Bake Me a Cake

Melting The Chocolate

The Icing

Chocolate on Top

All Finished

The Inside

Plated

300g Dark Chocolate Chopped

250g Butter

5 Eggs

1/2 Cup Caster Sugar

1 1/4 teaspoons Baking Powder

3/4 almond meal

Prehead the oven 150 %

Moist Chocolate Cake:

1. Melt Butter & Chocolate in Saucepan over low heat and stir til melted and smooth. Set aside.

2. Beat eggs and sugar in the bowl with a mixer for 8-10 minutes until pale and thick.

3. Sift flour and baking powder over egg and sugar mix and gently fold through with almond meal and chocolate mix.

4. Line a 23cm tin round tin and bake for 50 mins until cooked. Test with a skewer,

Butter Cream Frosting:

250g Butter

1 cup Sifted Icing Suger

1 Teaspoon vanilla essence

Beat butter until light and creamy. Add the sifted icing sugar and the vanilla essence and beat until well combined. Spread over completely cooled cake and refrigerate.

Stripe melted chocolate over cake with a teaspoon (your bench will get covered). Approx 10 melted chocolate buttons.

Cake will keep for about a week :)

I have an obsession with Amber. I love all shades of it and pretty much anything made of Amber ends up on my WANT list. The necklace I wear permanently is from my Mother and is a gorgeous piece of Amber. I consider amber to be signature stone these days and am currently on the hunt to add more pieces to add to my collection.

I love the idea of tiny pieces of History embedded within the stone that I can carry around with me. The colour is also always gorgeous and plays into my love of all shades of orange, peach and warm golden tones.

I wore this to work on a day when it was 36 degrees and was soooo happy I did. Got a lot of compliments on the top.

I am looking forward to wearing this lace top with lots of different colours underneath. Its got a really lady like feel and I rather enjoyed pairing it with shorts to break that up a little.

I love the tailored shorts. They are light cotton, super comfy and easy to dress up and down! Utterly my favourite buy of the summer.

I am currently sitting on the 35th floor of the most amazing hotel on the Gold Coast. Wind blowing in my hair feeling relaxed and utterly super stress free. I did not realize until I got here how badly I needed a holiday! But I did and I am here and its incredible!

The weather is amazing which considering that the a large part of this state is under water is bizarre and makes me feel extremely guilty for enjoying it!

This weekend I decided to try out my new mixing bowl, piping bag and measuring cups that I got for my birthday. I decided on cupcakes since my lot the halloween cupcakes turned out amazingly... This time wasn't such a success sadly...

The icing went way to runny to pipe so I have yet to try out all the fun tips on my piping bag. Still they taste delicious and with a bunch of 100's and 1000's on top they look like they belong at a kids party which suits me just fine :) but I think I may love pyrex a little more than is natural...

I wore this out and about running errands today. The Dress is one of those that looks awful on the rack but great on! A very comfy cool summery dress with a nice amount of stretch to it. Glad I let the Boutique girl make me try it on (I've learned to trust her judgment & she has yet to steer me wrong)

For Christmas I received a new tripod and a remote for my camera! Exciting! So no longer do I have to con my sister into taking my outfit photos! Its a bit of a learning curve so expect some less than awesome ones for a bit while I figure it out!

Inspire Me: Christina Hendricks

Lately I have been bored with my regular make up style so I decided to tackle something completely different. I started looking for inspiration on blogs, youtube, celebrity sites and everywhere I went the woman that made me stop and look was Christina Hendricks.

The first time I saw here was on Firefly as Saffron. I loved her then but as Joan Holloway on Mad Men she is phenomenal. I also love the fact she is a redhead because you don't see to many of those in hollywood or indeed many women at all who look Ms. Hendricks.

Until two months ago I was rubbish at gel eyeliner but with lots of practice I have gotten better as you can see below. I really enjoyed trying something completely different in terms of my style. I'm wearing lipstick which is a HUGE change for me! Not that long ago I was discussing lipstick with Kim of the amazing Pop Couture (Seriously why are you still here go check her out!) and saying how I never wear them (and her telling me I so should) so I decided with this look to go with Lipstick over Gloss :)

I wish the pictures showed just how different this is. The eyeliner pops so well and my eyelashes look amazing since I am (for once) wearing more than one coat! Non shiny lipstick is also super different and I rather love the extra colour its given me.

I am no Christina Hendricks that is for sure but I am in love with Gel Eyeliner and am certainly going to do this look again now I have gotten over my fear of eyeliner and lipstick.

