Greetings and salutations to all Concise Bahamas News Readers!

After months offline Concise Bahamas News is back. That's right, Bahamas Local has decided to buy CBN, which consists entirely of yours truly, Dominic Duncombe.

Starting Monday, January 4th, you can enjoy the same quality story selection and summaries on a brand new site.

To find it, go to www.bahamaslocal.com and click on the News tab in the categories at the top right of the page. Or you can go directly to the news by clicking www.bahamaslocal.com/news.

Now that CBN has funding, I'll be passing along the benefits to you with lots of new features. The first change is that the stories will be more current, with summaries from the current days papers.

Woman pleads guilty to killing newborn

A woman pled guilty to killing her newborn baby on Thursday.

Stacia Adderley, 19, will return to court for a sentence hearing on April 17. In the meantime she will be remanded to Sandilands Rehabilitation Centre for a mental evaluation.

Police beat tattoo artist

A local tattoo artist said police brutally beat him after mistaking him for another man.

Kevin Flowers, 22, said officers took him from his home on Wednesday night looking for a man who was staying with him.

Flowers said about six officers took turns hitting him before releasing him from the Arawak Cay police station. He has flied a complaint with the police department.

Thieves force manager him to open safe, then tie him up

After attacking a man outside his home, robbers took him back to his job where they forced him to open a safe, tied him up and drove off in his car.

The men - three of them, all armed and masked - attacked the Tyre Empire employee at 5.30pm Wednesday.

Grand Bahama success

GRAND BAHAMA: One Grand Bahama resort is staying afloat with a 78% occupancy rate and chartered flights from Europe.

Roberto Paresce, general manager of the Viva Club Fortuna, said the hotel has laid of staff but has been able to keep roughly the same numbers as previous years.

The company is looking forward to business from a direct flight from France to Freeport in May.

Testing Wind as alternate power source

GRAND BAHAMA: The Grand Bahama Power Company has begun testing to see if wind could serve as an energy source.

The study will measure wind duration and speed and take about a year to complete.

Prime Minister's fishing boat tampered with

ABACO: Police were flown to Abaco last week Friday to find out if the Prime Minister's fishing boat was used in a robbery.

Officers are sure that the 21-foot vessel was tampered with and are questioning two men in connection with the incident.

Relatives want justice for dead relative

Relatives of Deron Bethel say they are still waiting on their day in court, three years after he was shot outside his home by an off-duty police officer.

Eyewitnesses said Bethel was shot when the policemen was investigating a domestic dispute at a neighboring house.

At Deron’s funeral in 2006, placard protesters marched
to Lakeview Memorial Gardens demanding “no cover-up.”

A 26-year-old man was shot at his home after a disagreement with another man.

Police said the victim was shot several times after opening the door of his home around 10pm on Thursday. He had had an argument with the shooter.

Man killed in motorcycle crash

Peter Knowles was killed when his scooter collided with a truck at the Prospect Ridge and John F Kennedy Drive intersection on Thursday.

Knowles was crushed by the truck after turning onto JFK Drive. The Truck Driver, shaken by the crash, was taken to the hospital in an ambulance.

Speech from a man who did not talk for 17 years

Well I had to give you one more TED talk. I loved this one and so did my father. It's funny and insightful.

It's about the environment, life and what you can do when you make up your mind to do something. I'm not the first person to say that when you want something badly enough the whole world conspires to give it to you.

I learned a lot from it and I hope you do to.

Government money affairs 'disastrous'

Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham said government earnings were in a bad state in the House of Assembly Wednesday.

The PM said "January, February and March have been disastrous." Minister of State for finance Zhivargo Laing said the government collections are more than $100 million lower than expected.

Government said company should turn over funds paid

The government released court documents on Tuesday that stated Global United had collected but not turned over much of the money it owes.

GUL CEO Jackson Ritchie said he is going to close his company today (Friday) after government demands that he pay $8 million in debt.

But the Finance Ministry said the company has been already been paid much of this money from its clients - including Carnival Cruise Lines and Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines – and that some of the debt has been outstanding since 2006.

