You must have come across various errors while installing programs in your computer. One of the most common causes of such error is due to the configuration problems of the windows installer software which is installed on your PC. Ever seen the wizard which helps you in installing software on your PC? It is windows installer at work. So any problem with this installer will lead to improper installation or un-installation of the programs. Some of the reasons on account of which the windows installer is damaged are listed in the following sections. Windows installer as like any windows program is tightly integrated into the registry. An error in the registry is more than enough for the installer utility to stall. Interruption of the current installation service will also lead to such lockups. It means when you try to install two different programs on the PC at the same time, then installer errors may occur. The above statement can be had in inverse too, that is when the same installation of a program is started twice then also installer errors may crop up.

Take a closer look at the task manager while you are installing software. You will find a process termed MSICUU.EXE being listed. This is the windows cleanup utility at work. You might also find another process MSIZAP.EXE which is run simultaneously. The latest version can be downloaded off the official Microsoft update website. After installation the utility can be listed in the All Programs tab. On invoking the software all the programs which were installed on the computer and which had used windows installer for its installation will be found listed. Do not be surprised if you find the utility too being listed in the available programs because the utility also used windows installer.

Either one program or all the programs can be selected. But you can do multiple selections with the help of Shift or Ctrl keys. Care has to be noted that the utility does not uninstall any programs. It just removes the installer information from the database. It should also be noted that once the installer information has been removed from the database, then it is difficult or impossible to remove the software the usual method, using the add/remove program paradigm. Reinstallation is the only available option to run the programs which were treated with windows installer cleanup utility.

Administrative privileges must be given to the utility, else error message will be shown. If you are currently logged in a guest account, run the utility after logging again into the administrative account. In higher versions of windows such as windows vista, you can use the Run as Administrator option available. Reregistering of the msi.dll files must also be done in certain cases to eliminate error messages. If you wish to remove the utility you can always resort the normal way. The utility will be listed in the add/remove programs and can be removed from there. Always make sure to download and install the latest version of windows installer cleanup utility.

There is a general trend which is associated with computers. Just like automobiles they need to be taken special care of. Else problems maybe resulted and with the passage of time, such problems may turn to something which might take more time to be fixed. The development of a problem within a computer is analogous to a snowball rolling down the hill. Initially the size of the snowball will be small, but as the ball rolls down the hill the size keeps on increasing. Likewise one error might lead to an errors, which might in turn lead to another and the process continues until the computer is beyond the reach of recovery.

In this article we shall be looking into some of the easy methods to keep your computer clean of errors. And instead of relaying on third party utilities it is better to stick with the options which are already available as in built into the computer. The list is topped by disk cleaner. So what exactly does disk cleaner do? It searches the hard disk for error causing and non error causing junk files and removes them safely to the recycle bin, so that they can be deleted safely at a later time. Disk cleaner must be run at least once in a week or once in a month depending on the frequency of disk activity.

In the computer there is always constant disk activity. Files are written and rewritten at a faster pace and this progress is always done from the time you boot up the PC to the time you shut down the computer. This will result in the fragmentation of data all about the hard disk drive. In other words, the different parts of the same file will be placed all around the disk drives. So what is the result of such a process? The hard disk drive takes a lot of time to access the data, because it has to search for the data at different parts of the drive. With the help of inbuilt defragmenting tools the files are kept closer so that the drive doesn’t work that much and will result in higher performance.

Registry errors as well as errors caused due to improper DLL files must also be taken into consideration. The causative agents for registry and DLL errors are more or less the same. Improper shutdown of the PC, along with booting up and improper software installation un-installation process will lead to the registry and DLL errors. Some of the DLL files are shared by more than two programs and if one of these programs are uninstalled, then all the associated programs will start displaying error messages. Registry entries are created whenever any activity is done on the PC, and these registry entries tend to accumulate with the passage of time. Registry error checking as well as defragmenting utilities is available. Always install a good antivirus firewall combination to inhibit malware infection.

Registry errors and DLL errors are usually caused due to improper shutdown and startup of the computer along with improper installation and un-installation procedure for software programs. Windows installer cleanup is especially useful in troubleshooting in such situation. The detailed working of the utility is discussed in this article. The utility is touted to be a lifesaver when you are facing registry and DLL errors. One of the major disadvantages associated with the product is the reinstallation of all the software programs which are already installed on the computer in certain cases. Why? This is also suitable explained on the article.

