How to Kick Your “Compare and Despair” Habit

This month’s “Third Thursday” video tip is all about what I call “compare and despair” syndrome.

In the age of Facebook and an online world where we have 24-7 access to everyone else’s “highlight reel,” it’s really easy to compare ourselves to other people–and then judge ourselves about where we are based on what we see that they’re doing.

Unfortunately, we more often compare ourselves not with those less fortunate (and feel grateful for what we have), but with those we perceive as having or being more. The result? Envy, and somehow feeling “not enough.”

It’s human nature and I think it’s something we’ve all dealt with before, including myself. The key is to not let it go so far that you let it take you out of the game. I’ve done some work around this in my own life, and in the video I share some helpful things that have helped me deal.

First, comparing yourself to others is a losing game. So, why not compare yourself to yourself instead? What are you doing today that you weren’t doing last year? How have you improved?

Second, decide to embrace the success of others, feel happy for them and learn from them. (This is about flipping your envy and negative feelings on their head.)

Third, practice gratitude. Appreciating what you have will cause you to attract more.

Fourth, focus on the journey. Your path is your path, their path is their path. Our journey is ours alone, and it has to do with where WE want to go, not where anyone else is going.

Finally, redirect your attention. Stop the destructive thought in its path, get off the Internet, do something that lifts your mood, get out in nature. Wallowing further doesn’t help anyone feel better.

Your to-do? Next time you find yourself in compare and despair mode, try one of these methods and notice how it lifts you out of that state. If you keep doing this consistently, you WILL break this nasty habit.

Have These Questions About Masterminding With Me?

Q. IMPACT sounds great–but I’m not sure I could afford something like this.

A. We want what you receive out of this Mastermind program to far exceed your investment in it. And the investment for this program is in line with and very appropriate for a Mastermind of this caliber. However, we have several options for investing in this program, as ultimately we wanted to balance attracting people who are truly committed–with wanting to meet people where they are. We are very thoughtfully reviewing every application to ensure this group is as powerful and supportive as possible. Thus, we have strategically built in flexibility around pricing to make it work if possible for those who would be a sensational fit. It’s all about meeting you where you are–truly!

Q. Is this a Mastermind that meets in person several times a year? I don’t think I could swing all that travel.

A. This is something we took into careful consideration when we designed IMPACT, as we know it’s not always easy to get away, especially with family and business obligations to tend to. Because of that, IMPACT includes one in-person retreat just outside of Philadelphia mid-way through the program. The rest of the time we meet virtually by phone.

Q. Does applying for IMPACT obligate me to join?

A. Nope! There’s no obligation by applying…and it’s actually a relatively short (and fun) application, which is refreshing!

Q. What exactly happens after I apply? What are the next steps?

A. How it will work is you will get priority review of your application by both myself and my Special Program Development Consultant Mandy. Once we review your application and we feel like it’s a good fit on both sides, we’ll get on the phone with you and get to know you a bit more and answer any additional questions you might have. That’s it!

A 3-Step Process to Finding Public Speaking Gigs to Build Your Business

While I’m known for coaching entrepreneurs on how to grow a business online, I’m also fond of telling my clients and students to get out from behind the computer once in a while too!

Yes, technology can be fantastic, but it’s vitally important to connect with people face to face as well. Public speaking is a powerful way to accomplish this, and is something I did a good amount of early on in my business especially. Because of its many benefits, I continue to seek out these opportunities today, and one of the biggest questions I receive around this is about HOW to find these speaking engagements.

I consider it to be a simple 3-step process, and just by following these steps, you’ll be well on your way to an abundance of gigs.

1. Start Looking!

One big piece of advice: if you are new to speaking and/or business, don’t be too picky in the beginning. I often see people rule out lots of opportunities because they believe they won’t be able to reach their exact ideal client by speaking to that particular group. To begin gaining momentum, you HAVE to let this go. You never know who you will meet or connect with or what opportunities will come just from you getting OUT there in some shape or form.

I’ve spoken for many seemingly “random” groups and associations in my career, and have always been amazed at what comes out of it—additional ideal speaking gigs, clients, sales, word of mouth, media attention—so keep an open mind here. Some places to begin: your local Small Business Administration offices or Development Centers, local civic groups such as the Rotary, local organizations’ annual conferences, the local Chamber of Commerce, local trade organizations, national conferences, even the local library (that’s where I got started!)

