All good ideas! When I introduce this to my students, I have them hold out their hands - palms up. I put a heavy paperweight in the melody hand and one of those hollow plastic Easter eggs in the harmony hand. While they hold those, we talk about bringing out the melody and using our "heavy arm weight" into their fingertips and letting the other hand feel "empty" - like the light egg. Then I switch the objects to demonstrate switching the weight when the melody goes to the other hand.

Teaching pianists to play "off page" making their own music is what I do every day in my studio, with my books, and in my camps/workshops. I have seen many average students advance from being fearful of playing by ear to being called "creative geniuses" by their "slave to the page" peers. Like me, they just shrug and say thanks realizing that the envious ones don't get it since they are inhibited by the myth that playing creatively is a special gift only given to a few. Anyone that can play an instrument, can learn to improvise. It's not that big of a mystery. Like any other aspect of making music, playing creatively involves acquiring knowledge, practice and persistence. People who are good at it, work at it.

Have you tried Finale PrintMusic or Songwriter? I'm not sure my notation needs justify spending all the money on a full version of Finale and wondered if you had any thoughts on the less expensive versions.
