Since that's all done, I have returned to my usual schedule and blogging as well. SXSW was amazing in many different ways but one thing it really helped me understand was that if you are looking for a perfect band to not only join but fit with your customized style, SXSW and Austin will usually be all you need.

I began my search for a band in January to play live again and pass the time in between composing gigs. I also wanted to find a band that would let me do some producing with them and perform on a regular basis. After a few days at the festival many bands did catch my interest but most would not have fitted my unique playing style because they are so traditional. However, on Friday I did come across a cool group named Digital Antique; so after talking to the head organizer and guitarist we have arranged a meeting soon.

The band is comprised of two guitarists, a violinist, Bass(or)Cellist, and a drummer. Their musical style stretches from bordering on the more dance side to trance and progressive classical elements. I am attracted to this band combination because they are along the lines of what I play as a pianist and producer and don't have a singer to disturb the instrumental ambiance.

I will keep everyone updated on how the first gig goes and also if I get to find and play with a few more bands in the near future.

Talk soon and leave a comment.

Reuel

GRAMMY PIANO TOUR '06

Here is an interesting piece of news I found the other day searching online. I had almost forgotten that I was one of the high school students who performed when the Hilton Harmony Tour of 2006 come to Austin. It was in association with the Grammy foundation and the Hilton Hotels. I was chosen as one of six high school performers to play and it was a great honor because so many famous artists had recently performed on that very same piano during the tour. There were signatures covering the piano and here is a list of the most prominent names who performed and signed:

Tony Bennett, Mary J. Blige, James Blunt, Mariah Carey, Kelly Clarkson, Sheryl Crow, Ellen DeGeneres, the Dixie Chicks, Herbie Hancock, Tom Hanks, Terrance Howard, Linkin Park, Maroon 5, Coldplay's Chris Martin, Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor, Keith Urban, Kanye West, and Stevie Wonder.
Here is some more information at www.csrwire.com

"Hilton Harmony Tour Piano's Cross-Country Journey Culminates in Raising More Than $100,000 for Music Education. The six-foot grand piano boasts more than 110 celebrity autographs, each one representing a $1,000 donation from Hilton to the music education programs of the GRAMMY Foundation(R). The year-long tour earned more than $100,000 for the Foundation, touching the lives of hundreds of local school children along the way.

Just prior to last year's 48th Annual GRAMMY Awards, Hilton Hotels and The Recording Academy(R) launched the Harmony Tour program, bringing the issue of music education to the attention of GRAMMY performers, nominees and presenters. For each artist that signed the piano, Hilton pledged to donate $1,000 to the GRAMMY Foundation. The
Harmony Tour piano debuted backstage at the 48th GRAMMY Awards in February 2006, held at the STAPLES Center, collecting autographs from musicians and celebrities who appeared on the show."

MUSIC IS ALIVE!

I have been doing a lot of study lately on the interaction between music and people. Not only musicians, but all people who are affected by music. Because I am constantly immersed in this subject and also create music all day long, I often have ideas that are interesting enough to write down.

Here's one different idea: "It seems that what we term as melodic ideas are actually living breathing forms of energy that we understand only as music. We interpret these vivid, highly complex energy forms with our creative minds and then use our rational thought process and various musical instruments to decode everything into structured forms of composition."

Now this statement is very raw but I have written more about it in my music journal so in future blogs I will begin to give more intricate explanations about why I believe this to be a nice image of my "creative process." For now I will just say the above statement lets me see music as something barely in my control and always floating around my inarticulate consciousness waiting for me to recognize its various elements and decode them for other humans to enjoy.

I will write much more about this in the future so keep reading!

MUSIC SIFTABLES

Hey so if you are interested in different forms of musical composition definitely check this guy out... David Merrill is from MIT and is the main creator of 'Siftaables', intelligent blocks that are aware of themselves and others. Watch the video and think about the musical applications of this invention.

http://www.ted.com/talks/view/id/457

At the end, he demonstrates a sequencer. I would love to get my hands on these and do some live performances and serious synth damage electronic composing. Or just link them up open ended to different sound samples and put them to great use!

If you want to contact David like I have, here is his personal blogger site:

http://www.ted.com/index.php/speakers/david_merrill.html

So if you ever get the chance to use these blocks be sure to let me know how I can get them! Hopefully they'll come out for commercial use and not just end up as toys in Target or something. haha

MUSIC IN CANADA

So recently I had the oppurtunity to compose music for this short film produced in Canada. This was the first film I did internationally with many more to come.

The film is titled "Playing Through" and it is about two good friends playing Golf together one day. However, there is a twist because as this story progresses you begin to realize that everything is not fine. It turns out that one of the guys is waiting for a phone call telling him if he has cancer or not and his friend is trying to help him deal with it as they play golf. So yeah nice plot for a short film and you will have to watch to see how it ends.

The music I created for this short was very quiet and melodic in most places. I wanted it to sort of gently help the characters through the story and provide a nice emotional background as they talked about the possability of cancer and how it would affect both their lives.

The film will go to festavils later this year and I look forward to seeing what will happen with it there. And btw go check out the film team that made it...they are some really creative guys and here's their website. www.17west.ca

Alright thanks for reading and I'll post soon about an exciting new project I have coming up!

Best,
Reuel

MY NEW BLOG

Hello to all my music fans, film teams, DJ's and new listeners!

I recently started this blog to keep you all updated on any recent news about me or music information that you might find interesting.
