B OF A FOUNDER SPEAKS FROM THE DEAD
Bank Of America founder A.P. Gianini spoke to me from the "beyond." Oh yeah, why me ?
Gianini recalls me as a cute lil baby, so maybe thats a factor. He also trusted my dad and confided in him. Dad's dream was to be an economics professor, but WWII put him into uniform as a "spy" then as an economic Intel Analyst.
Back from a secret mission in Asia, he was sent to Princeton University to research a sort of "Marshall Plan" to rebuild China's postwar agricultural economy, When the war ended, though, he didnt want to take cute lil me and mommy to war devastated China.
So he resigned and naievely walked into the Bank Of America Headquarters in San Francisco. The secretary was startled that a newly returned veteran would just walk in for an appointment with the "boss", and Gianini wanted to honor those who served, so he shook his hand and quickly asked to see a resume.
All the boss said was "We need a young man like you. When can you start ?"
"Tomorrow" startled daddy chirped, "Where will I be assigned?" He just pointed to the desk next to his, because A.P. wanted to plan for the postwar changes in California agribusiness.
Every Christmas the boss gave dad an executive "bonus": A bottle of California wine, which they felt would soon become a booming industry, one their low rate loans would expand. Later he and top executives yearly got some stock after Gianini died.
After dad and a few of his buddies launched the first Bank Of America Credit Card, the first in the state over 50 years ago, he got a few more stocks as a "bonus." As a top officer he earned about $30,000 a year choosing which business firms got low rate loans and customers paid a tiny fraction of interest on their cards, no "fees" or "penalties." He loved his bank, and his clients adored him and the bank.
My father was very frugal, and admired how frugal Gianini was in his personal life. When the boss' only child graduated from high school, he wanted her to receive a generous gift. So he asked my dad to help her pick out a new car and assign her a low interest loan, with payments she could make monthly from her modest job.
Today, in his present incarnation, Gianini is a thrifty middle aged health care provider working with the poor in a foreign country. He appeared to me in a dream, with an eight year old boy (formerly my beloved daddy), and he was trying to stay calm as he spoke about B of A's last quarter earnings, the 130 bail out from the government, and how deceptive bank policies these past years helped pay insane "bonuses" and undeserved salaries for greedy B of A excecutives who spent the last decade destroying what was left of the financial institution he founded.
The boss, his daughter and daddy no longer had their credit cards, among the first ten issued. So I told them i'd get rid of mine too, and went to my local brach manager and spoke out why I canceled the card, which fraudulently charged me hidden fees. Gianini's daughter also has spoken out vehemently on this.To honor her dad, she didnt swear or rant, and I tried to be just as pleasant.
In the Sixties my dad was proud to see my work on the front page of the Los Angeles Free Press, and could care less that I only got $25 per submission. He mostly cared about the quality of work he was doing at the bank, and I was doing as a regular contributor to the Underground Press Syndicate. Our family life was blessed, and we loved the work we did back then, and we pray that readers of this paper find work that they too love.

Before you castigate the lack of inheritance tax and try and redistribute wealth through Government interference, in it's usual inefficient and biased manner. Look at the Charitable contributions voluntarily given by the great Philanthropists and through Trusts established on their death.

These gifts to the needy, find their way usually 94% after expenses, whereas Government delivery usually results in less then 20% of the fund actually reaching the poor, sick or deprived. That of course does not consider the diversion of funds to 'politically attractive' expenditure.

Private charitable funding does far more for the needy, then any Government sponsored program, without it the Society we have, would be impoverished to a far greater extent.

My own personal experience of 25 years within the British health care system, confirmed that without private contributions, the NHS would have been either antiquated or impoverished a decade ago. Legacies being a major income.

Beware the killing of the Golden Goose!

It is called ETHOS and you should certainly give it a push in your magazine. There is a trailer at the website. www.mediaforaction.org

Richard, there is a segment of independent professionals who have been paving the way for the gig economy. They already work independently, for top brands and companies like Google, McKinsey, American Express, Coca-Cola, and advances in SaaS technology are making it easier and easier for them to work with clients across the country instead of just across town. They are not in between jobs, they've embraced freelancing as a professional path.

Solvate is a NY-based startup that makes this kind of talent available, on demand, to work with small businesses.

So on the question of what businesses can be enriched by the new gig economy, I'd point to the growing segment of small businesses - the F5000000 as they are being called - who will benefit from access to on demand talent that they simply cannot afford to hire in the full time paradigm.
