This weekend behemoth produce will be rolled out at the UK National Giant Vegetables Championships. I'm not sure anything from my garden could be a contender. But if they ever hold a National Mini Veg Competition I could put my carrots forward.

Why people choose to grow giant veg is a bit of a mystery to me, but I guess that's how supermarket worshippers feel about those of us putting in months of effort to grow a tenner's worth of veggies for ourselves.

This programme about the pursuit to be crowned Giant Veg King (you'll notice a distinct lack of women growers, who are obviously too busy running the world) gives a brilliant insight into the awesome lengths these gardeners will go to. I can't decide which of them is my favourite, they're all so fantastic.

There's nowt so queer as folk.

They split them into four groups and it reads a bit like The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

There are: The Show Offs (who make a game out of kicking their gum way), The Careless (who don't care about littering), The Guilty (who know littering is wrong but find ways to justify it) and The Revolted (who want to get rid of old gum as quickly as they can).

If you recognise yourself amongst these categories you might want to change your ways. If you're caught littering with gum in Coventry you'll be fined £80 - and will probably die of embarrassment (unless you're one of The Careless).
We wave our fists as they pass us by on pavements, scoff as they saunter past stopped cars at red lights and tut at the ones who don't bother to wear helmets - don't they know they are just asking for an accident?

I'm not sure when pedal power became so roundly hated but the last few weeks have brought an undeniable deluge of ranting and raving about two-wheeled travel, but this renewed road rage seems to have been sparked by a story about Channel 4 anchorman Jon Snow, who was caught out in a Daily Mail 'sting', supposedly ignoring traffic lights and cycling on pavements.

The Mail reporter, hot on Snow's heels, followed his three-mile journey home from work, noting a dozen flagrant floutings of the Highway Code before disgracing the housewives' favourite by publicly revealing his cycling sins. (The shame!)

Snow's misdemeanours are deemed newsworthy because when he was made president of the Cyclists' Touring Club three years ago he said: "In particular I want to play a part in making cycling safer."

Well, let's admit it, there's nothing sweeter than seeing a figurehead caught out, and I can't defend the man for talking on his phone while cycling (tsk).

But anyone who ever uses Britain's roads must realise cyclists are stuck at the bottom of the food chain.

We're considered a nuisance to traffic (rather than being part of traffic) and we're a nuisance to pedestrians too. We're not wanted on the road and we're not wanted on the pavement - and our own designated territories, the sacred cycle lanes, are few and far between.

So must cyclists really be repentant when making the most of the half-way house they're stuck in?

No, according to Jon Snow, who took a leaf out of Edith Piaf's book, saying: "I regret nothing beyond the reality that in common with America and many other countries we need a serious national cycling strategy and REAL provision for cycle use."

"Look! Is it a stockbroker? Is it a quantity surveyor? Is it a church warden? NO! It's Bicycle Repair Man!"

London's first roadside bicycle repair scheme was launched today and I'd like to think it's a little something like this...

SE1-based Druid Cycles has a new team of trained mechanics with bike maintenance kits making their way round the capital - on bikes, naturally - repairing punctures and fixing skewiff brakes.

I can already hear the sneers from seasoned cyclists asking, "why can't people fix their own punctures?" But bike maintenance was one of the few dark clouds that hung over cycling for me before I got my bike and while I'm just about confident enough to fix a puncture at home now, I'm still more likely to just walk my bike home if I get lumbered with a problem while out and about. So if these guys encourage more people to give cycling a go, I think they're doing a top job.

"Wherever bicycles are broken or menaced by international communism, bicycle repairman is ready!"

It's the first time I've grown beefsteak tomatoes and each plant has only managed to produce two fruits (no doubt each one of these fatties demands a lot of water and energy from what is only a small and probably exhausted tomato plant), but they look so healthy and taste so good, it doesn't matter.

I love buying beefsteak tomatoes, but they're almost always imported from Holland where they've probably been grown in evil hothouses. Green guilt a go-go. So, growing my own has been a real win.

Tonight saw the first harvest and I crudely used the tomato in chunky slices with home-made burgers (made by a pal to Jamie Oliver's American recipe, but using Guinness and no egg- scrumptious).

Just delicious. I'll be growing them again next year.