I am currently lusting after these glorious sunglasses. I only own one pair of sunnies despite working in a shop that sells the silly things.

They are sitting on the shelves at work and even with my discount I am umming and ahhhing over the price. They look lovely on and I try them on daily. I am so going to give in sometime soon and buy the darn things I bet. I am sick of squinting every time I leave work!

Perfumed Bliss

Salvatore Ferragamo - Bliss

For my Birthday my darling Mother bought me perfume, it is called Bliss by Salvatore Ferragamo and it comes in the gorgeous bottle pictured above. Now I know the bottle plays no part in the smell or the wearing but I do love a pretty bottle to display! I don't wear perfume very often but this one is delicious. I honestly could not tell you what it smells like other than "yummy" but here is what it all the websites say:

"A sparkling fruity floral fragrance. Sublime, brilliant, spirited & sensual. Top notes of yuzu, kumquat, apple. Middle notes of freesia, water lily, rose. Base notes of musk, sandalwood, cedarwood"

Personally I picked it because it wasn't incredibly fruity but I would definitely agree with the fresh and floral. Also not over powering or old lady like. I have worn it everyday since I got it and think it is well on its way to becoming my signature scent!

Exterminate! Exterminate! aka Best Birthday Ever!

Remote control Daleks

My sister bought me these kick arse remote controlled battle Daleks for my birthday. I was like a little kid at Christmas tearing open the box jamming the batteries in. My cats are not particularly happy about my newest toy.

The Daleks are remote controlled and battle each other via Infrared sensors in the front of their bodies (like laser tag sensors), as well as spouting saying such as the classic "You must be exterminated" and getting rather upset if you happen to pick them up and yelling at you "We are the Supreme beings".

I would seriously suggest these toys to any Dr Who fanatic out there who would like to drive their own Dalek around. If you would like your very own 4 inch tall terrifying "Supreme being" head on down to an ABC shop. Not sure on the price to be honest since it was a present!

Now if you'll excuse me I'm off to chase a kitty!

I danced in the rain. I got soaking wet, took photos and looked like a total loonie. But I danced because it made me happy.

Sometimes you have to take joy in the little things. So Go! Dance in the rain, get a slice of cake and really truly enjoy it without complaining about breaking your diet, hug your Mum, Dad, Sister, Brother and if all that fails go to a pet shop and hug a puppy! Do a good deed, paint your toe nails an eye popping colour! Do something today that makes you happy!

Take joy where you find it, even if its fleeting! Now if you'll excuse me there is a cupcake with chocolate icing calling my name and a cat I need to pet!

New Specs!

I like wearing glasses, everyone in my family wears glasses and considering I work for an optometrist for a living I am well aware of how a new pair of specs can change a persons whole look and sometimes outlook! I got my old pair of glasses about a year ago (right after I started working at my job) and I get loads of compliments on them.

I didn’t take excellent care of them and now they have a scratch on the lens and the colour is coming off a little (not that anyone but me would notice) so I decided I wanted a new pair. My first pair took me 6 weeks to choose. My new pair took me about 6 months. I wanted a really light colour as black frames just washed me out, I wanted them to be simple on the sides as I don’t like bling and I wanted them to match my face perfectly!

A simple task it was not! I tried on at least a hundred pairs of frames, every time one of our brand reps would come in I would try on nearly everything that looked vaguely possible!

Finally these babies came along! Lovely Dior Frames in a gorgeous champagne colour! Perfect. I ordered them on the spot!

So far with my new pair I have received a lot of compliments as well which is nice.

A couple of tips for picking glasses:

If the frames looks to big/small ask if it comes in a smaller/bigger size. Most optical frames come in multiple sizes (Sunglasses usually only come in one)

Black washes a lot of people out! If you like the style ask if it comes in a tortoise shell. Tortoise shell acts like a neutral, is more flattering on nearly everyone than black and is readily available in most designer frames!

Don’t be overly concerned about how the frame fits when trying it on. If its to loose or slides down your nose the practice will be able to adjust the fit on most frames for you. If your not sure ask if it can be adjusted to fit as some things can be adjusted and somethings can't!

Anti Reflective/Multi coatings are worth the extra cost! . They allow the light to pass through the lens which is what makes it way easier to see your eyes. It is more attractive and more comfortable to wear. If you look at my photos you can barely (if at all) see my lenses!

I am always honest with customers about whether I think a frame suits them, and I spend a lot of time everyday helping people pick frames. However not every Customer Service Rep is going to be as honest. If you think they are just trying to get you to buy the frame come back with a friend.

