruising around we found a few noteworthy spots that we believe really shine! These products/services are worth a double take.

Xtreme Desserts

We saw a long line of people waiting to sample the goodies, the most popular “Red Velvet Cookies” , which are truly nothing short of just amazing!! If you are a fan of red velvet cake, then this cookie is just the perfect treat for your special events. I know that they have different options, but who can resist red velvet cake? I was tempted to go back for another cookie, but I didn’t want to be greedy.

The bonus is that they have an online service for your convenience. We give this our two thumbs up!

LA Weekly

If you have seen LA Weekly Magazine before, you know it is jam packed with information on art, entertainment, and music. Here is something neat for our clients that are in fashion and entertainment. We met with one of the Senior Sales Executives for LA Weekly. She gave us a lot of information and we cannot wait to build our relationship with LA Weekly. By the way, our Creative Director loves their business card. It has ‘great use of scale and proportion combined with excellent typography.’ LA Weekly wins our vote on best marketing presentation!

LA Photo Party

Can we say it is probably the most exciting booth at the LA’s Largest Mixer! We were one of the first visitors to the booth and were greeted by the most energetic individuals you will ever meet. It was such a neat experience. You get all this fun gear that everyone sports and you walk into a white room. The 360 camera and mount took tons of great action pictures of us in action. Before you know it, you have a great panoramic shot of everyone as though they were standing right next to each other. In actuality, you were all in an enclosed circle. Who would have thought?!

This is so innovative yet great for companies who want to engage their employees in team-building activities. So the next time, you are going to host an event hire this company and you will totally get your monies worth!

If we were to just take the moment to stop and smell the roses life would be a little easier, don’t you think? I have always been fond of reading and dance. It does not require anything of you except that you give it your attention and that you also have fun while taking part in these activities.

If you think about it reading can keep your brain sharp and allow you to use your imagination. Dance is comparable to a exercise, which in turn can make you a healthier individual. I find that reading is a great way to relax as well as reflection. Dance is a great way to workout, you get to train your body for endurance and maintain balance.

So this week give reading or dance a chance and reap the benefits. I do and it feels great!

Today I am amused that my Oh-So-Talented ‘Partner In Crime’ choose this quote as it directly correlates with her personality.

I am amused that I own over 90 books in my library and I have only read 1 of them, but I subscribe to 273 blogs and read them religiously.

I am amused that last night I learned to salsa dance (the Mexicali way) and sang mariachi without knowing the words.

What are you amused by?

As with anything you may want in life you need to be committed. I say this loosely – because if you cannot accomplish what you set out to do for yourself then it is not worth doing it at all. I don’t mean that it strictly applies to your career. This applies to you in all aspects of your life.

When I decide I want to pursue a creative goal I make sure that I create an action plan and I find ways to ensure that I complete it. If you just put a little bit of motivation into your goals then you will reap the rewards. You will be one step closer to realizing your potential. This in turn will bring you closer to achieving your dreams.

Hatel Bhakta | Mood: Enlightened

I dare you to dispel every ounce of energy and achieve the impossible. Achieve greatness through the means of committing yourself to your actions.

Commit so deeply that you see nothing but results

Commit as if there is no other dream

Commit so that failure is not the end result

Commit knowing that you will achieve

Commit so that everyday is an opportunity to move closer to your dream

Commit so that you don’t feel the need to take a break

Commit to yourself

Give it all you’ve got – because you have one chance to achieve your dream. That chance stops when you give up.

Society has been consistent in dictating what success means for the masses. We are so ready to praise people for what is deemed as an accolade but not for the attributes of that person who achieved it. Einstein was quite the wise man – a man of value will go farther in life than a man who is just deemed as one of success!

I have always been fortunate to have been surrounded by people who led their lives with character and taught me that its essential to become a woman that is valued which, in turn breeds success. I can say that the people who I believe are of value and a success are individuals that have made a difference in this world. Let’s take for example, Mother Theresa, or even Albert Einstein himself. Both of these individuals were of ultimate value to the world. Are they a success story? Absolutely.

Success is measured by your values as well as what you can bring to this world. I believe that when you do good and share it with others this will make your mark in this world. It could be something small or breaking headlines.

Sometimes I think that we forget as humans what life is all about. In marketing, it is all about what value you can bring to the table. We call that talent. If you can use your talent towards a greater good we all benefit.

Think about it - food for thought.

Hatel Bhakta | Mood: Inspired

Is today going to be another day of routine and right answers?
Or
Would you rather today be one of novelty and nuances?

The truth is, no matter what is going on around you the choice is yours.
Success awaits those that choose to continuously embrace change. Success awaits those who are willing to work hard and I don’t just mean by working extraordinary hours. Truth is the number of hours you work is not really considered hard work. Hard work can only be measured by what has been accomplished. Hard work produces tangible ideas that are spawned through a concept.

So it is time to look at the world differently. Bring value by creating a success out of yourself first. Success is what you choose it to be. Big or small it is your choice to become successful. Value is what you give back with the success that comes with it.

