2009 Whale Shark Research Dates set at Utila Lodge

The Whale Shark and Oceanic Research Center, based on Utila Island in the Honduras Bay Islands, has posted dates for a joint research and recreation program with Utila Lodge. Activities include PADI courses, photo ID, tagging and DNA sampling, whale shark encounter trips, and SCUBA diving/snorkeling.

Honduras to host First Annual Mesoamerican Birdwatching Festival in February 2009

This February, the Central American country of Honduras will host the first annual Mesoamerican Birdwatching Festival, organized by the Mesoamerican Ecotourism Alliance (MEA). Honduras was selected by MEA as the first country to host this event, during the fourth annual Mesoamerican Sustainable Ecotourism Conference in Antigua, Guatemala in December 2007.

The 39ft catamaran Nina Elisabeth II, operated by Capt. Vern Fine is now operating daily trips from Roatan to Utila. At 6-10 knots, crossing time averages 4 hours depending on weather and stops for dolphin and whale shark encounters.
