WWA Gallery Presents "Subtleties of Character"

Opening Reception: Friday, December 10th, 2010 from 7-10pm
On View: December 10th, 2010 – January 15th, 2011

This December, experience a group exhibition of international scope organized solely through Facebook as WWA gallery presents Subtleties of Character. Curated by Dan Barry, Subtleties of Character showcases 27 artists and their personal vision while simultaneously exploring layers of connections that exist within the New Contemporary Art Movement.

Open to the public, the Subtleties of Character gallery reception is from 7 – 10pm on Friday, December 10th. Each artist will present a primary work in addition to 1-3 drawings to be shown in the project space. The exhibition will run until January 15th, 2011.

“Upon being asked to curate a show at WWA gallery,” Dan said of Subtleties of Character, “I immediately made a list of artists whose work contained unique personal visions that resonated for me. Often, the work is emotionally charged, soulful and ambiguous in narrative, but full of enough signifiers of meaning for me to derive my own meaning from the work.”

About Dan Barry:
Dan Barry is an artist, collector and curator. Having grown up on a farm in Wisconsin, he made objects and collected a variety of things as a child and began dealing in antiques at the early age of 15. Beyond being an avid art collector, Dan has shown his own work at WWA gallery, La Luz de Jesus, Copro Gallery, Distinction Gallery, and MondoPOP. He lives and works in Austin, Texas.

Distinction is pleased to announce our partnership with ArtHatch on our upcoming exhibition "Jest In Time: The Phylogenesis of Clowns" co-curated with Dio Sumagaysay that will run from from August 14 - September 4, 2010. The exhibition will feature 36 artists from around the world creating pieces centered around the theme and size 12 x 12 inches or smaller.

The exhibition will be silent auction style with all pieces starting at $100. Bidders will have the opportunity to take their chances and bid on the piece, for $100 or higher, or purchase the piece for the "buy it now" price stated by the artist.

The auction will begin with the preview (August 9) and go through the end of the exhibition, but the "buy it now" prices will end at 9:00pm during the reception on August 14th.

The reception with live music by Oregon based Calico Jack, a baton troupe, fire dancer, beer courtesy of Stone Brewery, wine courtesy of Wien’s Family Cellars, food courtesy of Jalepeno, and lots of art lovers will be held on August 14, from 6-11pm.

ArtHatch is a multifaceted organization founded on the principles of creativity as a way of life and dedicated to being a welcoming, non-traditional venue for young, established artists to gather. ArtHatch also provides young, aspiring artists a unique environment and experiential landscape from which they can grow, learn, and blossom. Through the nurturing and specialized experience of its founders, ArtHatch is uniquely positioned to deliver an artistic panorama of young artists' work to society, thus enriching this arts loving community with the gift of youthful creativity.

100% of Distinction's profits will be donated. A portion will go towards ArtHatch activities and a portion will go towards college art scholarships at Palomar College in loving memory of Charles 'Chuck' Leslie Walker.

Distinction is a 7000 square foot building which houses the front gallery: which changes monthly, "The Alley," featuring new and previous works from over 75 artists, 14 artist studios, ranging in size from 150 to 800 square feet, featuring the work of over 35 local artists, and "The Lounge", containing 8 walls featuring local artists. The front gallery features contemporary and cutting edge art work with a soft focus on Urban Surrealism. I've been crocheting a lot lately. I think it's in large part because I recently quit smoking - every time I get an urge, I grab my hook and a skein and start going to town.

This has led me to a whole new obsession - giant granny squares. In particular, I am taken with this Impossible Hexagon square. [pattern link] I've made four of them so far, all in blues, greens, and purples with a touch of yellow.

This is also the first time I've tried blocking. I am a self-taught crocheter from a young age and only recently began to read patterns and play with some different techniques. It's incredible the difference blocking makes with these squares - I should take some before & after photos on one of them!

So, here's my dilemma. I really want to make a full afghan with this square pattern. I'm figuring on 35 squares, which will make a blanket large enough for a queen size bed. I want to try to make some afghans to sell at craft shows. What I'm wondering is, is there a market for handmade afghans, and are people willing to pay a good price for them?

My mom has a quilt collection, so I know from experience that there are a large number of people out there who have no problem paying hundreds or even thousands of dollars for a quality, handmade quilt. But what about afghans? If I figure about $10 per square (which is still probably a little low based on the amount of time a square takes to make), the blanket in my head would carry a price tag of $350.

Is it worth my time to make the afghan? Will it sell at that price? What do you think?

I'm getting married in September!

As such, I've been elbow-deep in wedding crafts. Among those projects are my bridal bouquets and other wedding flowers, which I am making out of duct tape. Everyone looks at me like I'm crazy when I say it, but they look really nice!

It took me a while to get them right. The first tutorial I tried using was not very clear on some of the steps, so it took several frustrating tries to get it right. I decided to write my own tutorial for the flowers as well as assembling them into a bouquet, in case anyone else out there is strange enough to want duct tape wedding flowers as well! :)

Adam and I took a long walk in the woods yesterday, and I was inspired by the new spring leaves. We took another walk today, and as we were wandering I was all the while stitching in my head, trying to figure out how to replicate all of the shapes I saw. When we got home I knew I had to create something! I whipped out my crochet hook and a couple skeins of green yarn, and after my first terribly failed attempt (oh, the horror!), I came up with this lovely little oak leaf pattern.

And I have to say - I am VERY proud of this one!! :)