Here is a quick overview of what has been covered in this series. Today’s post will conclude the design series.

Rhythm in Design (This Post)

Rhythm in design is best explained in one word – consistency. This is achieved by utilizing elements in a composition that are consistent, which creates a sense of rhythm that is understood by the viewer. Typically, rhythm is generally defined as a series of beats in music. Visually, rhythm is created through repetition, patterns, sequences, and textures.

Textures

Rhythm is created in this image by using texture. While the textures vary in size and shape it still identifies continuity as an example of visual rhythm. For example, the clouds are softly flowing in a horizontal form by contrasting value and color.

Shapes and Repetition

In this image, we can see that the shapes are repetitive which, create a juxtapose of repetition in colors and textures within the arrangement of its shapes. This rhythm is also known as Legato. Legato is defined as a connecting and slowing repetition through the use of shapes.

Patterns and Sequences

The repeating pattern of light columns against the darker negative spaces is clearly known as an alternating rhythm. Alternating rhythm is the use of consistent anticipated patterns. This expected quality of the pattern is not created on purpose, unless the repetition is fairly obvious. This aerial view of the city portrays a sequence of forms that not only, alternates in dark and light areas but also, regularly shifts back and forth as the figure and ground alternate for our attention.

There you have it - this concludes our series on ‘The Fundamentals of Design.’ We have covered everything from basic form and shape to techniques related to an emphasis in design. So take our series and show off your creative and intelligent solutions.

Rhythm in Design

Balance is a simple concept that we see abundantly. Simply stated, balance is the distribution of visual weight within a composition. When one views a pictorial, the center vertical axis is always assumed. At this point, the individual judges the visual weight distribution on either side of the composition. Let’s take a look at the quick example below.

The axis functions as a fulcrum on a scale or seesaw, and the two sides should achieve equilibrium. In the image on the left, we can see that equilibrium is achieved through the use of the palm tree. What makes this image balanced is the visual attention placed on the jet in the sky. The Palm tree with its diagonal sweep is subtly balanced by the radiation of its leaves.

Horizontal and Vertical Placement

Sometimes equal distribution of visual weight is a universal aim of composition. Artists consciously balance the vast majority of pictures we see. However, this does not mean there is no place in art for purposeful imbalance. An artist may choose to create imbalance because of a particular theme or topic, where the picture may raise uneasy, disquieting responses in the viewer.

The equal distribution of visual weight is the universal aim of composition. Artists consciously balance the vast majority of pictures we see in the market today. However, this does not mean that there is no room to place an art piece that purposely portrays an imbalance An artist may, due to a particular theme or topic, expressly desire that his/her piece raises an uneasy or disturbing response from its audience. At first glance this image seems rather balanced. The image does not relatively cause any discomfort or uneasiness to the viewer. However, if we examine this image further, we find there is a certain level of imbalance. The image is split into five sections within a grid. The sky, mountains, lake, trail, and shrubbery make up the five elements of the image. If we analyze it further, we find the image becomes heavier on the bottom and lighter on the top. Do you see the height of each proportion increase, as we look at it from top to bottom?

How can we forget Symmetry?

This is a concept that was ingrained into our minds since pre-school.

In the image above, balance is achieved utilizing similar elements of equal weight — symmetry. The fishing boat in the background, combined with the fence helps to illustrate the use of symmetry.

In the image above we see the use of asymmetry. Asymmetrical balance is achieved with dissimilar objects that have equal visual weight or equal eye attraction. The only reason this image is asymmetrical is because of the contrast between the white headlight trail on the left and the dark pavement on the right. Both the light trail and dark cement have visual appeal and are equal in weight – functioning as two separate elements.

There you have it, design through balance. Next week we will be covering Rhythm In Design, which will conclude our design series.

I would like to address the many comments that were raised on our previous post for ‘Emphasis & Focal Point in Design.’ Currently, there has been a lot of discussion amongst designers, photographers, and artists alike in regards to the ‘amateur boom.’ Today’s web technology combined with pre-fabricated plug-in driven software has turned our business into penny profits. Regardless of all this technology, I do believe as professionals we will always win this battle. While many prospects do not understand the importance of great design work – we as a company can only do so much to change the point of view.

However, large organizations and those with industry experience understand true creative work. Billboards, and TV ads surround us where the creative work is at its best. Organizations are pumping billions of dollars into our industry to make their brands stand out.

If you are outraged about this ‘amateur boom’ I say that you be thankful. It is yet another way for you to show off ‘your competitive advantage.’ But, before I end this post let me also say that I am in no way against new and emerging talent. Sometimes in order to get your feet wet you must start with simple software and work your way up. In fact, I believe that new talent is what creates new design trends. Everyone has the right to express their creativity, and many companies such as Adobe empower artists who are seasoned and novices. I find nothing wrong with that other then we have more people to find inspiration from. After all like many of you, I too was new and emerging talent at one point. ☺
