These courageous workers have called on their communities across the country to stand with them the week of Thanksgiving, through hundreds of actions across the country, culminating in the largest action on Black Friday (Friday, Nov 28). They want to know their community supports them and their colleagues in demanding that all Walmart associates (and all workers) deserve $15 & fulltime! Big multi-national players like Monsanto, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the G8 Alliance are increasingly controlling our connection to our food. From GMO’s to the patenting of seeds, industrial farming and pro-corporate policies are making things worse for small farmers, for the hungry, consumer health, and the environment around the globe.

African farmers and activists are fighting for “food sovereignty,” the right of all people everywhere to control their food systems. On October 12th, hear first-hand from African food leaders and farmers about how corporate “philanthropy” is transforming the very face of African agriculture to a more problematic American-style agribusiness and what we can do to change it.

5-7pm Reception: Join Community Alliance for Global Justice/AGRA Watch and our guests, food sovereignty leaders from throughout Africa and the US, for a special Reception. Food and beverage complementary with purchase of ticket; beer and wine also available for sale. Entrance to Grand Hall included in price of reception. Buy tickets at the door or in advance - $15/$20/$25: http://africanagriculture.brownpapertickets.com/

7 - 9pm: Public presentation upstairs in Grand Hall. $5 suggested donation at door.

Expected African participants:

Mercia Andrews, Trust for Community Organization and Education, South Africa
Marian Bassey, Friends of the Earth-Africa, Nigeria
Fatou Batta, We Are the Solution, Burkina Faso
Million Belay, Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa and MELCA-Ethiopia

Are you interested in learning more about AGRA Watch and CAGJ's work to challenge the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for their promotion of industrial agriculture, GMO's and other unsustainable practices in Africa?

This is a great time to get involved, as we are hosting an exciting strategy retreat with our US and African partners this October! To learn more details, including who is committed to coming from Africa, see this link!

Join us to get more in depth information about our work and how you can get involved in holding the Gates Foundation to its commitments to transparency and accountability. We will share with you our understanding of how food sovereignty networks in Africa and across the US are coming together to oppose the Foundation's policies.

There are opportunities to help with:
*research
*to connect with our partners on the continent
*to organize public events when our African Partners come to the US in October, and
*to help organize protests at the foundation’s headquarters.

We hope you can join us to get involved in this important and enjoyable project! If you can’t make the event on the 4th, and would still like to know more, please let us know and we will arrange to connect with you in other ways.

TIME TO MOVE ON THE SAKUMA BOYCOTT: SEATTLE-WIDE STRATEGY SESSION WITH LAS FAMILIAS UNIDAS POR LA JUSTICIA

Sunday July 13, 4 - 6pm
New Hope Baptist Church, 116 21st Avenue, Seattle 98122

Please RSVP and let us know if your organization can co-sponsor (Co-sponsors help do outreach, and, if you are able, contribute a small amount to help cover costs of venue and snacks): Email CAGJ's Food Justice Project: fjp@seattleglobaljustice.org

Las Familias Unidas por la Justicia (FUJ) is a union of hundreds of farmworkers in Skagit County that is at the forefront of the farm worker labor movement. FUJ needs your support to help them win their campaign for fair working conditions at Sakuma Brothers Berry Farm!

Last summer, in protest of racist taunts and low wages, berry pickers at Sakuma Brothers Berry Farms formed FUJ to organize for better pay, housing and working conditions. Though Sakuma Brothers pushed hard to bust their campaign, FUJ gained significant ground. (Check out the Stranger's great coverage in the links.) They prevailed against Sakuma Brothers in numerous wage and hour violations (the largest settlement for farmworkers ever in Washington State), defeated an attempt to hire guest workers in place of the workers of FUJ, and secured a Judge's order to stop Sakuma Brothers from retaliating against striking farmworkers.

These cases are exciting developments but FUJ still has no guarantees their gains will be protected. Sakuma Brothers still refuses to bargain with the workers of FUJ. Because the farm workers are excluded from laws that protect their rights to collectively bargain, FUJ's ultimate victory depends upon community support and pressure to force Sakuma to the bargaining table. FUJ is seeking support in a boycott of Sakuma Brothers products as they prepare to secure a contract detailing better pay, housing and working conditions.

Join Community Alliance for Global Justice on July 13 at 4pm to learn more from FUJ President Ramon Torres about this group's amazing work and join in planning a Seattle-wide Sakuma Boycott. This is an important, urgent opportunity to keep the momentum in favor of improved working conditions for farm workers.

