That is so true Duane As an author and business man, I can relate to how you said "All scuba instructors should determine what their prices should be, even if they work for a dive store ". I hope more people discover your blog because you really know what you're talking about. Can't wait to read more from you!

I personally think you handled the situation well and the guy was a little bit on the greedy side taking such a huge margin just as a finders fee.

For new instructors, I'm not sure I completely agree that they need to figure out their minimum fee and if a dive shop won't pay it, they don't teach. If a new instructor has a good opportunity to get in to a dive shop, an offer of $50 per student may seem low, but typically a dive shop has an easier time pulling in business so that new instructor can easily build their business thanks to the dive center. You know I don't believe dive instructors should work for free, but I think there is some room for a little teeth cutting when starting out.

Yes I did but that is low hanging fruit.

I don't really think this is a scam as you point it. Just another instructor seeing if you are stupid enough to fall for it. As you point out, you didn't.

I realize you think this sort of behavior is "preying" on new scuba instructors. However, if an agency allows someone to safegard someone's life while they are in the instructors care in a scuba class context, shouldn't the instructor be allowed the same lattitude in figuring out if this is a good financial decision for them? I would think if someone is part of a "professional" association of diving instructors, they would have the brains to know when they were being taken advantage of. (But then again, based on some of the instructors I have seen in my day, that is a pretty big leap)

This sort of stuff goes on all the time though. I had all sorts of crazy requests in the past. My favorite was a guy who wanted to put me on surface supply so I could hoop net lobsters in San Diego and Mission Bay. He would pay me $10 per 10 lobsters I caught. (Note that this is all highly illegal. Diving in the bay is illegal. Diving without a commercial permit is illegal. Taking over the limit is illegal. Hoop nettting lobsters while on Scuba is illegal)

I told him absolutely I would do it.

He told me to meet him at the dock at 9pm because that is "when the lobsters are all out".

I then called California Dept of Fish and Game instead of showing up.

Apparently they met him at the dock and he had to explain his plan to them.

70/30 is a decent split if the 70 is going to the instructor teaching the class.

You didn't catch my sarcasm? :)
