Issue:
In case of keyring not accepting your password, type this in the terminal:
sudo rm ~/.gnome2/keyrings/login.keyring
This will reset the keyring password. when the system prompts you for a keyring password again, leave it blank (just press enter).

In case the LiveDVD takes you to the login prompt, type ubuntu as username and leave the password blank.

How to Fix an Ubuntu Error: "No init found. Try passing init= bootarg"

This morning, a friend came to me with his laptop that won't boot. At every boot attempt, his Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx system outputs the following error messages:

mount: mounting /dev/disk/by-uuid/***************************** on /root
failed: Invalid argument
mount: mounting /sys on /root/sys failed: No such file or directory
mount: mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: No such file or directory
mount: mounting /sys on /root/sys failed: No such file or directory
mount: mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: No such file or directory
Target file system doesn't have /sbin/init
No init found. Try passing init= bootarg

Busybox v1.13.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.13.3-1ubuntu7) built-in shell (ash)

Booting into "Recovery Mode" as well as choosing the other kernels listed in grub didn't help at all.

Solution:

1. Boot from the Ubuntu Live CD;

2. Open/Run Terminal;

3. Type: sudo fdisk -l (to get the device name) then press ENTER;

Disk /dev/sda: 250.1 GB, 250059350016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

If you're a Windows user and new to Ubuntu, you may prefer to have the "Windows" key (the key with a Windows logo) launch the main menu. To do this, you need to run the Gnome Configuration Editor:

1. Press ALT+F2 and type: gconf-editor in the dialog box, then press ENTER;

2. On the left pane, go to Apps-->metacity-->global_keybindings;

3. On the right pane, double-click the panel_main_menu, change the value to: Super_L then click "OK".

That's it. Now everytime you press the "Windows" key, the main menu will pop up.

1. Insert the broadband USB stick to any available USB port on your computer and wait for a few seconds, or until the LED indicator turns steady blue (ZTE MF627 modem);

2. Left-click the Network Manager applet located on the system tray;

3. Select "New Mobile Broadband (GSM) connection";

4. Click "Forward";

5. Choose country (Philippines);

6. Choose your ISP (Smart/Globe/Sun);

7. Click "Forward";

8. Click "Apply";

9. If the system asks you for a keyring password, assign a password then press "OK" (leave it blank to disable keyring password prompt at startup);

Currently there is no GUI option to turn on subpixel font rendering or smoothing in Lubuntu 10.04. But don't lose hope, we always have the terminal. Just follow these easy steps:

1. Click the "Menu" panel button;

2. Go to "Accessories" and click "LXTerminal";

3. In the terminal, type this command: sudo nano ~/.Xresources then press Enter;

4. Copy and paste the following:
Xft.dpi: 96.0
Xft.hinting: true
Xft.hintstyle: hintslight
Xft.antialias: true
Xft.rgba: rgb

5. Press CTRL+X;

6. Press Y then Enter;

7. Restart your system.

How to Make Epson T10 Printer Work in Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx

The Epson T10 printer, which previously worked in Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala using the T20 driver does not work anymore in Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. It gets detected and installed but won't be able to print. When sending a print command, the printer just makes noises for a few seconds, blinks the indicator light, and sits there without printing at all.

The problem lies on the following packages:

libgutenprint2 v5.2.5
cups-driver-gutenprint v5.2.5

To make the printer work in Lucid, you have to downgrade the above packages to v5.2.4.

Steps:

1. Remove the existing packages by typing the following in the Terminal:
sudo apt-get remove libgutenprint2 cups-driver-gutenprint

2. Download the following packages, depending on your system (32 or 64 bit):
libgutenprint2 v5.2.4 (32-bit)
libgutenprint2 v5.2.4 (64-bit)
cups-driver-gutenprint v5.2.4 (32-bit)
cups-driver-gutenprint v5.2.4 (64-bit)

3. Proceed to the folder containing the downloaded packages, then double click libgutenprint2_5.2.4-0ubuntu2_*.deb to install (cups-driver-gutenprint depends on this package so you have to install it first).

4. Install the cups-driver-gutenprint_5.2.4-0ubuntu2_*.deb package.

5. Now it's time to lock the packages to keep them from being upgraded. Run Synaptic Package Manager and search for the packages you just installed, highlight the package. Once the correct package is selected, click Package -> Lock Version.

If you want to use the Terminal:

a. Open the terminal
b. Type sudo -s and hit enter
c. Enter your password for sudo
d. Type echo libgutenprint2_5.2.4-0ubuntu2_*.deb hold | dpkg --set-selections
(replace * with either i386 or amd64, depending on your system)
e. Type echo cups-driver-gutenprint_5.2.4-0ubuntu2_*.deb hold | dpkg --set-selections
(replace * with either i386 or amd64, depending on your system)
f. Run sudo apt-get update and then sudo apt-get upgrade.

That's it! The printer will now work in your system.

