Also, I do think the choice of vessels used to distribute the sacrament is an important one symbolically, though it by no means changes anything about the real presence of Christ in the sacrament. If we used a plastic Big Gulp cup from a convenience store as a chalice, that would send the wrong message, big time.

Analogy: in your home you might buy (or inherit) fine china to be used on special occasions. The use of the good china sends a message about the kind of meal it is. To set a table with the family china and then serve the wine in disposable plastic cups would be a little strange: not wrong, necessarily, but certainly not right!

I don't think the use of individual cups is irreverent, but the use of the chalice is more reverent. Offering a choice of the two is a fine solution, in my opinion, if it encourages more members to come to the rail more often. The regular attendance of Christians to the Supper really is the point, I think we would all agree.

I wonder if pastors and others who commune regularly are not actually healthier than the population-at-large. This would be fascinating if it could be studied. After all, St. Paul writes of communion as literal medicine that can heal or kill if taken improperly. We modern people scoff at the idea that mere bread and wine might deliver tangible, temporal health benefits, but can anyone say with certainty that it doesn't?

Deaconess Reher,
Thanks for the comment. Our congregation has gluten-free wafers for those who have the need you address. When necessary, we do make whatever accommodations we can. My purpose was simply to point out that the fear of contracting an infectious disease from the chalice is way over blown. I'm glad you brought this important health issue to light.

I know this is not exactly the point of your article, but I would like to point out that there are some people who cannot take the Common Cup- not because they are afraid of germs, but because they have a medically proven disease like Celiacs Disease. This is an immuno- reaction to wheat (and more). There are different levels of sensitivity as well. However there are some who if they were to injest even a backwashed crumb they could get debilitatingly sick and some can end up hospitalized. I'm sure, that if given the choice, many would desire the chalice, as this is just one more thing that sets Celiacs apart from everyone else- in addition to having to receive a special gluten free wafer. It may be, as commented above, the perfect body and blood of our Lord and Savior, but I can tell you from personal experience that this sinful body cannot handle even a crumb of a regular wafer without getting sick. I shall have to wait until I'm in heaven to have my perfect, sinless, and whole body again.

Don't forget the aspect that Christ is the Great Physician and perfect, sinless. His body and blood are by nature sin-free. In fact, he takes everyone's sins with him to the cross today. Therefore, the communion chalice contains His perfect body and blood, which is medicine for our body and souls. He heals us sick from our sin.

Well God is there with us.....there is nothing else to want. I am such a weak and pitiful sinner, that I need to refill my cup as oft as I can. That is what I tell my Grandchildren. We have to go to church so God refill our cups for the week. Love your post! Guilty of all that! I didn't know you were looking. Great service tonight by the way!
