I just got an email from Wilson’s orchard, and this is the last weekend to walk around and take a hayride for the season. They are out of apples, but are selling Michigan grown Honeycrisp : $65/bushel (40lbs), in a crate which is yours to keep.

Organic Turkeys for Thanksgiving 2009 Cedar Rapids

We are taking orders for organic free range turkeys for Thanksgiving. Henry and Ila Miller, family farmers near Kalona have been providing turkeys for our CSA members for at least 7 years. They are wonderful tasting fresh turkeys.

The price per pound will be $2.90. You will pay when you pick up your turkey.

Henry says to expect smaller turkeys this year 12-15#. They have not been growing as fast as expected. Must be the year for farming challenges!

The turkeys will be available for pickup on Tuesday November 24th 4:30 to 6:30 PM

Fresh chickens

Hue Hill Farm will have fresh chicken available for pick-up this Monday, July 27 in Cedar Rapids at our Northside and Red Cedar drop sites, and Friday, July 31 at Red Cedar Farm.

Our chickens have access to open range creating a stress free environment. They are fed organic and transition grains. No antibiotics, medications, growth enhancers or genetically modified grains are used.

Chickens may be ordered whole or cut up priced at:

$2.90 per lb. for whole chicken

$3.00 per lb for cut-up chicken.

Chickens will be in the 5-6 lb range.

Another Downtown Market will be held Saturday, July 18 from 7:30 a.m.-noon. This special market will be an official “Green Day” with local organizations demonstrating various “green” projects, including recycling games, resources, cleaning projects, composite and plant displays, solar toys and more.

The market will be held along Third and Fourth Avenues and include Second and Thirds Streets SE and Green Square Park. Free parking is available at the Fourth Avenue parkade, Ground Transporation Center ramp and on-street. Handicapped accessible parking will be available in the True North parking lot along Fifth Street SE.

Entertainment for the July 18 market includes Kevin BF Burt, Dancer’s Edge, Twillering Starlets/Lin Mar Twillers, Open Mic, Library Story Time, Iowa Children’s Museum, street entertainment from Mark Brown and Junk Funk. A cooking demonstration will be hosted by DC Riverwalk. ImpactCR will be on site to launch their new program T.A.G. (Think. Act. Give.) and the Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce will be on site for their Buy In program.

Sept 26 Fall Fest Farmers Market Vendors Wanted

The 2nd Annual Ely Fall Fest is set for Saturday, Sept 26, 2009. The Ely Parks &
Recreation Commission is looking for volunteers. If you or your organization would be
willing to offer your time and talents - please contact the P&R Crew at 319-848-4103 or
email us at elyparks@gmail.com. Interested groups can help out as a service project or
as a potential fundraiser for their organization.
New to this year’s Fall Fest will be a Farmer’s Market and Craft Fair. The Ely Parks &
Recreation Commission is looking for interested farmer’s marketers and crafters. If you
are interested in having a market or craft table that day please let us know. The cost to
set up a table is $25 and you must be registered to participate.

Ely is located conveniently between Iowa City and Cedar Rapids.

I was contacted by the publisher of The Farmer’s Garden Website and it looked like an interesting concept, so I decided to pass it along here. It provides a way to give away or sell our extra garden produce to others in our community.

Here is the note I received:

I am a master gardener and my profession is programmer/project manager. This spring, I taught myself the PHP programming language to improve my professional skill set. To practice, I created The Farmer’s Garden website. The site, www.thefarmersgarden.com is a place where people can post free classifieds to sell, trade or give away their surplus backyard garden produce.

I launched my site in May 2009 and it is nationwide. I think it is a great resource for members of your community. It is very easy to grow more produce than you and your family can use. Why not share your local, fresh and delicious vegetables, fruit, berries, etc. with others?

Registration is free and required to post a classified. Registration is not required to search the classifieds. Can you please provide a link to my site, www.thefarmersgarden.com on your site?

Downtown Farmers Market

The Cedar Rapids Downtown District welcomes patrons to the second Downtown Farmers’ Market of the season on Saturday June 20^th from 7:30a.m.-Noon in Downtown Cedar Rapids. This year’s markets include a record breaking one hundred and sixty Iowa market vendors, live entertainment, cooking demonstrations, and fun activities for everyone to enjoy!

The market will be held along 3^rd and 4^th Avenues to include 2^nd ,3^rd Streets SE and Greene Square Park. Handicapped accessible parking will be available in the True North Parking lot along 5^th Street SE. The 4^th Avenue parkade will be free and open to the public, with additional on street parking available.

New features this season include open mic sessions, a Green Space sponsorship, recycling program, and a pet policy offering guidelines for patrons that bring their pets to the market. The pet policy includes a maximum 4 foot leash requirement, as well as basic health and social interaction guidelines. Another noteworthy addition to this season includes the acceptance of WIC checks by those vendors participating in both the City and Downtown Farmers’ Markets.

Entertainment for the June 20^th market includes Silverwings, Theatre Cedar Rapids, Jenny Cline Centre for Dance at Jane Boyd Center, Open Mic, Library Story Time, Iowa Children’s Museum, Cedar Rapids Kernels, and street entertainment from Mark Brown and Junk Funk.

Not directly related to local food, but if we want to preserve the land and water that make local food safe for consumption, we need to stop dumping petrochemical based fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides on our lawns!
