A good thing for all musicians to know.

I think an invoice would work great as another means of reinforcing a contract. Having the two go hand in hand would really secure the deal and keep everyone on the same page.

The bio and skill set graphs are great ideas, not just in terms of convenience for the employer, but also because they make the resume look more visually interesting.

I really like the idea of a graph inserted in the resume. It is refreshing to see a creative way to present one's information. Do you recommend inserting work experience from out of the music realm in one's resume when applying for a music position?

Hi

I have found that a good job for a musician is to be a teaching assistant. The hours are normally from 9 am to 3 pm, and you can often get part time work. Some schools give you free lunch too. But, reflecting on earlier blog posts, it's all about how much risk you are prepared to take. In order to have time to practice, promote yourself etc, it's hard to hold down a 9-5 monday to friday job.

Hey Matt, thanks for sharing your experiences.

What confuses me is what you say about preparing CD's or MP3's of the songs. Do we have to legally purchase the same set of MP3's, or is it OK that we receive a copy of them from someone else? I guess if it's only the artist's own songs that we're playing it would be fine, but what if we play as a sideman to a cover band that needs additional players or substitutes?

This has been bugging me for a bit because I usually just receive copies, but at the same time I'm thinking the ethical complications of this. I usually delete the entire folder containing the MP'3 after the show, just to clear my conscience.

Your reply much appreciated,

Matt, Thanks for a great article! Preparedness is the key. I do a lot of the same when preparing for show or gig. Having the set-up and instruments ready will help your focus on playing. I read once that Chuck Norris would always try to visualize every match fought so as to be a prepared as possible for the actual match.

thanks for that cameron, thats something that i shall look into,i know we did not sign any paperwork giving the musical director any specific rights to use our recordings and as far as i am aware we did not sign any contracts regarding any limitations of use, however the group paid for the studio time so i suppose they may be classed as owning the master recording they are however still using my tracks on their site so i suppose i may have a comeback, but as you say i may be limited in the ways that i use them,im hoping on the basis that i am not profiting from them i may be ok ,i do appreciate your advice ! if you think of anything else give me a shout ,,,thanks my friend .dave
