Dear Lord. People in Newfoundland, Canada want to sue the provincial government because they were hurt when they struck a moose on the highway.

People, you live in a land of thousands of moose. There is no way you can avoid a moose being out on the road. Even if you put up moose fencing. Someone is bound to be hurt or killed. It has happened in the past, it will happen in the furture. There is no way you can stop it.

There is one way you can reduce your risk of hitting a moose on the highway. SLOW THE F DOWN!

That's so ridiculous that you think the government is going to stop moose from wandering out on the road at night.

Perhaps you should just go after the moose instead. I hear they have an endless supply of twigs to eat.

Paparazzi Spot Moose On Vacation

It's one thing to see a moose in the middle of the road. It's a tall gangley creature which takes it's time crossing highways and gets itself into more trouble than they should be. An animal that big is out of place anywhere outside the deep woods. In fact I'm sure they would prefer to be in the deep woods. Moose are colored a dark brown for one specific reason. That is to blend into the underbrush which helps hide it from any predator bent on eating them. ie. coyote, wolf, wild dogs, humans.

It's a completely different thing to see a moose venture into the Atlantic Ocean in Southern Maine. A dazzling sight indeed. This moose evidently thought it was going to cool off and try to "hang ten" with other narly surfer dudes.

A family from New York State got the shock of their lives when they heard other beach goers yelling moose! The animal pranced right past their beach blanket (not pausing for the tanning lotion) and headed into the water. They were able to snap these two photos before Mrs. Moose went into hiding.

Seacoast Online who carried this story ended the article by saying, "Along with stopping at Long Sands Beach, the moose also toured the Nubble peninsula before taking a dip at Short Sands Beach and was last seen heading off into the wooded area on Shore Road, according to police."

Commmentary: "The moose 'toured' Nubble peninsula." Are we to believe that this was a planned tourist-moose event? :)

Remember that old adadge, "once in a blue moon?" It's a phrase most of us have heard or used to describe something that very rarely happens. So one would think that if a blue moon is rare, a blue moose would be even rarer, right? NOPE!

Just google it, go ahead I DARE you!

Chocolate Mousse

(6-8 servings)

Ingredients

1 3/4 cups whipping cream
12 ounces quality semi-sweet chocolate chips
3 ounces espresso or strong coffee
1 tablespoon dark rum
4 tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon flavorless, granulated gelatin

Directions

Chill 1 1/2 cups whipping cream in refrigerator. Chill metal mixing bowl and mixer beaters in freezer.

In top of a double boiler, combine chocolate chips, coffee, rum and butter. Melt over barely simmering water, stirring constantly. Remove from heat while a couple of chunks are still visible. Cool, stirring occasionally to just above body temperature.

Pour remaining 1/4 cup whipping cream into a metal measuring cup and sprinkle in the gelatin. Allow gelatin to "bloom" for 10 minutes. Then carefully heat by swirling the measuring cup over a low gas flame or candle. Do not boil or gelatin will be damaged. Stir mixture into the cooled chocolate and set aside.

In the chilled mixing bowl, beat cream to medium peaks. Stir 1/4 of the whipped cream into the chocolate mixture to lighten it. Fold in the remaining whipped cream in two doses. There may be streaks of whipped cream in the chocolate and that is fine. Do not over work the mousse.

Spoon into bowls or martini glasses and chill for at least 1 hour. Garnish with fruit and serve.

(If mousses are to be refrigerated overnight, chill for one hour and then cover each with plastic wrap)

I'm having a bad hair day

First things first... this is our 100th post at Cool as a Crazy Moose. Yay us. Please allow us a little self praise.

Secondly this article isn't about a moose as is the focus of this blog. Our motto, borrowed from the New York Times, is "All the moose that's fit to print." Since the story originates from the north country of New Hampshire where it's "all about moose", then we can discuss this topic here.

Yes Virginia, there is a Superman. He lives WAAAYYY up there in Colebrook, New Hampshire where he resides in his fortress of solitude, AND he drives a brake-less 1947 Willy Jeep. (who but superman would try that?) Surprisingly he is also a news reporter as is Clark Kent.