2. Create Your Speaker Sheet

This is what you will share with those who have booked you to speak, and sometimes, with those who are still considering it. In its simplest form, this sheet usually has your contact information, photo, the title of your talk, and some bullets about what the audience will learn from you.

Additionally, some speakers choose to include information about books or publications they’ve been featured in, as well as testimonials or a listing of clients they’ve worked with.

3. Reach Out and Ask

Last, search Google or the association or group’s website for a contact person to call or email and inquire. It’s important at this point to simply only ask if they accept outside speakers, nothing more. Here’s an example of what I have sent in the past:

Hello, my name is Christine Gallagher. I’m an online marketing and social media expert and speaker, specializing in topics for women entrepreneurs. Do you accept outside speakers? My signature talk is called “The 6 Simple Steps to Kick Start Your Social Media Success.” If so, please let me know…

This opens up the conversation, but first you need to know if you’ve even got a shot. Don’t be discouraged at the “No’s”—keep asking, and make it a habit to reach out to new possible speaking leads consistently every month.

Also, don’t forget to “work” your connections! Many times my own speaking gigs came about because I reached out to people I knew were part of certain organizations. They were already acquaintances or colleagues of mine, and I simply let them know of my interest in presenting for their group.

Finally, there is definitely something to be said for being highly visible online. By regularly participating in social media, keeping your blog updated, sending a newsletter and posting content such as articles on the web, you increase the chances of others not only seeing you as an expert, but of reaching out to connect you to speaking gigs. In fact, I’ve secured several local speaking engagements in the past just by consistently showing up on sites like Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook, engaging with others there, and sharing information of value.

The best part of simply getting started seeking out public speaking engagements is the snowball effect. While you’ll be doing much of the pursuing in the beginning, once you start to get out there, you’ll begin getting approached with other speaking opportunities. This was certainly my experience as well, and after a while, you can decide to be a bit choosier.

The bottom line? More speaking means more clients, more customers, and more sales… so what are you waiting for?

6 Ways to NOT Reinvent the Wheel in Your Business

This month’s “Third Thursday” video tip is all about how to not reinvent the wheel in your business.

It’s too HARD to do it that way! As business owners, when things feel “too hard,” it’s almost impossible to keep a success and money mindset, we don’t keep up with the marketing, we certainly don’t feel motivated to continue taking action, and everything essentially goes to hell in a hand basket!

That’s why in this video I’m sharing with you my top 6 ways to not reinvent the wheel yourself. The best by-product of that? It frees up not only your time, but your energy and the energetic SPACE in your life to bring more of the things you do want in.

Here are the concepts I share in the video:

1) Re-purposing. (This is one of those concepts that on the surface seems so obvious and so simple but I am always amazed at how much this is overlooked.)

2) Swipe file. (AKA “model what’s working!”)

3) What’s worked before? (Rinse and repeat!)

4) Listening and paying attention. (Also very overlooked.)

5) Go back to your why. (Your purpose, your foundation, even your brand.)

6) Don’t be afraid to ask for help or get support. (You don’t have to be a lone ranger. In fact that’s the very DEFINITION of doing things the hard way.)

3 Ways a Mastermind Can Change the Course of Your Business

Napoleon Hill, who was the author of the classic book on success, Think and Grow Rich, described a Mastermind as “a coordination of knowledge and effort, in a spirit of harmony between two or more people, for the attainment of a definite purpose. This form of cooperative alliance has been the basis of nearly every great success.”

Imagine having the support of other like-minded entrepreneurs, working together to reach a common goal: to have a profitable, rewarding and FUN business that feeds your soul AND impacts the world. I’ve been a member of different masterminds for over 5 years now, and I know from personal experience that the force of this “meeting of the minds” creates is literally unstoppable. Success truly becomes inevitable when you are propelled forward this way.

Specifically, here are three reasons why:

1) We become like those we frequently associate with.

You may have heard of the quote by the personal development guru Jim Rohn that says, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” Think about it: when you spend a lot of time with people who complain, blame, criticize and generally have a very poor outlook on life, it’s very hard not to be dragged down right along with them.

3) Fast growth comes from exponential ideas, resources and perspectives.