Please invite friends and members of your organizations. We want to develop a comprehensive strategy to get Sakuma's products pulled from your local grocer's shelves. Together let's stand in solidarity with the families of FUJ and the farm worker movement.

Additionally, you can support FUJ by rallying for FUJ’s one-year anniversary march on Friday, July 11 at 10am. Meet in Burlington, Washington off exit 232 on I-5. Head East and look for the banners!

TIEMPO DE AVANZAR EL BOICOT SAKUMA: SESIÓN DE ESTRATEGIA CON LAS FAMILIAS UNIDAS POR LA JUSTICIA PARA ABARCAR TODO SEATTLE

Domingo 13 de julio, 4 a 6pm

New Hope Baptist Church, 116 21st Avenue, Seattle 98122

They prevailed against Sakuma Brothers in numerous wage and hour violations (el mayor acuerdo de pago a trabajadores agrícolas en el estado de Washington), defeated an attempt to hire guest workers in place of the workers of FUJ, y secured a Judge's order to stop Sakuma Brothers from retaliating against striking farmworkers.

The farm used to be called the Atlantic City Nursery and is owned by Seattle Parks and Recreation. Seattle Tilth was granted co-operatorship of the site in 2011 along with Friends of Rainier Beach Urban Farm and Wetlands.

We will get a tour of the farm, and then help with early summer harvesting and planting, followed by discussion. Space is limited, so RSVPs are required - please email us, thanks! When we receive your RSVP, we will send you directions, more details on what to wear and bring and coordinate carpools. All activities will be appropriate for children and we can work out disability accommodations if needed.

About Teach-Outs: CAGJ’s Food Justice Project invites our members and others to learn about and build connections with key players in the local food region through monthly visits to farms, community kitchens, and community gardens! The site visits include hands-on work that is needed by or is appropriate to the sites, opportunities to debrief and reflect at the end of the site visit, and calls to action! Through these visits, CAGJ hopes to facilitate a place for the voices of our local food producers to be heard and their knowledge and skills to be recognized and celebrated.

Delve into understanding how oppression and privilege affect our food system. Through popular education and reviewing the facts, we’ll unpack how racism, classism, and sexism create an unjust food system, are ingrained in the current way we grow and eat our food, and can manifest themselves in food system “alternatives” as well.

We will be passing out flyers at the Gates Foundation’s Visitor Center Food for Good event to educate folks about the Gates Foundation’s involvement in Africa. To RSVP or for more information contact: agrawatch@seattleglobaljustice.org or 206-405-4600.

Background info:
The Gates Foundation claims to be promoting food for good (#Food4GoodSEA). We are asking the question: good for whom? (#Good4who)

In 2006, the Gates Foundation and Rockefeller Foundation launched the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA). AGRA’s primary goal is to alleviate poverty and reduce hunger in Africa through agricultural development that targets small-scale farmers. Unfortunately, the Foundation promotes industrial farming, inappropriate technologies, and pro-corporate policies that will make things worse for the hungry, for small farmers, consumer health, and the environment in Africa.

The Gates Foundation and AGRA claim to be “pro-poor” and “pro-environment,” but their approach is closely aligned with transnational corporations, such as Monsanto, and foreign policy actors like USAID. They take advantage of food and global climate crises to promote high-tech, market-based, industrial agriculture and generate profits for corporations even while degrading the environment and dis-empowering farmers.

Feeding the world and preserving the environment requires moving away from industrial agriculture and techno-fixes (like genetic engineering), and towards proven small-scale agroecological farming. A growing international movement of peasant farmers, fisherfolk, rural women, landless workers and indigenous peoples are calling for food sovereignty—the right to define their food and agriculture systems—as a solution to hunger, poverty and the climate crisis.

Come to the action on Saturday to pressure the Gates Foundation to support African-initiated programs rooted in indigenous farming practices, social equity and food sovereignty.

<gd:comments><gd:feedLink href='https://www.google.com/calendar/feeds/f0gf5dtihf0ge7jmtoqss2ap4c%40group.calendar.google.com/public/full/24u44hqopndll1f8c9di8ahk90/comments'/></gd:comments><gd:eventStatus value='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#event.confirmed'/><gd:where valueString='The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Visitor Center, 440 5th Ave N, Seattle, Washington 98109, United States'/><gd:who email='f0gf5dtihf0ge7jmtoqss2ap4c@group.calendar.google.com' rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#event.organizer' valueString='CAGJ Events'/><gd:when endTime='2014-04-05T13:00:00.000-07:00' startTime='2014-04-05T11:00:00.000-07:00'/><gd:transparency value='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#event.opaque'/><gCal:anyoneCanAddSelf value='false'/><gCal:guestsCanInviteOthers value='true'/><gCal:guestsCanModify value='false'/><gCal:guestsCanSeeGuests value='true'/><gCal:sequence value='0'/><gCal:uid value='24u44hqopndll1f8c9di8ahk90@google.com'/>

Cooking up Justice in the Food System: Central Co-op and CAGJ Celebrate Our Food, Our Right!

