Pepi Bath – Fun, Personal Hygiene Learning for Young Kids!

Pepi Bath (by Pepi Play) is an iOS Universal, Education app geared toward very young children, those in the potty training years specifically. This interactive, iPhone and iPad app introduces children to personal hygiene routines, covering tasks like washing clothes, using the toilet, bathing, and grooming. The application itself is colorful and engaging, has cute graphics, contains lighthearted and carefree music, as well as the choice of either a boy or girl character to lead through the activities at hand. After selecting a gender, there are 4 large activity-themed icons to choose from: a washing machine, a cup with a toothbrush, a toilet paper roll on a holder, and a rubber ducky floating in a tub of water.

Once inside 1 of the 4 areas, the different objects can be tapped on to activate an expected grooming action and are reinforced with affirming responses from the little boy or girl. For instance, in the laundry room, your character appears anxious and continues to sigh until your child understands that he or she needs to free the character from the soiled clothing (one piece at a time), and place shoes into the waiting cubby (which opens and closes when the action is completed). Once your child grabs ahold of the washing powder, fills the tray, and presses the green button, the clothes will be clean in no time — but he or she isn’t done yet — the “boinging” clothesline alerts him or her that it’s now time to hang the clothes to dry. With a “That’s nice,” and a “Well done,” it’s time to move on to the next activity.

In the bathroom, there appears to be no specific routine order like in the previous laundry room activity. Kids will have fun blowing their little boy or girl’s drippy nose with the tissue provided. Other activities include: turning the hot and cold water handles on and off, soaping up dirty hands — which do take a few tries before completing. I noticed the characters apparently don’t like their faces washed (and they let you know), but when a specific grooming task is done properly each character cheerfully thanks you. The character gives a disapproving response when the scissors are touched (I cringe when I think back to the unfortunate “haircuts” my children gave themselves over the years). Kids will also relish brushing the nasty, yellow teeth until they are sparkling white.

The Potty training area is pretty straightforward and apparently works in more of a sequential order as your little boy or girl sits on the toilet (little foot wagging) just waiting for your child to tap the white dot on the tummy area to activate some rather suggestive facial expressions, gassy responses, a few plops, and a final streaming sound (3 to be exact) before the the little boy or girl points you to the next obvious step in the toilet-training process — you know the one that most kids don’t love to do themselves — wipe. We parents are always so proud and happy when our precious little ones relieve us of this dreaded task. The cute toilet paper roll initiates a response by giving several squares (one at a time) to get the job done. The app then prompts children to toss their “used” toilet paper into the lid-lifiting can instead of the toilet, which I thought was odd because nothing like that it goes into the garbage can at my house — hmmm. With a pull on the cord the toilet flushes, a quick spray of the air freshners, and all is good. Time to move on.

The bathtub section was my favorite because it had the most interesting and fun interactions. There are 2 bottles that allow the water color to be changed to either green or purple (when the liquid is poured into the tub), a noise-making/water-spurting rubber ducky, handles to turn on or off the hot/cold water — and funny responses when the water temperature isn’t quite right. Kid’s will love playing with the overhead shower sprayer and sudsing up hair to be washed, as well as popping bubbles.

The developers did a nice job of introducing young kids to personal hygiene in their app presentation overall, but I think to make it even better, I’d like to see the characters’ movements less controlled and a little more natural, but this limited movement could be to help focus young children in on the specific task at hand. And another thing, most kids hate to wash their faces, so we parents need all the help we can get to encourage our kids to do this — it is an important part of personal hygiene. Perhaps an initial resistance and then an agreeing response would be better. Other than these tiny points, it’s a easy-to-use, cute, fun, and helpful application to encourage the little ones — and all the parents out there. Check out all of our iPad app reviews. Crazy Mike

But, one thing that is missing is a help or tips feature — except for the very first time you log in. I would love to see the help/FAQ’s available on demand for those of us with a short memory span, especially since there are so many great features to remember. One big tip: if you’re not sure how to use this app you can’t go wrong by long holding on any status update, image, etc., because you’ll probably get a tool menu with more options. Couch Potato Beat is a hilarious Entertainment app that lets you quickly create up to 4 of your own groove tracks for each of the 14 funny and animated sound-themed scenarios. This is one of those apps that really deserves a 4.5 CrazyMikesapps Head Rating and the price of admission for the app is — $2.99. Why you ask? Because this app is very entertaining and gives a unique form of artistic expression with just the right mix of urban influence — in the form of a music drum loop app that lets you get into the creative process to come up with your own really funny animated drum sound loops, combined with cool black-and-white graphics for plenty of added personality.

Heck, if you’re a good enough DJ you can probably figure out how to use this app in your own sound creations. While this app is Universal and works on both the iPhone and iPad, we tested it on the iPad and I had a ball. I created groove tracks to the “Human Beat Box” animation scene that includes hand raising, body beating, and some well placed farts to make this animated drum loop track a blast. Each of the animated drum loop scenes has 4 separate, saveable tracks to customize with up to 4 sounds in a synthesizer-like board that you decide when and what sounds occur with the tap of a finger, causing a specific animations to respond above. Some of the other fun scenes I experimented with were 8 Bit Retro, Techno, Disco, and Club House (which is probably my favorite).

The developers at docab have done a great work in my opinion with this app and it appears they are working on more “beat packages” that will be FREE if you have this app. Features I would like to see to make this application even better are: 1) the option to share a :15 clip of an animation on Facebook or Twitter, 2) More beat packages, 3) a Country beat package, and 4) a Blues beat package. Sparky the Shark – A Frighteningly Funny Adventure Children’s Storybook Deluxe, is a fun and interactive iPad storybook featuring a friendly, but misunderstood shark who tries to change himself to fit in — but eventually discovers that’s not the problem. As far as sharks go, Sparky is one of the nicest sharks you’ll ever meet, but people are always scared of him. Actually, Sparky is a super nice shark who just wants to hang with people, but for obvious reasons people do not want to hang with him — do you think it could be his large imposing teeth? The story starts off when Sparky notices a sign on the beach that says “No Sharks Allowed.” Sparky tells his best pal Dax (a penguin) that he cannot go to the beach anymore, which really bothers him, and what about that Sand Sculpting Competition? The story continues on into an adventure as Sparky tries various silly ways to disguise his outer physical appearance so that he’ll fit in better, but it is not until a “Eureka” moment that the big dopey shark finally gets it.

Sparky The Shark is a well done kids’ iPad storybook with plenty of animations and interactions for kids to find, as well as kid-friendly navigation for getting around. There are 2 reading modes, one narrated and one without the narrator for children to read along at their own pace by themselves or with others. At the end of this book there is a Fun section that gives children (and adults) the opportunity to dress up Sparky with some goofy items that go along with the story, which can then be saved to the user’s camera roll. SPOILER ALERT:
This story is about self discovery and the desire for acceptance and understanding. Sparky and his friend Dax don’t understand why people are afraid of Sparky. Sparky desperately wants to go to the Sand Sculpture competition and not ruin it for everyone. So they embark on an adventure to change particular aspects of Sparky’s appearance. They visit 3 funny locations where Sparky tries changing his teeth, covering his fin and finally disguising himself by wearing a costume. But every time Sparky tries to change his appearance, it doesn’t work. Instead he looks hilarious or absurd and they end up laughing so hard, they fall to the floor. He asks his wise old Grandpa for advise. In the end, Sparky proves to himself and everyone else, that he is a good shark and he just had to be himself. Grandpa was right and Sparky is a hero.
