Language, Mindset and Retiring in Costa Rica

The other I was reading a recent post from a major Costa Rica news group. It really really started me thinking. It was about the relationship between language and culture. Basically, language is responsible for every culture’s mindset. It is why we are all different and it also factors in to how well we understand another culture. That is to say it is easier to get a handle on another culture’s mindset the more of their language that we understand.

If you come to Costa Rica to live or retire it is of paramount importance to learn the language and interact with the people. As I have said before on repeated occasions and probably sound like a “scratched record” as they say in Spanish, “If you don’t know some Spanish you will always be a foreigner.”

Costa Rica has Sabor

Spanish dictionaries define the word sabor as flavor or taste. In figurative terms it refers to the ambiance or feeling that pervades something. If you choose to live or retire in Costa Rica you will most certainly be influenced by the sabor or flavor of the country’s culture. What I am really referring to is the country’s delicious lifestyle. I think that is what makes Costa Rica such a great place to live. Once you get the country into your system, you just can’t get rid of it.

Sometimes I walk by Central Park in Heredia or Avenida Central in San José and you can just feel the special energy in the air. No, I am not on drugs! You’d have to experience this to see what I mean. It is almost magical and uplifting.

Cellular Competition Will Be Countrywide Within Five Years

By the first week in November we will have a good idea of who will be competing with the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) in cellular telecommunications in Costa Rica as the Superintendencia de Telecomunicaciones (Sutel) gets ready to license three operators.

However, although the new operators must be up and running by September 2011, they will have up to five years (60) months when they have to offer a cellular signal across the country.

That is the SUTEL will allow coverage in three phases, the first to be completed within 12 months of licensing operator must provide service only to 132 districts of San José, Alajuela, Heredia and Cartago – the Central Valley.

In the second phase, which is to be completed within 36 months, service coverage area must include another 185 districts that include Puntarenas and Guanacaste and the third and final phase to be completed within 60 months must include the entire country.

Single Tourists and Retirees will make out well in Costa Rica

A recent edition of the publication “Travel and Leisure” considers Costa Rica a good place for those traveling alone. In the article the magazine considered the fifteen best places for single travelers. The most important factor taken into consideration was safety. According to the Global Peace Index Costa Rica ranks 27 out of 149 countries in terms of safety. Another important factor is the fact that Costa Rica was the #1 country in the category of happiness. All tourists feel welcome here.

Besides single travelers single retirees also feel welcome. On my monthly retirement and relocation tours I have many singles who eventually move here. Furthermore, over the years I have met scores of single male and female retirees who lead very happy and productive lives here.

First Costa Rican Squash Open announced

The Costa Rica Tennis Club in San José will play host to the first Costa Rica Squash Open tournament Sept. 8 to 11. Sixteen Costa Rican and international squash players will compete for a chance at their share of $6,750 in prize money. Among them will be Canadian Robin Clarke, ranked 71st in the world, and Mexican Jorge Baltazar, ranked 91st. Also playing is Costa Rica’s top squash player, Andrés Echeverría.

Currently, 11 of the 16 competitor positions are filled. Hopefuls will compete to qualify for the remaining five positions during elimination matches Sept. 6 and 7.

Traditionally, the Costa Rica Tennis Club hosts the annual Independencia Squash Tournament, an event in which Costa Rican and international players of all skill levels compete in 14 categories, including women’s divisions. The Independencia tournament will begin Sept. 6, running simultaneously with the Costa Rica Squash Open.

Frontier Airlines to fly direct between Liberia, Costa Rica, and Denver, Colorado

Beginning in February 2011, Frontier Airlines will begin offering a new route from Denver, Colorado, to Daniel Oduber International Airport in Liberia, capital of the northwest Costa Rican province of Guanacaste. Frontier has offered direct flights between Denver and Juan Santamaría International Airport outside San José since 2007.

The Frontier flight will leave from Denver at 8:25 a.m. Sunday mornings, arriving in Liberia at 2:35 p.m. The return flight will leave Liberia at 3:25 p.m., arriving in Denver at 8:10 p.m. The new flight will be offered only on Sundays.

Increasing the number of international flights to and from Costa Rica is one of the key goals of Tourism Minister Carlos Benavides.

After several months of delays and schedule changes, the office of the Telecommunications Superintendent (SUTEL) began accepting applications Tuesday from companies interested in competing in Costa Rica’s cellular telephone market. By 12 p.m., SUTEL reported that 11 companies had applied.

The country’s cell phone market was opened to private competition with the entry into force of the Central American Free-Trade Agreement with the U.S. (CAFTA) on Jan.1, 2009. The state-owned Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE) has been the country’s sole telecom services provider for decades.

Over the course of the next 45 days, applications will be accepted from interested companies that meet conditions set by SUTEL. These include proof of having provided cellular phone service for over five years in at least one country, have a minimum of 1.8 million subscribers, having been involved in the opening of a new market in at least one country and earning over $450 million per year in mobile services.

Chiquita Brands International Inc. says a new “biodigester” system installed in Costa Rica will turn organic material from banana farming into sustainable energy for its plant and fertilizer for local farmers.

The technology is now in place at Chiquita’s Mundimar S.A. facility in Guapilis, Costa Rica. The biodigester will convert fruit waste and processing water from banana operations into electrical and heat energy, and produce nutrient rich fertilizer material for local palm farmers. Cincinnati-based Chiquita (NYSE: CQB) said the process is carbon neutral.

Frontier airlines announced it will be start flying into Liberia on February 13, 2011, with weekly nonstop flights to/from its hub at Denver International Airport (DEN).

“The addition of Liberia is a great compliment to our successful service to San José and now provides our guests with greater flexibility to enjoy all the natural beauty and relaxation Costa Rica has to offer,” said Daniel Shurz, vice president of strategy and planning. “And we are excited to offer nonstop service to eight international destinations from Denver this winter.”

Frontier continues to be the only carrier to provide nonstop service between Denver and San José, Costa Rica, where it first launched service in November 2007, and Frontier is now the only carrier to provide nonstop service between Denver and Liberia.