Safe mode is a special way of booting Windows when there is a system-critical problem or a virus that interferes with its normal operation. The purpose of Safe Mode is to allow you to troubleshoot Windows and try to determine what causes it to not function properly. In safe mode, Windows will have reduced functionality, thereby allowing you to easily troubleshoot your system and attempt removal of viruses (many of them won't start when Windows is running in safe mode). Unfortunately, many computer viruses today such as Bagle, Virut, and Sality disable Windows' safe mode by deleting the SafeBoot registry key and its subkeys. Some even go far by continuously monitoring the registry and will delete the registry keys again as soon as you restore them.

Making use of a LiveCD, or scanning your system hard drive for viruses from a virus-free computer is still the best way. However, in case you don't have access to a LiveCD or another computer, you can do the procedures below:

- Run a program that will restore the SafeBoot registry with permission entries that will deny Administrators and System accounts to delete the key. This way, the virus can’t delete the keys because it lacks the permission to do so.

Extract and double-click "UndeletableSafebootKey.exe" to run the program.

- Restore the subkeys by merging the appropriate .reg file with the Windows registry.

NVIDIA 196.75 Driver Alert

NVIDIA has hit some snags with their latest round of WHQL drivers. The drivers have been interfering with the fan operation on certain NVIDIA video cards, resulting in the GPU overheating. NVIDIA has taken down the drivers in question, and has asked to pass along the following message:

We are aware that some customers have reported fan speed issues with the latest 196.75 WHQL drivers on NVIDIA.com. Until we can verify and root cause this issue, we recommend that customers do not download this driver. Instead, please stay with, or return to 196.21 WHQL drivers. Release 196.75 drivers have been temporarily removed from our website and we also are asking our partners and others to remove temporarily this 196.75 WHQL driver as well.

Driver Rollback/Removal Instructions

Option 1: Roll Back To Your Previous Driver:
If you installed your current driver without first uninstalling the previous version, you can simply roll back your driver to the previous version using these steps:

Windows XP steps to roll back your driver:
Click Start
Click Control Panel
Click Performance and Maintenance and then System (in Category view) or System (in Classic view)
Select the Hardware Tab
Click Device Manager
Double-click on Display Adapters
Double-click on your NVIDIA GPU
Select the Driver Tab
Click on Roll Back Driver
Windows Vista or Windows 7 steps to roll back your driver:
Click Start
Click Control Panel
Windows Vista: Click System and Maintenance and then System or simply System (in Classic view). Windows 7: Click System and Security and then System.
In the left pane, click Device Manager
Double-click on Display Adapters
Double-click on your NVIDIA GPU
Select the Driver Tab
Click on Roll Back Driver

Option 2: Uninstall the Current Driver:
When you installed your current driver, if you first uninstalled the previous driver you won’t be able to roll back. In this case, follow the same steps that you previously used to uninstall your driver. Once complete, you can then download and re-install the recommended driver.

An ISO image is an archive file (also known as a disc image) of an optical disc in a format defined by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). It is basically a single (usually large) file with an ".iso" extension that represents the entire contents of a CD or DVD, and is a format often used to distribute large programs over the internet.

The most important feature of an ISO image is that it can be easily rendered or burned to a DVD or CD by using a media authoring or disc burning software. It can also be opened using archival applications such as 7-Zip file manager or the WinRAR shareware archiver. ISO burning is now typically a native feature of modern home and business computer operating systems.

In Windows 7, the new native support for ISO image burning addresses something that’s been on the wish list of many Windows users for a long time (before Windows 7, you have to download a third-party software in order to burn an ISO image to a CD or DVD).

To access this feature, double-click on the ".iso" file and a "Windows Disc Image Burner" dialog box will appear.

Better(?) Font Appearance in Ubuntu and How to Install Windows Fonts

Everyone has their own preference when it comes to fonts, and some users, like me, are not happy with Ubuntu's huge default fonts.

1. Install Windows fonts (most websites will render nicely with these fonts installed).
In the Terminal, enter the following command:

sudo apt-get install msttcorefonts
or
sudo apt-get install ttf-mscorefonts-installer

2. Download this tar file for additional fonts (MacOS fonts):
click here to download
3. Navigate to your /home folder (~/) and press ctrl+h to show hidden files and folders.
4. Create a new folder named .fonts and extract the fonts from the tar file to this folder.
5. Setup your system fonts. Go to Preferences->Appearance->Fonts.
In my system, I have the following font settings:

Application font: Bitstream Vera Sans Roman (8.6)
Document font: Aquabase (9)

Desktop font: Lucida Grande (9)

Window title font: Trebuchet MS Bold (9)
Fixed width font: Bitstream Vera Sans Mono Roman (10)

6. To change the font rendering settings, choose "subpixel smoothing (LCDs)" and click the "Details" button. Under "smoothing", choose "Subpixel", and choose "Slight", under "hinting."