The situation is well known. You get your hands on some latest software program. You try installing the program on your PC with the intention of trying it and buying it if you like. But by the middle of the installation process the computer becomes unresponsive and you are forced to do a manual reboot of the computer by pressing the reboot button. After booting up you notice the program is being listed as installed on the computer, but when you try to invoke the program, it doesn’t seem to respond or you get some error message. Ok, you try to do the installation process once again and for this you will have to uninstall the existing installation. But sadly that is also not possible, because when you try to uninstall the program you are bombarded with a series of error messages. Does the above scenario ring any bell?

Fear not help is at hand thanks to windows installer cleanup. This program supersedes the entries listed in the add/remove programs and will help in the deletion of the program files. Now there is a confusion which should be addressed in this point. Windows installer cleanup do not uninstall any software programs. They just remove the corrupted installation files and this will enable you to reinstall the software program once again. Once the installation files are deleted, then the program can be removed or upgraded. The reader must understand this basic difference and must not consider windows installer cleanup as some form of miracle product.

Care must be taken to install the latest version of windows installer cleanup utility, because the earlier versions were comprised of many bugs. Separate versions are available for the 32bit and 64bit OS users. Care must also be taken that full permission is given to the utility when running of the computer. If you have logged into some guest accounts, make sure to logout and enter the administrative account and re-run the software. When the utility is run within windows environment, the erroneous installations are being listed and it is only the matter of seconds before the computer will be clean of the corrupted installation files. Looking into the finer aspects we find that an entry to the installation files is only deleted. So when the utility is reinstalled the program deletes the older files and installs newer files. This is how the utility is designed to work.

Many people find routine PC clean up too much of a hassle and choose to live without it. They find, for instance, the idea of opening up their computer casing and passing a blower through it too much work. They also find the idea of uninstalling software programs they installed but which they don’t ever use a bit off-putting, rationalizing the continued stay of the same software programs on the computers with saying that they might yet need them one day. Even the idea of removing redundant items and shortcuts on the desktop feels bad, with the people who want to avoid doing it rationalizing the continued stay of the redundant items and shortcuts on the desktop with a saying to the effect that the presence of so many shortcuts and items on the desktop shows that they are consistent (and serious) computer users.

Yet there are a number of very significant reasons why you should clean up your computer on a regular basis.

For one, the accumulation of clutter on your computer – clutter here being things like programs you don’t use, duplicate files and so on – slows down your computer. Indeed, it is not unknown for people who don’t ever clean up their computers to end up with machines that are actually slower than them. You know that you computer is getting slower than you if you can type a sentence and have to wait for a few seconds before it appears on your screen! And if this happens regularly, then it might be time for you to consider some serious PC clean up.

Another reason as to why you should clean up your computer regularly is because some of the elements that make up clutter in your computer also end up consuming your computing resources. Redundant programs, for instance, eat up computer storage space. And if such redundant programs are configured to run automatically when you start the computer (as they tend to be), then they end up increasing the time that you need to get your computer to start up. If you find that you have time to make a cup of coffee between switching on your computer and your actually being able to use it , then it might indeed be time you considered some urgent computer clean up because you really have a problem. In terms of competing with you for your own computing resources, computer clutter behaves like weeds (which compete with the useful crops for nutrients and other resources on a farm), and as any good farmer will tell you – the thing to do with weeds is to uproot them at the earliest opportunity.

Another reason you should clean up your computer regularly is because the accumulation of clutter on your computer especially on the most visible area (for instance having numerous redundant items and shortcuts on the desktop) leads to stress and feelings of disorientation. Deleting these things as part of your regular computer clean up is therefore bound to infuse you the feelings of clear-headedness and a sense of control which, by the way, are some of the major components of happiness.

The need for regular PC clean up is incontestable. Accumulated clutter on the computer, has for one, been known to slow down computers and in some cases to even cripple them completely. Such clutter also ends up competing with the computer user for the computing resources that the user has invested in. And like all clutter, such computer clutter (especially the visible bits like obsolete files and shortcuts on the desktop) ends up stressing the computer user, making him feel as if there is too much work and as if they have lost their sense of control and so on.

