Hi,
Could someone explain to me how blippy or mint get the purchasing data? Are they working together with the credit card company or bank issuer?
Please, this doubt is eating my brain away.
Thanks

Dave is right but neither he nor Holvi should muddy the waters when comparing banks with payment gateways.

A bank is mainly geared towards long-term investments, and long-life relationships direct to consumers and businesses. Payment gateways are primarily focussed with performing transactions for relatively small fees and as such have long-term relationships with businesses but short-term relationships with consumers.

But I completely agree that banks should be rethinking their relations with their customers as long-term income streams and appreciate that people are more willing to move their own commitments into a variety of banks and have no need for the loyalties the banks used to depend on.

Holvi is correct. The best option for the US is to move toward a similar regulatory framework, where companies can obtain licences to run payments-centric "near banks" without needing banking licences or banking regulation.

Erin - thank you for the great recap for Finovate presentations! It helps us as we build on our partner outreach! One quick note - in your TASCET recap you have: "Tascet accesses transactional and account data from state gov, FIs, healthcare, etc."

We don't access data -- ever. We are about giving privacy back to the consumer. The point I think you were making are the markets we serve (financial, healthcare, government, academic, cyber).

Thanks!

Ditto to the kudos above. I couldn't attend this one and you provided the goto-coverage for the quick thumbnail sketch on each. The combination of this and the #Finovate tweet stream was the next best thing to being there.

Cheers,
Bill

Jim, thanks for the effusive praise! You and Eric deserve the complements for putting on a great show each and every time.

Rest? That would imply my consulting client projects somehow paused while I attended conferences?! Hah.

See you soon (in Singapore?!) and thanks again!

Wow Erin, I am amazed, impressed, and not more than a little jealous, of how prolific and insightful your coverage of Finovate was. Wow, I hope you've gotten some rest after that. And it was great seeing you and we really appreciate you creating the definitive record of the event! I hope we cross paths again very soon. -- Jim (from Finovate)

Amazon's payment business, delightfully called Amazon Payments, is part of the Amazon Web Services (AWS) business group. Amazon reported just over $48 billion in net sales for 2011, but actually enables much more payment volume than that number would indicate. The $48 billion is $42 billion of product revenue (goods sold directly by Amazon) and $6 billion of service revenue (to facilitate third party sales, AWS services, etc.)

Because the $42 billion of product revenue only represented 64% of all goods, its reasonable to think that the other 36% represented another $24 billion of purchase volume that is handled by Amazon Payments, but not claimed as Amazon revenue. This $75 billion in on-Amazon purchase volume still doesn't include off-Amazon sales enabled by the use of Amazon Payments on third-party merchant sites.

Amazon doesn't break out is payment business metrics like PayPal does, but does have a pricing structure that pretty much matches PayPal's. And it now reports 164 million active buyers and 2 million active sellers. So you're right. Amazon has some big numbers.