Cooking up Justice in the Food System: Central Co-op and CAGJ Celebrate Our Food, Our Right!

BOOK: Fresh Fruit, Broken Bodies: Migrant Farmworkers in the United States by Dr. Seth Holmes
Sponsored by Community Health International Medicine Projects for Sustainability (C.H.I.M.P.S.) and RESULTS Seattle Chapter

This book describes the everyday lives and suffering of Mexican migrants and the social forces and structures that normalize their oppression and make it appear “natural” in US society and health care. Based on 5 years of research in the field (including illegally crossing the Border, berry-picking in the Skagit County of WA state and traveling with migrants back and forth from Oaxaca up the West Coast), Holmes, an anthropologist MD shows how market forces, anti-immigrant sentiment, and racism undermine health and health care. He planted and harvested corn, picked strawberries, accompanied sick workers to clinics, participated in healing rituals, and mourned at funerals for friends. The following panel discussion promises to be both engaging and educating.

Panel for Book Club on “Fresh Fruit, Broken Bodies”: Facilitator – Dr. Joe Sherman with C.H.I.M.P.S.

International Day of Action

Join us for "No More NAFTA's - Stop the TPP" Rally, 1/31 at Westlake Center at NOON! The rally is part of an Inter-Continental Day of Action, in solidarity with our trade justice allies in Mexico, Canada and across the U.S.

Community Alliance for Global Justice grew out of the 1999 Seattle protests against the World Trade Organization, and has continued to oppose the corporate agenda of privileging its power and profits over the rights of labor, the environment, small farmers and consumers. We have had 20 years of NAFTA, with its clear and undeniable effects on jobs, food security, income inequality and environmental protection. CAGJ has worked to expose these injustices and to unite with activists everywhere to build opposition to so-called “trade” pacts.

Now our current crop of corporate-bought politicians are negotiating – in secret, of course – their newest attempt to enhance the rights of investors, the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), which would make it even harder for nations and communities to make decisions about their food, their climate, their future.

Local allies such as unions and social justice organizations, and international organizations of workers and citizens throughout the TPP area, are mobilizing to make it harder to pass this investor – rights agreement. In particular, for us here in the U.S., we have to make sure the administration’s effort to pass “fast-track” legislation, attempting to bypass any democratic citizen say on the TPP, has to be stopped.

As a start, join us for a noon rally in Westlake Park, next Friday, the 31st. We will go on from there to get fast track halted. And CAGJ will intensify its work among food justice advocates to demonstrate why deals like the TPP stand in the way of reimagining and building a fair and sustainable food system.

What: Press Conference/Action to honor Rep. McDermott’s leadership in pledging to Vote No on fast-track and to call on every member of the WA State delegation to do the same! This is an International Day of Action!

When: Friday, January 31st 12 pm

Where: Westlake Center, 400 Pine St Seattle

Who: Sierra Club, 350.org, Community Alliance for Global Justice, Plant for the Planet, Backbone Campaign, Occupy Bellingham, Spokane Move to Amend, Expose the TPP, the Washington Fair Trade Coalition & You!

RSVP & help share the word on Facebook and by forwarding widely - Thanks!

Please join us to show the Obama Administration and our Congressional Representatives that we demand an open and fair accounting of the TPP before any decision is made. We need a 21st Century trade agreement that protects worker rights and environmental laws.

Food provided!

Location: University Christian Church - where CAGJ's SLEE dinner took place in September! 4731 15th Ave NE: near the University of Washington Seattle campus.

CAGJ is kicking off 2014 with a Community Meeting to discuss and share all of our upcoming work. This year promises to be a busy year--from our ongoing work in solidarity with Sakuma Brothers farmworkers, to our struggle against the Trans Pacific Partnership, to our upcoming AGRA Watch Summit.

The Community Meeting will be an important opportunity to learn about our plans for the year and hear about opportunities to plug in through volunteering, interning, or other organizing opportunities. While we will give an overview of CAGJ's 3 main areas of organizing, we will highlight our AGRA Watch campaign's work to pressure the Gates Foundation to support agroecological farming in Africa.
