Samba 4 & Active Directory

In a great move for Samba, a few Samba 4 devs have spent a week in Redmond at the Microsoft HQ to work with them (yes thats with them) on the interoperability of Samba and Microsofts Active Directory. This resulted in them being able to setup a Samba based Active Directory and have a Windows Server join, trust and replicate using native MS protocols. Still in early alpha stages this is a huge step for open source.

Windows 8 128Bit?

Microsoft is planning to make Windows 8 an 128-bit operating system, according to details leaked from the software giant’s Research department.

The discovery came to light after Microsoft Research employee, Robert Morgan, carelessly left details of his work on the social-networking site, LinkedIn.

Microsoft/Novell relationship ‘exceeding expectations’

“Speaking at an IP Expo seminar in London, Novell’s Microsoft alliance director Steve Harris and Microsoft’s strategic partnerships chief Michael Croney said the results of the virtualisation-centric arrangement had exceeded expectations.

“”Microsoft has sold $220m [£137m] worth of Suse Linux subscriptions for Novell,” Croney said in the seminar, referring to the element of the Microsoft-Novell pact whereby Microsoft paid Novell $240m for subscriptions it intended to resell to its customers.”

CNN using Drupal

US Cable News giant CNN have just launched their latest website into Beta, and the best thing about this is?? It uses Drupal and looks the biz!.

CNNGo is a guide to various Asian cities, 6 at the moment but more to follow. Currently featured are Shanghai, Bangkok, Singapore, Hong Kong, Mumbai and Tokyo.

Little Big Planet Motion Control

In this five minute video, Sony’s new motion control wand is used in a cooperative mode of LittleBigPlanet.

One player handles Sackboy with a Dualshock, while another manipulates objects to help him complete his tour through the level.

This video comes from Sony’s Tokyo Game Show presentation during which motion control support was revealed for LBP as well as Resident Evil 5.

The game will apparently also support, EyePet, Flower, Pain, High Velocity Bowling “and more”.

The slide at the end of the demonstration also mentions Sing and Draw, Champions of Time, Motion Party, The Shoot and Tower.

HOWTO: Suppress email output from cron jobs

Well I fired up my email this morning and in my inbox was over 1000 new messages all titled “Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender” Joy of Joys!
turns out that one of my servers can’t seem to deliver email llocally but this is another matter, all the emails were outputs from cronjobs going to root.
Quick way for me to sort that is to suppress the email output from all cronjobs on that box.
opening up my cron editor

crontab -e

and adding this onto the end of each line

>/dev/null 2>&1

this should keep cron quiet until i sort the mystery email issue.

What? I hear most of you cry? well FreePBX is the awesome web interface for managing an Asterisk based PBX. Asterisk, the open source telephone system, has masses and masses of configurable options and FreePBX makes this so much easier.

The latest Beta version of this software has just been releases with a tonne of new features, including:

Asterisk SIP Settings & Asterisk IAX Settings
Provides the ability to manage common global SIP and IAX settings that have often been confusing and error prone to do in configuration files, and includes a handy auto-configuration helper to determine your sip_nat.conf related settings (and further eliminates the need for that file).
Outbound Route Messages
Allows the ability to override the default “All Circuits Busy” message encountered when all trunks fail, and allows for explicit messages to be played for Emergency Routes.
Weak Password Checks
Provides an auditing function for all your SIP and IAX passwords to help harden your system and protect it from the many automated scripts on the internet seeking out and exploiting such systems. Because of the security implications, this module was also introduced earlier into version 2.5.
Bulk Extensions & Bulk DIDs
Allows you to manage or provision large quantities of users and DIDs from a spreadsheet format.
Custom Context & Route Permissions
Provide some advanced functionality to limit routes or other features and capabilities to different extensions.

HP to develop reservations system for American Airlines

American Airlines have said HP Co are to design a system for reservations, pricing and ticketing that could become the industry standard.

The program, named Jetstream, will come into play in the next 4 years and is set to “improve efficiency and consistency, reducing operating costs” is said to handle all aspects of the customer service – reservations, pricing and ticketing, inventory, flight information and checkin but also as officials have said “serve as the foundation to deliver innovative online and mobile travel tools.”

“This relationship pairs American, an information technology pioneer in the aviation industry, with HP, a world-renowned technology pioneer,” Arpey said. “The current Passenger Service System has served us well for many decades and remains among one of the most reliable.”