Try on anything that you like the look of, even if its super different to what you already have. You might look silly or it might look fantastic! You never know til you try them on!

Please do not say “You are going to hate me” or “Im really fussy about my glasses” Everyone is! If I had a dollar for every customer who said this to me I would be rather well off!

Finally I had a little old lady tell me that “Picking glasses is like picking a new nose!” By which she meant Glasses are like feature of your face just like your nose so you want to get something that suits you, looks good, is comfy and that you can live with seeing everyday!

Halloween Cupcakes

Halloween Cupcake with Chocolate Spiderweb

So I attempted baking again, this happens every 6 months or so with varying results. It is usually for an event of some sort like a birthday or a party. This time it was for a halloween party. I had so much fun making the spider webs for these!

Chocolate Cupcakes with Orange Coloured vanilla icing and Chocolate Spider web decorations.

The cupcakes are from packet mix, the icing is your standard Butter, Icing Mix and Milk affair. The spider webs however took some doing (but were no where near as hard as I thought!)

I used this template which I found via Amazing Moms Blog and followed her instructions. I did use dark chocolate rather than white and I piped my icing on using a star tip. There are a lot of amazing tutorials on youtube on how to pipe icing I discovered and its no where near as hard as it looks!

Couple of things, it pipes better once is a bit cooler (e.i not burning your fingers hot and running out the end of the bag) Perfect spiderwebs are not a requirement in fact they look better once dry a little blobby as seem above!

But once completed taste awesome! Baked anything cool/yummy/fun lately lovelies?

I got my darling sister to take these photos for me when I got home and I had already ditched my shoes, coat and scarf and couldn’t be bothered putting them back on!

I am trying to be a little more stylish in my work wear rather than just throwing on whatever and I got lots of compliments on my outfit today (basic as it is) so that was rather nice.

I also spent a rather large amount of money on new makeup today (mainly lip products) which I then got home and promptly tried out so my makeup is freshly done for the photos!

Defying Gravity

Idina Menzel As Elphaba

Hi Lovelies,

Long time no see! I wanted to say hi and l let you know I Have a new obsession currently. I saw Wicked the Musical. My Favourite song is as your can probably tell Defying Gravity I even bought a shirt with this on it.

For all the Gleeks out there Elphaba was played by Idina Menzel in the first Broadway production. Idina plays Shelby Corcoran, the coach of the rival glee club Vocal Adrenaline on Glee for those who don't know.

The song was also performed on Glee by Kurt and Rachel

This song had me almost singing along in the theatre on saturday and its a powerful anthem about not letting things hold you back. I have had it on repeat (the broadway version) since I got it last night!

Since I was told to get over my mental block very kindly while having an awesome chat about blogging and its various ups, downs, challenges and all that goes along with adding that feather to your cap with the Lovely Kimberley from Pop Couture who kicked me into writing I thought I would share with you my current obsession since thats why I started this blog in the first place!

By downloading some software that runs in the background you can have your laptop form part of a network that detects earthquakes. Newer laptops like ones made by companies like Apple and Lenovo have senors in them to detect if they have been dropped to switch the hard drive off to protect your data but a clever cookie has come up with a way to use these sensors to detect Earth quakes. If enough people download it hopefully it could form part of an early warning system! Neat huh!

I have noticed that I along with a lot of people have a weird attitude towards value based on how “physical” things are.

I came to this conclusion as I was standing in line to buy coffee whilst browsing the app store on my iPhone. I pay $3.50 for coffee everyday. I was browsing for apps (I am debating learning to cook) and was looking at the free and paid ones. Most of them clock in at around $3 bucks though some are up to $10 *le gasp* so I hit the button for the free list. I got to the front of the line and ordered my coffee and handed over my $3.50 and the cognitive dissonance of my actions hit me.

I am willing to pay $3.50 every day for coffee. Each and everyday I hand over $3.50 and get coffee. I don’t hand over $3.50 and get coffee everyday for ever more with updates if the technology improves! Its not a perfect metaphor but you see my point.

If I buy an App I will get the app for whatever the cost (My Trip View Ap cost me $2.49) and the updates are (generally) free! I get that function everyday for whatever the one off cost was! Access everyday for that one off cost! But I am loath to pay that cost! loath to pay the cost for an “intangible” object as it were. I can’t hold taste or taste it the same way I can my coffee but does that diminish its worth?