15-year-old dead in apparent suicide

GRAND BAHAMA: A 15-year-old boy was found dead in his closet, as though he hanged himself with a necktie.

Police said they were called to the home of Carlton Hall Jr by his mother around 7pm Tuesday and soon after discovered his body.

'Mother' Pratt's husband dies after diabetes struggle

Josepth Pratt, the husband of St. Cecelia MP Cynthia Pratt, died Wednesday afternoon after a long struggle with diabetes that included amputating both legs.

Pratt, the country's first female deputy prime minister, had said that deciding whether to authorize surgery on her husband's leg was one of the hardest decisions she has had to make.

Bahamas thinks Britain should take it easy on Turks

Following a decision by CARICOM, The Bahamas has decided to file a report asking the British government to shorten the amount of time it plans to control the Turks and Caicos.

Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham said each country plans to file a report in with Britain after CARICOM members decided that suspending major functions of the nation's government would weaken democracy, especially for the two years proposed.

Chinese workers protest again

About two dozen Chinese workers protested Wednesday, saying they have not been paid for months of work.

The workers held placards outside the T G Glover Primary School, their worksite, protesting the E R Hanna construction company.

The construction company said it has paid the salaries to a Chinese company responsible for the men but was now planning to send them home to China because of the conflict.

Man said police wanted him to lie about murder

Speaking in court yesterday, Dwight Knowles said Vaughan Carey accused him of murder after police offered each of them a chance to lie about the other.

Knowles said he did not know Vaughan Carey and that they had never talked about robbing Keith Carey, who was killed in 2006.

Driver fined $2,500 after killing his friend in crash

A man whose best friend was killed in an accident when he crashed into a pole has been ordered to pay $2,500.

Dominique Moss told the court he lost control of the car when he swerved to avoid a cow on Gladstone Road.

In passing sentence, Justice Isaacs said, "This is a tragic case... all sides have been saddened and brought to tears more than once."

Judge judges Judge for bad judgment

Read storyLawyers say a Supreme Court judge forced them to accept an accountant by threatening to leave the court room if they did not agree.

Senior Justice Anita Allen criticized Justice John Lyons' decision to appoint the brother of a woman that he was "more than friends with" in a ruling on Tuesday.

Daniel Ferguson, the accountant, was chosen to review financial documents in a matter to decide how profits should be shared between three unnamed parties.

Lawyers in the matter said Lyons had forced the accountant on them, threatening to leave the court if they objected. When asked if his actions were an ultimatum Lyons replied, "you bet it is".

Students left with no insurance

Read storyStudents at at least seven public schools are without insurance because of the liquidation of CLICO.

School officials are being forced to get special permission for field trips and are not sure what to do to make sure the children are protected.

Like other policy holders they are hopeful that some good news will emerge as the liquidation continues.

The school's affected include: C.R. Walker Senior High, C.V. Bethel Senior High, S.C. McPherson Junior High, E.P. Roberts Primary, Garvin Tynes Primary, Oakes Field Primary, and Thelma Gibson Primary.

Ministry investigates expired drugs

Read storyThe Ministry of Health said it is investigating claims that an Elizabeth Estates Clinic gave out expired insulin.

Health authorities said so far they have found adequate supplies of several types of insulin in stock at the Elizabeth Estates Clinic pharmacy and that the earliest expiration date is October 2009 and that most expire in 2010 or 2011.

Bahamian student earns top honour at Florida military school

Read storyA Bahamian student has been named one of the top students at the Admiral Farragut Academy in St Petersburg, Florida.

William Saunders III will have his name added to a school plaque listing their top achievers at a special unveiling ceremony on April 3.

During his three years at the academy, Saunders was president of both the Key and Lion's Clubs as well as captain of the sailing, soccer, and track and field teams.

Saunders managed all this in addition to military responsibilities including head of all the school dormitories and playing a leading ceremonial role when the school staged parades.

At age 16 he piloted a plane when former US presidents Ronald Reagan and George Bush Sr visited the school having earned a pilot’s licence before he could drive.