Having established the need for regular computer clean up, many people are left wondering how to go about it. As it turns out, unlike computer clean up as undertaken on the hardware components (where it usually is just a matter of wiping here and blowing there), computer clean up as undertaken for the software bits can be a lit bit more complicated as it calls for a certain degree of technical discernment.

Fortunately, there is a class of software known as PC clean up software which is meant to help you with the task of de-cluttering your computer. There are a number of reasons why you should consider employing this PC clean up software in your computer clean up routines.

For one, PC clean up software gives you the opportunity to save on the considerable blocs of time you would have spent flicking through the various directories in your computer and deciding which files are clutter and should thus be deleted and which files are still useful. PC clean up software saves you such time by giving you the option of just specifying the criteria files need to meet to be deleted (or to be kept) and the directories (folders) such files are to be and then clicking on a button and having the software select and delete files that would have taken you ages to select and delete manually.

Secondly, PC clean up software gives you the opportunity to clean up sensitive parts of your computer – for instance the registry – without running the risk of deleting an important component unwittingly. Now this is important because deleting some components of your computer registry during clean up can completely cripple the computer forever. The best PC clean up software, on the other hand, is programmed to steer clear of these sensitive parts of the registry while thoroughly also cleaning up all the clutter around them. It is, however, worth being sure that you have a good PC clean up software, before entrusting it with your computer’s registry because in all honesty, if this gets messed up, you will be left with a shell for a computer.

Thirdly, of course is that through the use of PC clean up software, you have a way of automating your computer clean up routine, so that (after your pre-setting it) the software just cleans up the computer upon the expiry of so many days and on such and such a criteria. This way, you are sure the trash in your computer will get disposed off even if you are the ‘forgetful type’.

Nothing is more frustrating that a slow computer. Computers are meant to be fast and efficient, and if you find your computer taking longer that you would manually take to do the same things, then clearly the computer is not serving its intended purpose. And if your computer is increasingly slowing down – there is a possibility that at least one the reasons behind the slow-down is accumulation of dirt and clutter in the computer.

Clutter in a computer usually takes the form of things like programs you downloaded and installed on your computer long ago that you no longer use – but which continue to use your computing resources because you continue to accommodate them in your computer’s hard disk. Program developers tend to set them by default to run as part of your computer’s start –up, and if this is indeed the case with the redundant programs in your computer’s, then chances are that apart from eating up your computer storage space, the redundant programs are also slowing down your computers start up. Indeed it is not unknown for computers that are cluttered with many such redundant programs that automatically run on start up to take longer than what healthy early computers (the Pentium 2 of the old for instance) used to take to start up.

Clutter in a computer also takes the form of redundant application files stored in various directories in the computer. These are files (for instance word-processor documents and spreadsheet workbooks) that you made up long ago, used them for whatever you wanted to use them for, and then forgot to delete them once you were through with them. Clearly, these types of files eat of your computer’s storage space, hampering the overall performance of the computer.

Another group of common culprits in cluttering computers is made up of duplicated files. These are files that you still use – but which are duplicated on various directories of the computer – and not for back-up purposes.

Redundant registry entries too are yet other culprits for cluttering computers – and these can be particularly dangerous as they not only hamper the performance of your computer, but can also cause registry errors, which if unchecked can completely cripple your computer.

The thing to do with computer clutter is to clean it up.

In the old days, this would have involved opening the various directories that make up your computer – and painstakingly deleting the redundant items one by one. It would also have involved opening the registry using command like ‘regedit’ and deleting the erroneous registry entries – with the ever present possibility of deleting sensitive entries that could cripple your computer completely. But thanks to the now widely available computer clean up software, most of which is free, there is an easier way to go about computer clean up. Most of this software is able to automatically detect redundant items on your computer and delete it – leaving you with a faster and more efficient computer.

There are no easy answers to this situation, but there is a very huge chance that accumulation of clutter is the reason behind your computer’s sluggish performance. And conversely, while we cannot be certain, there is a very huge chance that regular computer clean up is the reason behind the ever-buoyant performance of your neighbor’s computer.

