The quick review: I didn’t care for this version, “Old Sport”

I loved the book The Great Gatsby in high school, but it’s been a while so I had forgotten a lot. That said, I want to read the book again one day – this movie didn’t quite capture the heart of the book the way I remember.

If I have to hear “Old Sport” uttered by DiCaprio one more time I think I’m going to die. It gets so annoying that I thought about leaving the theater to escape the catch-phrase hell.

In the book I wanted Daisy to choose Gatsby, but in the film I wanted Daisy to just leave the screen completely or choose Tom already and move along. Tobey Macguire’s Nick Carraway is absolutely boring. I did feel bad that Nick was getting pulled into the whole mess, but at the end I wasn’t sure that he and Gatsby were friends at all – they still seemed distant. I wish Nick would have had more of a favorable reaction to Gatsby and showed a friendship so at least I could feel bad for Nick towards the end.

The random rap didn’t help matters, it was the 20′s not the 2000′s!! Come on!

I will say that the scenery was beautiful! If you ever wanted to attend a Roaring 20′s party then you can feel like you at least got to watch an authentic one. The scenery is the only redeeming quality about this film and that’s how it came to get my rating of a C-.

Without the beautiful scenes I’d have to give it a D+. I won’t say that I hated the film, but I won’t be recommending it to anyone.

Movie Review: The Great Gatsby

Hot guys and fast cars: YES PLEASE!!

If you love Vin Diesel – then you’ll want to know that he’s in it. Along with The Rock. And Paul Walker. And Ludacris. And Tyrese. And you know what – there’s cars and speeding and a storyline and hot guys. I hear it’s likely the 2nd best of the series, but I guess that’s up for debate. It was solid for what it is – you know it’s not winning any academy awards but if you like guys in fast cars – you’ll love it.

There were some really hard to believe stunts in the film (as you would expect) and I love that the whole theater would erupt in laughter when they would happen. I thought maybe I was going to be the odd man out on laughing that the runway ended at just the right time after a 10 minute plane/car chase and fight scene. When Dom (Diesel) caught someone mid-air and they walked away without broken legs and arms – well you do the math. What I love is that it doesn’t take itself too seriously and I think that helped me to just sit back and enjoy the eye candy, er I mean movie in front of me.

It’s rated PG-13 and I think it’s up to  you on this one. My 9 year old could watch it as he’s seen some PG 13 movies (Jurassic Park, The Avengers). There were a few bad words, and yet again I heard GD used once. I hate that more than any other bad word, so I cringe when I hear that. I think it was used once. I don’t recall anything too sexual or too many bad words (I’m sure there were a few more – like the s word, can’t remember if the f bomb was dropped). It wasn’t every other word or anything and the kids that were in the screening didn’t seem to be too bored because it’s almost nonstop action.

Fast & Furious 6 comes out May 24th, 2013.

**Anyone going to see this : stick around for a during the credits scene you won’t want to miss. Spoiler Alert – it involves Jason Statham. That’s all I’m going to say.

Movie Review: Fast & Furious 6

I was so looking forward to this movie and I was not disappointed!

If you like Wedding Crashers, Dodgeball, or any other movie like that then you will enjoy this one. It was cute and while it did follow the expected formula it was still good.

Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn are stil great together. The movie is solid for what it is, just a feel good comedy for the 30-40 year old crowd.

There were a few bad words though (I hate that they used GD at least twice). There is one scene where the group winds up in a dance club that’s kind of a strip club type place. While you don’t see any “parts” there are some implied sexual humor scenes that are certainly geared for those over 13.

“Two salesmen whose careers have been torpedoed by the digital age find their way into a coveted internship at Google, where they must compete with a group of young, tech-savvy geniuses for a shot at employment.”

The Internship comes out June 7th, 2013.

I give The Internship a solid B.
