My sister bought this for me probably five or six years ago. For my birthday. Or was it Christmas? I can't remember anymore. For one reason or another (laziness), I never got around to uploading the tracker number in a timely manner, but I carefully stashed it away in a shoe box with some other odds and ends. I was cleaning recently and found it, which brings us here. My cracker finally has a place in the world! Much to the jealousy of the wooden frog statuette that normally sits next to it at my computer desk. Thanks, Sis!

Peepon meets Keepon

Marek Michalowski stopped by the BotCave on Thursday to pick up his Thing-O-Matic. He brought a Keepon with him. I've thought this robot was amazing online, but just like the movie star that he is, he's more amazing in person -- the Keepon, that is. Marek is a pretty down-to-Earth guy. He was here to show the Keepon at the New York Toy Fair. We had a lot of fun with both of them.

I went to the Staten Island land fill, you know, the largest dump on earth. For 50ish years we New Yorkers sent all our refuse there. Some of mine is there too. They're in the process of reclaiming it at $1 million per acre! They've renamed it Freshkills Park. All the garbage is still degassing. They're able to sell the gas-off as energy to ConEd -- but certainly not enough to pay for all the acreage development. The irony is that one day people will be picnicing mere feet from strata made of black and white TVs, bed frames, and filing cabinets.

When you threw something away this is where away was. Now our junk is put onto a train and sent to South Carolina. The little yellow front end loader is for scale. These cyan hoes are giants!

What's not to love about the Fab Four rocking out with a cracker? This collector from St. Louis knows that Sir Paul is not only listed in Guinness World Records as the "most successful musician and composer in popular music history", but he is obviously a HUGE cracker fan. Was the song originally going to be "Lucy in the Sky with Crackers"? Don't know, but we do know that the "The Beatlecracker Suite" must have been an ode to crackers à la Tchaikovsky (you might notice that Tchaikovsky was cute and had pretty long hair - making him a very early Beatle).

Eye catching graphic in the neighborhood that used humor to remind the workers why they need their hard hat. Hopefully, there isn't that much debris raining down. The graphic for head-runs-into-object would have been harder to illustrate, but is equally as common as object-falls-on-head (i.e. user error).

On the front stoop of Louis Armstrong's house is this pooch, forever guarding the hundreds of recordings he made while in his jammies. He filled about 650 reel to reel tapes, half of which are just everyday conversations around the house. He had microphones and speakers everywhere. Sometimes he'd be singing without any background (maybe he had headphones on) and sometimes he played his trumpet. One conversation was at the dining room table. His wife was serving dinner and he was being the ham.

This little guy was spied on a two way street in Queens a block from City Council Member Daniel Dromm's office. He was without any ID so I wondered if he was guerilla art. We were trying to do all the locations in Queens for Key to the City. Making tortillas at Nixtamal was great. We had 3 tamales and 3 tacos afterwards. They make a killer mole sauce! Eddies Sweet Shop was pretty cool too. We had a great chocolate malted! But my favorite had to be Louis Armstrong's house. One piece of fan mail came from Israel addressed to "Lois Armstrong, Rex Jazz, NEW YORK???" and somehow it got there. I guess Lois was one of Louis's 4 wives. I might have never gone had it not been for Key to the City, because I didn't know it was right here under my nose! All in all, a great one-day borough adventure in the Key to the City.

I was at Borders picking up the latest Linux Pro because they have a feature on open source 3D printing, and my friends at MakerBot were featured. I also grabbed the latest Make magazine while I was there. While I was scanning the categories looking for the hacking/coding section, I couldn't help notice where Playboy and Penthouse ended up: Culture and Society! This isn't at some backwater 7-11. It's at Penn Station in New York City.

I've been going to Neighborhood Barber for years. Ben has consistently made me look good. They are also one of the least expensive ways to look better in NYC almost instantly at only $14 a cut. Afterwards, go to the Ukrainian Home for some kasha, latkes, or borsht to keep in the Soviet spirit.
