Lovely to know an artist lives there now Annie and that you renovated it from the somewhat modest condition it was in a decade earlier when my husband and I were considering buying it from a charming couple who lived there and who presumably installed the big picture window and balustrade on the side. Having been one half of a cafe and shop, there wasn’t much to it downstairs and was rather a tight fit upstairs with having to accommodate a bathroom. I wondered why the road has such a prosaic name for a seaside location. Lovely to learn its history from all the informative comments. And what a lovely old cinema Hoylake had. Great pity it couldn’t have been saved despite all the effort and the dream of community management like Woolton Picture House and Crosby Plaza. Best wishes, Linda

So where was the Stanley Hotel?
I would have been about 12 when my family stayed there in about 1953 while waiting to move into a new house after moving from Somerset.
Im sure it was on the King’s Gap roundabout.
I remember biking to the golf club aged about 12 with a mate to plod around after the golfers in pouring iat the Open around that time.
Also staying at the Stanley just across the corridor was Juan Peron’s right hand man.

Hi Syd,
I have recently come across this site and have spent many hours going through the articles.
You may remember me from way back .I lived at 20, Shaw St, opposite Whiteley's chip shop, then moved to Groveland Ave. Renwick Black lived in Trinity road, a few gardens u from Shaw St.
If you have any info on the Dodds Thomas, b 1857 Coxswain and Arthur his son b 1888 also coxswain of the Lifeboat I would dearly like to have any info.
If I remember you lived opposite Brosters Bakery.

Regards

I am attempting to complete my family tree. My forefathers were in the Dodd family, who were 'fishers' My Grandmother was Martha Amy Dodd b. 1885, who had a brother Arthur Tom Dodd b. 1888. My Grandmother lived at 1, Groveland Avenue and Arthur lived on Grove Road, halfway down on the seaward side of the road.
Their father was Thomas Dodd who I believe was born around 1857 who married
Mary Jane Sherlock b 1852..
Both Thomas and Arthur were Coxswains of the lifeboat during their lifetime. However, confusion arises as their are also three other Thomas Dodds born within 4 years of what I assume to be my Great Great Grandfather dob.
Can anyone resolve this date problem for me.
Can anyone throw light on a Harold Dodd who lived in Waverley Road and I believe was the Pro' at Royal Liverpool G>C around the 1920's / 30's
Also, if I remember correctly did Syd Bird live in Walker St opposite Brosters.
I left Hoylake in 1966 and now live in St Andrews Fife, but do occasionally visit 'home' from time to time and would love to speak or meet up with anyone who remembers me

Hello Sheila, or should I say “ Aunty Sheila “
I am Barry, son of Doris & Bill. So you are in Australia I believe. I hope you are keeping well. I often see Steve sound in his van although haven’t seen John for quite some time.. Last time I met Paul was at Mums funeral & he said he was in Manchester. I mostly see Peter & Suzanne ( Fred’s family )for coffee now and then. Do you ever visit Uk ? I have quite a few old photos of vintage Hoylake which I believe you are on a few of them on beach.
Best regards.