A new campaign is urging Coventry to go meat-free on Mondays. And there's plenty of evidence telling us it would make us both greener and healthier.

The idea has been taken up city-wide in Ghent, while Belgium and Manchester have made school dinners meat-free on Mondays.

But by the looks of some of the comments from readers, Coventry might take a little more persuading.

Now, don't get me wrong. As far as meat fans go, I'm up there with the best of them. I like my steak blue, I go potty for a pork pie and it's hard to beat a bit of pigeon breast.

But I love vegetables too and I can't stand them being sidelined and made to play a 'bit part' in every meal. Sometimes they deserve to be cast in the starring role.

So Meat-Free Monday makes sense to me. But I'm intrigued to find that for a lot of people not only does it not make sense, it actually upsets or offends them.

None of us get shirty when health professionals are pushing us to eat 5-a-day, so what is it about meat that makes us feel so defensive?

a vision of blissful, safe and popular cycling from a land where the car isn't king

TO the raft of risks that stop children cycling independently (heavy traffic, stranger danger, etc.) we can now add the threat of a visit from social services.

That's what faces a couple who have encouraged their nippers, aged five and eight, to cycle one mile to school along the pavements of Dulwich.

Having weighed up the potential pros and cons of their kiddies journeying to school alone, Gillian and Oliver Schonrock decided the benefits were so great they outweighed the potential risks.

The ten-minute journey consists of cycling on wide pavements through the leafy suburb and, half-way there, crossing a road with the help of a lollipop lady.

But when the school got wind of the Schonrocks' travel plan, the head teacher called them in to explain that under current protocol the school has a duty of care for children on their way to and from the building and that the parents must either supervise the journey or be reported to social services.

This isn't the first time schools have frowned on cycling children.

Those of us with any sense of perspective know there isn't a paedophile lurking in every bush, nor a child catcher on every corner.

The major danger on the journey to school is the school-run traffic itself. So surely schools should be tackling congestion rather than berating people who are cutting it.

It's back! Allesley Park Walled Garden's monthly markets make a return this weekend.

From 10 to 12.30 today you'll be able to wander around the garden, which has been restored as an 18th century kitchen garden, and shop from stalls of fresh produce.

The morning will be devoted to "plant a pumpkin" activities for children, allowing visitors to take their plants home, nurture them and bring them back to the garden fully grown at Halloween time.

There are only six garden markets each year so make the most of it!

On the other side of the city London Road Allotments - Coventry's biggest allotment site - is holding an open day and barbecue.

Potential gardeners are welcome to have a look round the giant patchwork of hedged gardens and enjoy food and drink with the gardeners.

And if you're heading to the Kenilworth Festival, don't forget to stop at the BBC's Dig In display where you can pick up a free grow-your-own starter kit including seeds, or if you're an old hand in the garden you can get some advice from their expert gardeners.

So you think you don't like broccoli?

I spent the best part of 30 years eating it boiled, steamed, stir fried and I always liked the stuff but I would never say I loved it.

Until I roasted it.

If you haven't oven-cooked broccoli before I beg you to give it a go.

My fella - an incorrigible carnivore who attempts to sneak extra bits of meat onto the side of every dish I serve him - is batty about the stuff. Before now, the only veggies I could feed him without hearing a grumble were on the side of a Sunday roast (honey-glazed sweet roasted carrots and parsnips).

Last night he declared that his old favourites would score an 8, but roasted broccoli scores a 23. (No, I have no idea how this score chart of his works either, but I know he's casting a vote of confidence for roasted broccoli.)

Chop it into florets, or with purple sprouting just chop it into shoots, and roast the lot, with leaves too, drizzled with a bit of olive oil, at about 180C for 7 or 8 minutes. It's slightly crispy with a gorgeously deep flavour, a little like seaweed from the Chinese take-away (which btw is generally not seaweed but fried greens - where are Trading Standards?).

Sometimes I roast it with garlic slices and give it a squeeze of lemon before eating, or grate some Parmesan over, or add pine nuts or chopped walnuts.

Last night's dinner was a 10-minute wonder: purple-sprouting broccoli roasted at the same time as Stilton-topped mushrooms, served with pasta tossed in pesto. Bingo.