As it were, the nature of computers and the way we interact with them nowadays makes them very prone to accumulation of junk. Nowadays, for instance, there is so much free downloadable software – most of which is very tempting in what it promises to help you achieve – that a person who installs every software they come up across soon ends up with a cluttered computer. Indeed, if you tend to install all manner of programs on your machine and your neighbor on the other hand tends to only install the software they need, then this could very well be the reason his computer happens to be faster than yours. The problem with most of the free software we install on our computer is that it tends to soon get forgotten about. Yet even though you forget about the software once you are through using it, your computer doesn’t. The software remains lodged in your computer, eating up your computing resources. Clearly then, there is need for regular PC clean up to remove this software once you are through using it – otherwise it hangs on there, and continues leeching on computing resources, often leading to sluggish performance.

Another reason that makes modern computers particularly prone to accumulation of junk is the ease with which we create files nowadays. In the old days before Windows – when we were on DOS for instance, creating a computer file used to be a long drawn affair, involving your typing in of a number of command lines to make the file possible. To put in all this effort clearly, you had to know why you were creating the file. With windows however, making a file is as simple as a few clicks here and there – and it is therefore not unknown of people making files on the computers and forgetting about them the very next moment. There are also those computer files that we make unwittingly – and which many of us don’t even recognize as files. Take for instance the desktop shortcuts we make (on our desktops) to various resources stored further inside the computer. Very few people recognize that each desktop shortcut constitutes a file by itself (independent of the computer resource it points to) and therefore eats up considerable space on the computer’s disk – just like any other file. As with redundant programs, then, there is also need for regular computer clean up to rid it of these accumulated redundant files – which can in the long run eat up considerable storage resources on the your computer – leading to the sluggish computer performance we started by mentioning.

Many people, having been sensitized on the benefits they can derive from good computer clean up software wonder where they can possibly get such good computer clean up software. As it were, there are so many PC clean up software programs on the market that one finds it hard to sort the wheat from the chaff. Matters are not made any easier by the fact that objective reviews of these computer clean up software programs are rather rare – and when they happen to occur, not many people bother to read them keenly.

Now the need to ensure that you are getting the right computer clean up software can never be overemphasized. A piece of computer clean up software is a program you entrust with some of the most sensitive parts of your computer, for instance, your computer’s registry – given that registry clean up is always part of the computer clean up routine. Clearly, you cannot entrust the sensitive contents of your computer’s registry to an amateurish program, because damage to the registry can very easily mean the end of your computer’s life. Hence the need to ensure that you are looking at good computer clean up software program, before entrusting your computer to it.

So what makes a good PC clean up software?

Firstly, the makers of the software have to be credible people. Don’t just look at the software; give a look to the people behind it too. Software from the established vendors of technology products who have a reputation to guard is likely to be better than software from un-established vendors who have nothing much else to lose should their program prove to be ineffective or harmful. Of course this is not a blanket endorsement of all PC clean up software programs from the software powerhouses – it is just a suggestion that such software is likely to be well done, because in addition to having reputations to guard, the bigger players are also like to have bigger research and development budgets. And neither is it a blanket condemnation of the products by the smaller players – as some of these have also been known to work well, sometimes even better than the products by the established players.

Secondly, a good computer clean up software – like any good product – delivers what it promises. And while you have no certain way to know whether a product does indeed deliver before you use it, you can check on various software forums about what other users’ experiences with the software have been like. If they have been positive, then chances are that you too will have a good experience with the software. If they have been negative, then chances are that you will not be the exception.

Thirdly, a good computer clean up software program is easy to install and uninstall. A program that insists on leaving its traces on your computer once you are done with it could be malicious. Free PC clean up software programs are particularly notorious for this. Check out in the forums what other user’s experience with a program’s un-installation have been like – if such experiences happen to be on the forums.

Finally, and of course, a good computer clean up software is easy to use. There is no use installing a program that you won’t know what to do with. Such a programs is more likely than not to end up being unused and (with time) turn into clutter on your computer – the very thing you are trying to beat with computer clean up software.