I have been a fan of his for years. I am what some may say a "flatlander," a term that describes anyone that lives below the notches. My only source of his writing is through my sister who, and I know this sounds very old fashioned in today's technology, uses scissors to cut his articles out of her local weekly Baysider and mails them to me using the US Postal Service. Yes, they all do arrive and rather timely at that.

Who is this mysterious person you ask? He is none other than John Harrigan of the North Country Notebook and that little paper called the Manchester Union Leader. I am amazed at what this man can do now and what he has done in the past. He is no spring chicken after all.

I'm also having a bad hair day

I have been keeping a list of his various roles. He has been a lumberjack, maple sugarier, a fire fighter. He nearly burned down his house using a Thanksgiving turkey AND helped to extinguish the blaze. It's a long story and very hilarious as he tells it and no one was hurt and no damage was done... except the turkey. In his illustrious news career he has held about every postion there is known in the industry. He is a writer, editor, publisher, photographer, worked on the presses. Heck he probably even delivered the papers by throwing them at peoples front doors!

That's all well and good but what else has he done you might ask?? Currently he owns an estate where he is a farmer, a hay bailer, raises animals, does his own tractor repair work. (he also chases tractors) He is obsessed with, and he freely admits this, wood piles. He has described in minute detail the process in which he collects his wood a year in advance from his forest and lets it cure. He cuts these trees into a certain lengths, then after it's cured it gets cut again into another certain length to fit into his outdoor wood furnace. (another obsession) I can't see as I blame him for having these obsessions as he is helping America become a little less oil dependent.

John is a hunter, fisherman, canoeist, camper, hiker and many other of the outdoor arts. He may even be an artist for all I know.

He wakes up every day at 4:00 AM, feeds the pets and reads several newspapers. As a good newsman, I'm sure they are read cover to cover. At this time he also cooks. In fact he cooks most of the family meals, something that he thoroughly enjoys. As he reads his papers he is cooking breakfast. Bacon, muffins, eggs, pancakes, hash browns, waffles, brews the coffee, and many other items are prepared. I would love to awaken to those aromas every morning.

At the same time he is planning and preparing lunch and the evening meal. But get this, the later meals are not cooked in the kitchen, they are cooked on his workshop wood stove as he works. Wow talk about multitasking! I can just envision him building a bird house and stirring the pot of stew at the same time. All this is probably accomplished before 9:00AM. Hey isn't that the US Army's motto?

Did someone say smile?

With all these jobs past and present one would think he wouldn't have time to himself. Well yes, he has managed to squeak out time enough to take a train from Boston to the West Coast and back, and write out it.

John prefers to do things the old fashioned way. His articles are filled with the way things used to be. Northern New Hampshire is the perfect place to learn about these ways as the old ways lasted a bit longer there than other parts of the country. I enjoy reading about those times. I guess I'm an old soul.

Mr. Harrigan, you are a north country superman. You might not be able change clothes in a phone booth (what's that?), or stop bullets or go faster then a speeding locomotive, but you sure can turn back time through your writing.

Sepia Saturday - Me vs.Criteria

Recently I have been scanning all of our families photos. There are thousands of photos both print and slide format, mostly shot by my mother. My mother was a very organized person and kept slides in proper slide boxes, almost all labeled. Our family's slide era lasted approximately 12 years from 1958 to 1970. Both before and after the "slide era" there were thousands of prints. Again these prints were organized meticulously into albums, all labelled. It's been a huge chore going through them all, but I am enjoying it as there are a lot of sweet memories.

When I came across this photo, it startled me. Why? This photo is of me! My first thought was, "is this a sepia?" The next thought immediately was, "am I that old to have a sepia of myself?"

Now I must ask you all, "sepia experts," what is the criteria used to qualify a photo as being in sepia? What do you look for? I have no clue, the only thing I look for is that certain shade of brown.

So I leave it up to you, the "sepia experts," my fate is in your hands. Am I sitting here in a sepia photo? Do I have a few more years to go? Am I relegated to become part of a history book?

You know what my answer would be... Give it to be straight. I can take it. :)
