Nice, testing and experiencing your design on other devices is definitely way to go *thumbsup*.

You are also right about typography on a PC being a drag. Some while ago I read that Firefox was planning on forcing ClearType AA in the next versions similar to IE, but can't recall any source now though :/.

I worked on high res monitors before, but so far haven’t notice the shift problems. That’s perhaps because I don’t usually maximize browser windows on large displays.

Also, we have a couple of standard monitors/consumer grade systems around (iMac G4, 17" eMac), so I usually check everything on other screens, too.

But I’m still often surprised how terrible fonts look on PCs without anti-aliasing.

Thanks for the great article Marko. I had similar problems with my HP LP2475w where the default settings resulted in greenish shades of gray and overly saturated reds and greens. I solved the problem by manually calibrated the display using apple's default software, but reading your article definitely makes me want to look more into further tweaking gamma settings ...
-
By the way, doing web design on larger screens can be extremely tricky due to "optical illusion" which comes from smaller natural pixel size. In other words something that is 600px wide on your common display will physically look almost half smaller on your 27" display. While working on a 30" HP display for my previous employer, I had great troubles adjusting my perception of the web which was based on common displays. But the hardest part came with accepting design decisions which would affect user's experience, without being able to relate to what regular user's experience is myself.

If you want great tool for prototyping and slicing, I recommend StaticMatic http://staticmatic.rubyforge.org/

It allows usage of HAML and SASS, and easily compiles everything to static HTML. Only problem is that it is written in Ruby, not in PHP

It gets even more interesting choosing a typeface when you are limited by the client's visual identity and it's typographic environment rules. Sometimes you get lucky and the typeface is actually (legally) available as a webfont, otherwise you usually spend hours hunting down a typeface with similar characteristics often ending up deciding between ignoring visual identity manual by using different but quality typeface or trying to blindly follow the rules by using the similar font of poor quality.

@Nick: Practical usage would be manipulation with JavaScript, for instance thumbnail cropping or resampling. In that case, you’d rescale the original image for the previewing purpose, before submitting it to web server.

Having stumbled across websites that take 5 minutes to load on a fast connection due the six 12 MB .BMP files being used for the 50px by 50px footer icons, I can assure you, the "fix" to nasty looking HTML resized images has more to do with Photoshop and nothing to do with CSS.
