students. I bought them at Edible Landscaping in Virginia.

Hi James,

We’re accounting for the $16.20 in the “Additional Expenses” section of the costs in our calculations. This section is a bit of a catch-all for the fees and technical maintenance.

The NPV for the project is indeed pretty abysmal. Our goal was to show that a small business can put some major money toward a sustainable initiative without it being *purely* philanthropic

Hopefully one day it will be easier to actually make a profit-based business case for adding solar in a small business situation.

Love the idea of trees with consumable fruits… but are kiwi trees and the like native, or at least, going to fare as well as native varieties?

You’re calculations in PV Watts use 19 cents kWh, I assume that’s Duke Energy @ .04 and NC Greenpower @.15. Do you account for $16.20 Duke charges for metering and admin. on sell agreements (PP-N)? It’s difficult to monetize the tax incentives, the Fed 1603 Energy Rebate helps business, but not residential. As far as NPV, and IRR it’s difficult to make these system “pencil case”. From what I can determine a small commercial system is lucky to reach 5% IRR over a 25 year period.

I’ve been engaged in taxations for lengthier then I care to admit, both on the private side (all my employed life history!!) and from a legal standpoint since passing the bar and following tax law. I’ve put up a lot of advice and rectified a lot of wrongs, and I must say that what you’ve posted makes impeccable sense. Please continue the good work – the more individuals know the better they’ll be armed to cope with the tax man, and that’s what it’s all about.