Any introductory computer course will tell you that a computer is made up of hardware and software. Hardware components of the computer are the visible and tangible devices and peripherals that make up the physical computer while the software components are the programs – which though intangible and invisible – provide the instructions through which computer is able to perform its various functions.

Accumulation of dirt on either the hardware components or the software parts of the computer is bound to cause problems in the functioning of the computer. And although many people are able to notice and perhaps act on the accumulation of dirt on the hardware components of their computer (because such dirt is a highly visible eyesore), very few are able to notice the accumulation of dirt on the software components of their computer, much less to do something about it.

Dirt on the hardware components of the computer usually accumulates in the form of dust, food bits on the keyword and the mouse and so on. Dirt on the software components of the computer on the hand tends to occur in the form of clutter, this being un-used programs installed on the computer, duplicated documents saved on the computer, accumulated registry entries and so and so forth. Unfortunately, many of the elements that make up dirt in the software components of the computer are things that many people don’t recognize as such (as dirt) and which they are therefore less inclined to do something about.

The PC clean up to be done on the hardware components of the computer should really be quite easy enough. It generally involves the elimination of dust and other dirt particles accumulated on the computer components – and tools used for this role range from a piece of cloth dipped in alcohol (spirit) to quite sophisticated blowers used to blow away fine dust particles lodged on the various elements of the computer inside the casing and on the keyboard and the monitor.

PC clean up to be done on the software components can be trickier for some people, though it is in fact less physically involving than the PC clean up done on the hardware components. PC clean up done on the software components ranges from the use of registry clean up software to clear redundant (and erroneous) registry entries to the use of anti-virus software to rid the computer of virus and spy-ware that might have found their way into the computer and that are in all honesty, dirt in the computer. PC clean up as done on the software elements also includes de-fragmentation (windows comes with a de-fragmenting tool) which can help you save on disk space. And of course, a discourse on how to clean up your computer won’t be complete without mentioning something about clearing your computer’s desktop by deleting unneeded files and shortcuts. It might seem inconsequential, but doing clearing your desktop of all clutter tends to leave you with a good clear-headed feeling – and should thus be included as a part of your regular PC clean up routine.

Watching most people’s approach to PC clean up can be amusing. As it were, many people concentrate on cleaning up a computer’s outside, while leaving the inside filthy and cluttered. It is not hard to sympathize with them.

Many people are, for one, not aware of the need to clean up their computers inside’s. They are not aware that, as with a cup or a plate, the cleanliness of the inside of a computer actually matters more than the cleanliness of its outside. A computer that is cluttered in the inside, for one, is bound to be slower than a computer that is de-cluttered regularly. This is because the various elements that make up clutter on a computer also end up eating up the computer’s resources – in essence competing with you for computing resources that you bought. If part of the clutter for instance happens to be redundant programs (programs installed on the computer but unused), then there is a good chance that the programs continue to run in the background – using your computing resources – even without your being aware of their doing so. And even where they don’t do so, still the amount of storage space required to store the executable files and other supporting files that make up these various programs is massive – and is definitely storage space that you could put to better use. Clearly, then, a PC clean up exercise that does nothing about clutter accumulated on the inside is not effective – and every computer user needs to be aware of this fact.

There are of course, computer users who are aware of the need for internal cleaning of the unseen elements of the computer – files and programs as mentioned – but who choose to ignore it, either because they feel it is too much work or it is too technical. As it were, while cleaning up the computer’s externals is rather physically involving (with blowers and all), it is not really technically challenging and therefore appears easier that cleaning up the internal (unseen) elements – which inevitably involves some weighty decisions on, for instance, what to delete and what to leave intact – and so on.

The way to clean up computers effectively, however, is to clean both the dirt and dust elements accumulated on the hardware parts (with blowers and all) – while also cleaning up the clutter that happens to have accumulated in the software parts of the computer. Indeed, as mentioned, a PC clean up exercise that does nothing about the elements in the inside is utterly ineffective.

And unlike what many people imagine, cleaning up the computer’s insides is not really hard – especially with aid of the now widely available computer clean up software. Most of this computer clean up software actually comes for free nowadays – and can go a long way in helping you de-clutter the insides of your computer. Some can even be set to automatically clean up the computer after such and such a period of time, so that the task is effective delegated and you don’t have to worry about it at all.
