Lots of Jewish athlete news on that Milwaukee Journal front sports page:

*Moe Berg had one hit and two passed balls in the Yankees-Senators game.

*Andy Cohen of the Minneapolis Millers was third in the American Association in batting average at .395.

*Light heavyweight boxing champion Slapsy Maxie Rosenbloom fought to a draw in a non-title bout.

*Bucketts Goldenberg of the Green Bay Packers was added to a five-bout pro wrestling card.

Keep your eye on the Pawtucket Red Sox for the next couple of days.

With catcher Ryan Lavarnway back on the PawSox’s roster and pitcher Craig Breslow on a rehab assignment, we could see the first All-Jewish battery of Yale graduates who previously played in the majors.

About 10 years ago, the valedictorian and salutatorian at Christian Brothers Academy in New Jersey were both Jewish.

Catholic schools are known for recruiting athletes away from public schools and offering scholarships. There are advantages to athletes at non-public schools. Several years ago, there were two Jewish gymnasts at Allentown (Pa.) Central Catholic who were able to leave early to work out with their club team (Parkettes). They would not have been eligible for early dismissal if they attended a public school.

Maybe they’re just making an updated version of “School Ties.”

Pacific sent a sample pack of its 1989 Legends series to the sports department of the newspaper I worked for. There were 10 cards in the pack, 110 cards in that set.

Hank Greenberg and Ken Holtzman were the only two MOTs in the series, and they both were in the pack (Joel Horlen converted after his playing days). That’s also when I decided to start collecting cards of Jewish athletes.

My favorite Field of Dreams error: A young Archie Graham looks at the players and points out three of them, including Gil Hodges. A young Graham from the 1920s would have no idea who Hodges was.

Also, there’s one old player wearing a Philadelphia Athletics uniform with Kansas City A’s colors.

That’s always going to be the case for some small people (movies, banking, etc.). But I think the overall theme is the love Jews have foe the game. If other ethnicities can express that, why shouldn’t the Jews?

That may be so, but the rule of thumb, according to the Jewish Sports Review is that the person has to identify as Jewish and according to all reports, Goldschmidt does not.
