"I used to complain that taxes were too high and things cost too much. But I found out that wasn't my problem. My problem was I was not as valuable as I should have been." - - Jim Rohn

We all have problems of one sort or another. If it's not the economy, it's the boss, the job, the spouse, the kids, the government, and so forth. Here's a simple path to the solution of any problem like that in your life: Look in any good sized mirror! You will see
not only the real cause, but the solution for any of your problems looking back at you!

The trap is that as long as we blame anything outside of ourselves for our problems, we have given away our power and we are victims. We are powerless. That's not a good place to be.

"I believe each one of us is challenged to face our fears. If we don't, the issues will get bigger and bigger until we're forced to confront them." - - Dr Joe Vitale

We live in a friendly Universe, and that Universe supports us in our growth into our excellence. But we don't always want to cooperate, because growth is uncomfortable. Sometimes we have to be drop kicked into growth!

II was thinking about this as I was re-reading the interview with Joe Vitale in "Success: A Spiritual Matter." In it Joe reveals some candid details of his life that I don't remember him talking about anywhere else.

Don't Try To Change Your Behavior!

"Keep in mind that thought plus emotion creates conviction, and conviction creates reality." - - Dr Robert Anthony

Have you ever tried to change something reasonably important in your life? Behaviors like quitting junk food or smoking, spending more time on self improvement instead of TV, not procrastinating, having a regular exercise program, writing that book that's inside you? How successful were you?

If you're like most people, you may have been able to make short term changes, but long term success was elusive without some really powerful pressure on yourself. There's a reason for this difficulty - it's called your sub-conscious mind.

"You are never given a wish without also being given the power to make it come true. You may have to work for it however." - - Richard Bach

With the economic turmoil that we're experiencing has come a new wave of business opportunities for people displaced by the recession. Now, you know that I'm a fan of opportunities and I believe that everyone should take charge of their own life. But there's a trap waiting, and I don't want you to fall in it. The trap is a seductive one and comes in many forms but the common characteristic is that the sales pitch says, "It's easy!"

There's a lot of people who think that when we get this financial crisis straightened out, things will go back to the way they've always been. I hope you're not one of them! Because there are many parts of this crisis that are the result of major changes in our world and our work, and if you're not preparing yourself for the changes, you're likely to get left behind. . .

"Your life works to the degree that you keep your committments."- - Paul Larson

Why is it that we seem to forget all the things that go right, but we never forget the exceptions, the things that went wrong? A lot of guys think that it's a girl thing. "We've been married for 20 years and my wife never lets me forget the one year I forgot our anniversary!" It takes lots and lots of "atta-boys" to recover from one mistake.

But it's not just a girl thing. Dan Gilbert, in his amazing book "Stumbling On Happiness" points out that it's a basic design of our memory system to remember exceptions, and the exceptions seem to be more common than they really are as a result. This is VERY important to remember if you have a business! Every time something goes wrong with a customer, you're triggering this long term memory system. A customer never forgets, and they tell lots of their friends, too....

One of the major casualties of the economy seems to be major electronics retailer Circuit City. I beg to disagree. I think the economy is getting a bad rap in this case. In fact, I predicted about a year ago that they were a sinking ship, based on some particularly boneheaded actions that the company took. And there's a lesson here for all of us....

"We tend to minimize what we can accomplish and for some equally strange reason, we believe others can reach heights which we cannot! We tend to overlook the fact that there is enormous undeveloped potential within each of us, a great reserve of talent and ability which we habitually fail to use." - - Earl Nightingale.

What are you doing to assure that 2009 is not just a repeat of 2008? Do you realize that the only one that's holding you back is you? Yeah, already I can hear people saying, "Wes, if you knew what I have to deal with - the job, the kids, the bills, you wouldn't say that!" I rest my case. You're arguing against your own best interests just like Earl said in the quote above.

Let me give you an good example. A couple of years ago a housewife in the Phoenix area woke up from a vivid dream with a story line that captivated her. I guess all of us have done that once in a while. You think "Gee, I wonder how that turns out." Then we forget it.....

"Most people seriously overestimate what they can get done in a year, and seriously underestimate what they can get done in 5 years." - - Tony Robbins. Do you set goals and achieve them? Regularly? If you do you're in the minority. Most people don't even try and those that do often find the same big goals setting on their list for a long time without ever being accomplished. How is it that successful people seem to be able to set and achieve big goals routinely? What do they do differently? I think I've finally figured it out.

"Conformity is the enemy of prosperity." - - Matt Furey. The biggest mistake that most people make when they start their own business, or go into a new field, is that they look around to see what others are doing and do it, too. That's why so many people have to try to build their business on "low price." They have no way to differentiate themselves. They run the same kind of ads in the same publications, make the same offers and provide the same service. I hope I'm not describing you. You may think that

One is very much what I like and am good at, but it's straight commission pay. The other job is not quite as good a fit, but it's a salaried job and I feel it would be more responsible to take it. As I was coaching one of my clients the other day I was reminded that there's a part of the formula for success that no one likes to talk about. You might call it "the elephant in the living room" that everyone is ignoring. Even though "The Secret" actually had a scene with an elephant in the room, they ignored this point too! Let me explain. When I studied with Bob Proctor I learned Bob's little 3-step formula for success. He said there were only three things you needed to know:

Do you ever wonder why some people seem to find it easy to set big goals and achieve them? Do you ever wonder why others seem to sabotage themselves at every opportunity? "Habits are cobwebs at first; cables at last." - - Chinese proverb. One of the great lessons I learned from Bob Proctor was contained in a story that he heard from Dr Jay Dishman, the minister of the Unity Church in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr Dishman told of visiting the famous Alcatraz prison in the San Francisco Bay where the most hardened criminals were at one time incarcerated. Now a historical site, visitors are allowed to tour the buildings and cell blocks from which no one is known to have escaped alive.
