Very true, Sam. Better yet; instead of taking the lump sum and chopping it up across decades; there's a magic limit somewhere in the vicinity of $400,000 to $500,000 where your money, carefully invested, can actually be all you need to live comfortably (as in your "upper-middle class" example) just by benefiting from the interest. Index funds, for example can have a return of 10 to 20 per cent a year.

If you know when your own biology tells you that you're most fit to work, see if it isn't possible to do your most demanding and complicated work at that time. I know that it may be difficult to rearrange your schedule at work, but maybe there are some things that you can change?

Also, the value of a good night's sleep should never be underestimated if you're not feeling energetic enough during the days.

I agree with that winning the lottery doesn't keep you rich. It makes you rich for a short period, and I don't care how much you win, if it's in a lump-sum, then you're going to get a bunch of really, REALLY distant relatives show up at your door asking for handouts or "investment capital" for this or that. I'd rather take that lump-sum, chop it up across 3-5 decades, and actually remain rich, and by rich, I mean an upper-middle class income. I would still love to continue my 9-5 life because my 5-9 life is way too demanding! It's nice to go to the office and earn an honest dollar, plus it's great excuse to not be at home!

As for the cans of coke........you get refunded on recycling! The book's value is in its content. If you've re-read it, then you know it well, and can apply the knowledge you've gained from it so it can fit in some context of problem solving in the future. We learn from our own mistakes, but books teach us to learn from others.

I agree with what you are saying here. In particular, I agree that these 5 points you make are anything but simple and easy. For example, fear of failure is very real for many people. But I do agree with your train of thought.

I would like to think I can combat using those good methods. I seem to have become so tired when working, that it is very difficult to get back to work. I am currently looking at "motivation while tired" blogs because I feel truly too tired to work. I have been working on a 2 hour task through some of the night and half of one day. With big breaks in between. I dont seem to become fired-up to work until about 6pm.

I like this quote from Steve Jobs very much: <a href="http://ifyousayso.info/2009/09/steve-jobs-about-innovation-leaders-and-followers/" rel="nofollow">"Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower."</a> It reveals much about, how he thinks and acts.

In other news, Accelerando was one hell of a book. Reading all the other Stross books now and just finished Halting State.

Ah! You source-sniffed me you scoundrel! =D I am ashamed I did not know about the 'working prototype' thing in Sweden. I think I'll have to spawn a thread to do research for me about the different patentlaws in different countries.

Sounds like <i>somebody</i> has read Accelerando by Charles Stross? ;-)

But yeah, over time that's somewhat what I'm hoping to be able to do. With Swedish patent laws being the way they are (last I checked), I need a 'working prototype' to patent something; I can't just patent an idea that I had to make sure that nobody else steals it. Still, it's something that I hope to be able to do in the future, but who knows in what way the intellectual property rules and regulations change over the next couple of years.

No. What you should do, is to patent each and every idea you come up with, and then sign over the patent rights to some "freedom of intellectual property"-group which will allow anyone to use that patented idea for free, forever. =)
Thus preventing EvilCorp from ever hogging that idea. Kind of using the system to beat the system.

(...the problem is patenting stuff is expensive. But maybe you could get the freedom-group to pay it for you? If you get a good reputation, that might be possible.)
