A Movement Without Demands? | Possible Futures:

The question of demands infused the initial weeks and months of Occupy Wall Street with the endless opening of desire. Nearly unbearable, the absence of demands concentrated interest, fear, expectation, and hope in the movement. What did they want? What could they want? Commentators have been nearly hysterical in their demand for demands: somebody has got to say what Occupy Wall Street wants! In part because of the excitement accumulating around the gap the movement opened up in the deadlocked US political scene—having done the impossible in creating a new political force it seemed as if the movement might even demand the impossible—many of those in and around Occupy Wall Street have also treated the absence of demands as a benefit, a strength. Commentators and protesters alike thus give the impression that the movement’s inability to agree upon demands and a shared political line is a conscious choice.

The fall semester is in full swing, and the Connie Hogarth Center has wasted no time in getting active and hosting events.

On October 2nd, six students from the center attended the "One Nation Working Together" rally in Washington DC, sacrificing sleep and a precious Saturday night. As soon as we stepped off the bus at Robert F. Kennedy Stadium, we were engulfed in a sea of people- wearing colorful t-shirts, carrying signs, and chanting union cheers- we knew this rally was going to be huge. When we arrived at the Lincoln memorial, tens of thousands of people had already gathered at the steps and either side of the reflecting pool; we were greeted by lively music and the palpable energy of the crowd.

While walking around, we were bombarded with fliers, literature, buttons and stickers from every kind of organization from Jobs with Justice to Code Pink while listening to the words of figures such as Medea Benjamin and Harry Belefonte.

Though long and tiring as the day was, we returned to campus inspired and empowered by the energy of the rally and the willingness of people and organizations to transcend ideologies, disagreements and individual goals to come together for a day of solidarity and unity.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to Address International Conference at Riverside Church

On the eve of the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will address the “For a Nuclear Free, Peaceful, Just and Sustainable World” International Conference at the Riverside Church.

The UN Secretary-General’s participation in the international conference reflects the urgency and importance of the engagement of grassroots peace and disarmament movements in the drive to eliminate nuclear weapons. Ban is urging the nuclear powers to take immediate steps to fulfill their NPT disarmament obligation, and has put forward a “Five Point Plan” calling on them to begin their promised ‘good faith negotiations’ for nuclear weapons abolition.

Grammy Award-winning band The Klezmatics are globally-renowned world music superstars. The group's eclectic musical influences combined with their human rights and anti-fundamentalism themes led to their collaboration with The Guthrie Archives. On their CDs "Wonder Wheel" and "Woody Guthrie's
Happy Joyous Hanukkah," The Klezmatics set Guthrie's lyrics to music in collaboration with Nora Guthrie.

Comprised of David Bernz, James Durst, Mark Murphy and Martha Sandefer, Work o' the Weavers is a group that recalls the spirit of the original Weavers by providing an echo of their timeless music and some insight into their story. In addition to their interpretations of Weavers material, the group enjoys playing modern music in the Weavers trajectory.

Iconic singer and gifted songwriter Pete Seeger has been making music since the early 1940s when he travelled with Woody Guthrie. As co-founder of the prolific folk quartet The Weavers, Seeger shot to international acclaim with songs like "Tzena Tzena, Tzena" and "Goodnight Irene." Over the years,
Seeger's music has been covered by the likes of The Byrds; Peter, Paul and Mary; and Judy Collins. Still performing at age 90, this Voice of Justice and winner of the National Medal of Arts (the highest honor conferred on an individual artist created by the United States Congress and present by the
American President) continues to influence and inspire his 3rd and 4th generation of audiences, activists and luminary musicians alike.

A fellow original member of The Weavers, Fred Hellerman is a singer, guitarist, songwriter and producer. Along with Seeger, Hellerman helped to arrange many of The Weavers' hit songs. He also produced Arlo Guthrie's Thanksgiving anthem "Alice's Restaurant."

WORKSHOPS, PLENARIES, ON A RANGE OF HUMAN RTS CONCERNS—STARTING IN REID CASTLE ON THE MANHATTANVILLE COLLEGE CAMPUS.

HE SURVIVED TO WORK WITH THE TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION COMMISSION AND REV DESMOND TUTU, AND THEN FOUND HIS INSTITUTE FOR HEALING OF MEMORIES, AND SPEAKS AND DOES WORKSHOPS ALL OVER THE WORLD.

Francis Ole Sakuda is part of a tour of people from Kenya to talk about Maasai cultural practices, human rights and the rapid environmental changes that confront the Maasai of Kenya today. He has an M.A. in International relations.