We are hardwired to the concept that when we hand over our money we should get something concrete in return. An object or failing that a service. I pay $79 a month for my phone plan. That includes a certain amount of calls, text, and data. I can’t touch any of that but its a service that I am used to having access to. The older I get the more I pay for and rely on this service. So obviously the fact I can’t touch or taste something doesn’t diminish its worth.. So why the auto reaction to not paying for digital content?

The apps in the Itunes store take a lot of skill and knowledge to build, hours, days if not weeks and months go into making them and the updates. The apps have complicated background stuff going on in the backend that I don’t see that. I see the shiny touch screen buttons and a smoothly functioning app that sits there doing what I tell it! Which really should be worth at least as much as a cup of coffee, If not more!

Then I started looking at other digital property and content. What came to mind was Blogs and Web comics. We have seen the phenomena of free content grow wildly over the last 5-10 years. Bloggers and Web comics artists put enormous amounts of work into the content that is put out there on the internet for free.

Writing a single blog post takes ages, topic like this requires research, Posts with photos require editing, time and effort to put together, posts like link love and Love and lust haves take me upwards of HOURS to put together! All of this is done out of interest and love not for monetary gain from my blog.

I remember a Blogger put ads on her site a couple of years ago and her readers went crazy, telling her she had sold out, yelling and jumping up and down in entitled rage. Like 5 year olds having a synchronized tantrum. How dare she try and get something back for all her hard work! It was ugly, nasty and those who understood the decision which required a site redesign defended her as best we could but in the end the readership was fractured and the community that had been built up around this blog was damaged a great deal. All over a bloggers desire to recoup her server hosting costs!

Our generation (and those older) feel entitled to all the information of the ages for free, and then not just any information but new and exciting content everyday free! GIMME GIMME GIMME! We absorb it at an incredible rate! TV is free (with ads) unless you pay for cable (and even cable has ads now) We want to be entertained all the time, and our needs are great! The more we get the higher our expectations get!

Not only do we feel entitled but when our exceptions are not met we are comfortable demanding, bitching and moaning. I have seen people comment on peoples blogs and ask where new posts are (not in a concerned “haven’t heard from you in a while” way) Seen people post snarky “blogger missing” threads on forums, Threaten to stop reading and following over ads (the putting of them up, the content of them or the placement etc)

I am guilty of wanting free content. I love freeware, I love blogs, youtube is awesome, and will try out that free app first but I have also bought apps to get rid of ads (convenience and the annoyance of ads wins out over my cheapness!) So when things are not free I get that pull. I am reluctant to pay for something that someone has undoubtedly worked hard on!

The realization that digital content such as applications and blogs have as much value as real life counterparts is something that I am gradually accustoming myself to but I think the more that the internet becomes a factor in business and more blogs appear that create quality content, webcomics of the incredible standard and businesses move online we are going to have to get used to the idea that digital content doesn’t mean free and that if we want people to value our own content we need to start valuing others!

What do you guys think? Do you pay for digital content? Does having your own blog/webcomic/being a developer change your view of how much digital content is worth? is digital content worth the same or less than physical content (i.e books and magazines?) Let me know in the comments!

I am always losing coins in the bottom of my bag and since I catch a bus every day I always need somewhere to keep the mass amounts of $2 dollar coins I constantly have! I think this cutie would do perfectly! Only two left so if you want one too better get in quick!

[2] Glasses Necklace from Forever 21

I am obsessed with all things optical and the second I spotted this necklace it was love at first sight (he he he I made a funny) I would wear it every day to work along with the glasses earrings I featured in Work Style in Progress

[3] Basic Blazer from Bardot

I need a new basic Blazer! This one is a lovely shape and not out of my price range so may actually be mine sometime soon ...

[4] Lace Up Boot from Swedish Has Beens

While I am not sure I could work these into my daily style these boots are epically cool! Would love to own a pair just for the sake of owning a pair! Alas a lust because way outside the range of something I would buy just to say I owned!

[5] Travel Mug by PrettyNPreppy (Etsy)

My coffee at work always gets cold because I don’t have time to drink it! This lovely travel mug would solve that problem and look stylish while doing it!

[6] Absolutely Alice by Opi

A gorgeous shade of blue that I would only be able to wear on my toes (since work means my fingernails get to damaged!) and no one would see since in winter I live in boots! BUT I don’t care I want it anyways because although the movie wasn’t as magical as I would of liked the visuals were still delicious as this colour!

Oooh how I love these guys! Not just to eat either. They are gorgeous to look at too!

[8] Medium Tumbled Leather Hobo Bag from Burberry

I really really want a new bag. This one is gorgeous and I will drool over it for a very long time! If anyone out there loves me enough *puppy dog eyes*
