Fantastic article, with incredibly important content. I have been an avid consumer of gum for a long time now, but reading this made me rethink my proclivity to use it. I have been dismayed and alarmed for years at the amount of plastic we have found while traveling, it is sickening and saddening at what plastic is doing to our poor earth.

Thank you for this well written, well researched and timely article. We have always tried to be aware and careful when traveling not to pollute, but reading this has given us new ideas and an even more vigilant mindset.

Volunteering overseas gives you so much more of an experience than just travelling. It gives you the opportunity to really immerse yourself in a new culture, give something back and be part of a local community. The key is to look for organisations that offer long term volunteering placements as these are what are really going to benefit you and also the community in which you volunteer in, the most. Look for charities that offer you the chance to really do something inspirational, on placements that really need your help and are worthwhile and sustainable.

there are many conservation efforts geared towards the Galapagos Islands, unfortunately the distribution of positive news like the efforts of Ecoventura go under the radar. An official distribution channel solely for the Galapagos would help I believe.

Dear,

My name is Jorijn, student bachelor Tourism in Belgium.

I'm almost graduated, the only thing left is writing my thesis.

My thesis is about sustainable acitivities you can do while travelling.

My question to you is;

Does you organisation have some criteria to describe what makes an activity sustainable?

For example;

For us, an e.g. when there's no impact on the nature and environmentactivity on a trip is sustainable when...

- (example: when there's no impact on the nature and environment)

-

-

OR an activity on a trip is not sustainable when...

-

-

-

I hope you can help me with this question.

Thank you!

Kind regards,

Jorijn Battiau

Student Tourism and leisuremanagement at Howest, Kortrijk, Belgium.

I can't think of any other reasons to help the Galapagos Islands other than increase donation funds for the Galapagos Conservation Trust and possibly limiting the numbers of tourists that visit. Has anyone got any other ideas?? :) thanks for your help!

I lived and worked at Maho bay for a number of years. Even some of the pic's used on this page of cabins/tents I helped build or rebuild after Hugo made a mess of things.Sure would be a great loss to everyone to see Maho pass. I remember Stanley Selengut well he invited me back to Maho after being there for hugo and it was there I met my now wife.I could go on and on with stories but anyone that has ever been there will never forget.
