Me and my friend Sue used to bunk off from our posh school in South Croydon in 1960 or thereabouts when we must have been 15. In the afternoons, the beautiful, sexy Italian waiters from The Savoy Hotel were off duty until the evening and, as you say, Pepsi Cola and a good juke box, some sweaty, shadowy jiving and, best of all, what would now be called snogging but then was known as heavy petting were never-to-be-bettered experiences in teen love. We said goodbye at 5ish and got the train home from Victoria. Yearning. Only the lonely ... Wonderful to see mention of this lovely old basement dump. Sorry youre not well Chris- speedy recovery wishes to you.... I've always considered him to be one of the best vocalists I've ever heard and as Bob's earlier post mentions, his contribution to Savoy Brown's output (both singing and songwriting) remains amongst my favourite music to this day. Brian Matthew played "Train to Nowhere" on his "Sounds of the 60's" radio show on Saturday morning and it still sounds as haunting now some 40 odd years after I first heard it.
