Having recently designed and launched this course, Tower Hamlets Primary Care Trust has kindly offered to make this course freely available to all NHS professionals via the Health eLearning Portal.

This e-learning programme has been designed to raise awareness of pandemic flu as well as providing information on the practical steps staff can take for themselves at work as well as at home with their families and friends.

Pandemic Flu elearning course - "Resistance to Infection"

Benefits of the course

Understand the differences between a cold, seasonal flu and pandemic flu.

Have a clearer understanding on how to prevent the spreading of infections.

Obtain background information on previous pandemic flu episodes.

Understand how to look after yourself, family and friends during a pandemic flu period.

Recognise how serious pandemic flu could be and understand how our PCT is planning to respond to this issue.

Course modules

The course is organised into 4 modules (plus Introduction and Flu Game). Each of these takes approximately 10-15 minutes to complete, therefore making it easier to fit into each individual’s busy schedule.

Introduction

Infection Control

Introduction to Pandemic Influenza

Health Care During a Pandemic

PCT Pandemic Roles and Responsibilities

Flu game (can be accessed once the course has been completed!!)

Provide your staff with access

Some of your staff are likely to be registered on the Health eLearning Portal already. These individuals can access the courses by logging in and clicking ‘Catalogue’ > ‘Free Courses’ > ‘Pandemic Flu’ > ‘Instant Enroll.’

Others may need to register using the ‘Register’ tab. As soon as they complete their details, they will automatically be enrolled in the course. They can then launch it via ‘My Courses’ > ‘Pandemic Flu.’

One of the best ways to get the message to your staff is by sending them an email. If you would like help with this, then Course Source are able to provide a mail-merge template.

If you have any questions, or would like to see a demo, or simply need a helping hand with the above, then please contact Simon Perkins on sperkins@course-source.net or 07846 316608.

The ECDL learning materials licenses that were paid for by NHS Connecting for Health will expire at midnight on 20th March.

But don’t panic, enrolments can be extended even after they have expired! Here are your options:

1. If you have already purchased new licenses (i.e. to run beyond 21st March), then these can be used to extend the expired licenses on a per-user basis.
2. If you have NOT purchased any licenses and have learners that want to continue accessing the materials you can:

Purchase as many licenses as you need to extend old ones and/or enrol new learners. Each license gives a learner 2 years of access from when it is assigned to the learner, not from the purchase date.

Purchase “units” to extend only the ECDL modules that each user requires further access to. Each “unit” gives one user access to one ECDL module for 1 year. This could be much more cost-effective than buying full licenses.

Users (or line managers on their behalf) can purchase their own access (and other kinds of other e-learning) from our online catalogue. This facility does not appear if your organisation has Units or Licenses available.

Hosting and tracking of PRIMER (practise) TESTS will expire 1 year from original date of purchase, but can be extended by one year at any time by paying the same fee as last time.

LITMUS TESTS that you have purchased will remain valid for the duration of their 3 year shelf-life. You can continue offering tests even if you no longer provide ECDL materials at any BCS approved Testing Centre.

If you need to use this year’s budget and purchase things in advance, then you can do so without shortening the length of access.

For pricing and further information (including a report of learners whose licenses will expire), please contact Simon Perkins on 020 7689 9700.

NOTE: The Shockwave version requires higher bandwidth for running audio.

So far, 1,269 NHS staff form 60 organisations have completed over 2,500 hours of Health and ELITE using the Health eLearning Portal.

Remember, if you are still waiting for the National LMS to provide tracking for Health and ELITE, then you may like to consider accessing them for FREE at www.healthelearning.net.

With central funding coming to an end, what are the options available?

With the licenses that NHS Connecting for Health paid for ending in March 2009, now is a good time to start looking at how you can continue offering this globally-recognised qualification to your staff.

In the next few weeks, Course Source will be adding new versions of the ECDL materials and tests (for Syllabus 4.5 and Office 2007) to the Health eLearning Portal.

Anyone with a license (old or new) will be able to enroll in whichever version they choose. In other words, it doesn’t matter if you started learning using Office 2003 and have since upgraded to Office 2007, because you will be able to access whatever materials you need.

We will also be adding ECDL Advanced materials, although the tests will not be available until next year.

National Conference to be held in February 2009

To help you better understand what is available for ECDL and the Health e-Learning Portal, we will be hosting a national conference in January with a view to exchanging ideas on how the service can be improved and expanded upon, etc.

With the above in mind, we will soon be inviting you to take part in an online survey where you can offer pre-event feedback regarding preferred dates and location amongst other things.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss any of the above, please call Simon Perkins on 07846 316608 or email sperkins@course-source.net.

For information on other products and services you might like to see, visit http://www.healthelearning.net/news/

P.S. Remember, if you are using other ECDL materials and would like to manage them centrally alongside the courses that CfH have paid for, then the Health eLearning Portal can do exactly that. For more information and a free trial please reply to this email.

HealthELearning.net, already used by over 100,000 health professionals working in 200 NHS Trusts, is now e-commerce enabled.

Anyone can register on the portal and get direct access to a wide variety of cost-effective e-learning courses, simply by using a debit or credit card, so learners can start new courses almost immediately.

NHS Trusts, private healthcare institutions and individuals signed up to HealthELearing.net can choose to buy e-learning courses for themselves or other individuals, or even purchase courses for their team or training department.

Founder and Managing Director, Ken Wood, says:

“E-commerce enabling the portal brings good news to the health sector. It is now possible to purchase e-learning as a discretionary expense, instead of having to shell out considerable sums of money on licence fees. A line manager in the NHS or private healthcare organisation will no longer be forced to send a colleague on an external classroom course when they need the training urgently, but will now be able to use e-learning where appropriate for a fraction of the cost.”

As part of Course-Source’s ongoing commitment to develop and expand the site, new courses have been added to the HealthELearning.net including “NHS Continuing Healthcare, Common Assessment Framework (Managers and Practitioners)”, “Mental Capacity Act 2005″, “Adult Protection”, and “Caring for people with Dementia”.

Also featured in the extensive catalogue are courses in:

Management

Communication

Interviewing Skills

Customer Service

Diversity

Finance

IT
