If you want funky baby patterns, there is a book called Knitted Nursery that has very unusual quirky stuff in it. I am currenly making a foam cosmic cube thingy, with little aliens poking out of the top! Love the podcast…keep up the good work! Db

You’re right about a full sweater (jumper) being too hot for indoors. These short-sleeved jumpers are a great solution. Of course, you have to make the one you like, but I’m leaning toward the tunic with the soft cables. It makes more of a statement, to me anyway. Enjoy choosing—they’re both lovely.

Can you tell me again who makes the tea cozies? I was spinning while listening and did not write down the name. Thanks! Oh-love the crimes against knitting. There are so many out there right now since everyone thinks he/she is a designer. And jelly is actually jam without the fruit bits. You cook the fruit to juice, strain out the fruit mash, add pectin, and voila! jelly. You were thinking of jello, a gelatin mess that one makes with molds. I actually use last bits of jelly to make cookies like the ones in the article. Not necessarily peanut butter, but I might try their recipe. It’s a great way to use up old and stale jelly that is languishing in the bottom of the jar.

Crimes against knitting must become a regular feature! Someone HAS to be bold and tell the truth. Imagine some poor souls really going outside of the home in any of these things! I picture the Sheep as a sort of knitting superhero, the woolly crusader against bad knitting. Truly, it’s a public service.

Loving the show, Sheepy! They’re great podcasts for the walk into work and I’ve found all sorts of things via the mentions on them too.

I just wanted to comment about the curse of the boyf/girlf knitting. I’ve not ventured into this yet, but used to do a lot of sewing and you could guarentee that once I’d made current beau a glorious Christmas stocking, they’d be off the Xmas card list for the following year. The natural and navy linen one I made for a Scottish chap with a Saltaire on the cuff was one I’m very bitter about…

After reading about Scarlett Thomas in this post a few weeks ago I was very interested in her and checked out her website. I decided to order “The End of Mr. Y” a few days later. During the second half I used every spare minute reading it and finished yesterday. I loved it, but I’m not yet sure what to think about the ending. LOL Today I ordered “PopCo” and will pick it up at the book shop tomorrow. Can’t wait. So, thank for the tip!

Loved this episode with The Bronte Sisters becoming the icing on the pod-cake! Say, I have an idea: I don’t fight with those pesky paper-bound books too long before I start checking how much margin room there is. Then I go to the local print shop with it and have the whole thing trimmed and spiral bound so it will lay down flat. I think the newbie knitter would be a lot happier with that solution, as well as the reviewing podcast host!

Regarding your request for travel knitting.
What if you were to search Ravelry for wee free patterns for bike-helmet ear muffs (or just an ear-warming headband), an ankle band for your pants or over-your-pantleg leg warmers, fingerless mitts, a neck warmer and various other little bits that could be useful when biking to/from work in the early/late cool hours? You could make them as a set out of one type of yarn, and then you’d have a nice set of biking equipment, but as each piece would be simple and quick, it would make good travel knitting.

Hi Ursa – sorry new comments are automatically held for admin approval to avoid spam.
Looks like there are several online retailers for Ethical Twist if you try Google.

wwwknitstation.com stocks it and seems to ship overseas (although they call it ‘ladies yarn’ which I don’t understand – since when does yarn come with a gender specification?!) Be aware there seems to be quite a price difference between sites (£8.50 versus £5.80) so might be worth shopping around and checking shipping costs too. Not sure if there are stockists outside the UK though. Hope that helps!

i checked out the Ethical Twist site – they have no “where to buy” info, sadly, so i don’t know where to buy! and their “contact us” form doesn’t submit. dang. does this mean i’ll have to phone overseas just to ask them where i can purchase their yarn?

do you or anyone know where i can find this yarn?

LauraSue – it’s a fair point, though I don’t intend to be dismissive of grannies and I have no problem with growing older, or older women. Rather I’m frustrated at being labeled something I’m not (and ‘grannies’ often being used by non-knitters as a lazy shorthand for something perceived as old-fashioned, not just the knitter’s age, so my use of it is usually in that context). I did try to address the other side of this in an early episode (no.4) where I acknowledged and celebrated my own grandmothers and ‘grannies’ in general.

It’s hard to cover everything in a brief typed comment, but essentially I am a slightly younger knitter, compared to some, and that perspective is part of the show and my reasons for doing the show in the first place. I can’t represent every knitter of every age/gender/background out there, or single-handedly redress the imbalances of public perceptions of craft and older women. I’m only one person, speaking from a specific viewpoint. But I agree it’s an important area and, as you say, a problem that has a much wider presence across our society in general.

I am a loyal (if a bit behind) listener, but new to your blog. I feel your pain about this article, no matter that it’s printed in a “rag,” as we say across the pond. However, one thing I’ve noticed over the span of time that I have been listening is that while you are passionate about raising the bar for knitters in terms of how we’re perceived by the public, at the same time you are very dismissive of “grannies,” as in, you don’t want to be perceived as one. While much of the dismissal of knitters comes from blatant, patronizing sexism and degradation of craft in the modern world, one must also be very careful that ageism doesn’t casually creep in as well. If women are continually insulted whatever pursuits they follow, at least if they’re young they get an article, no matter how bad. Once middle aged you will find that women are made invisible. No notice is taken of them at all. We become non-persons. If seen, it is primarily in the context of, “I don’t want to be perceived of as old.” A shame, since at middle age I am finding that I am finally coming into myself as a person. What would really create change in the world would be if women would stand together–young with old and vice versa. Now that would be power.

Please don’t misunderstand. I love your work and I will continue to listen, but I have long wanted to “talk” to you about this. The dialog would be good for all of us–women of all ages.

I can imagine your anger and frustration, but, remember this is the Daily Fail (as is was to aptly labelled by Annie above).

It is read by those who have staff, don’t know how to iron and probably think knitting is done by little old ladies for that lovely Liberty shop (aah Libertys – sigh) on Regent Street.’

If you have ever read Christopher Fowler’s ‘Bryant and May’ detective books (DO, as they are great fun, full of mad stuff, history of London, and two crabby detectives!) ‘Seventy Seven Clocks’ nails the type down to perfection in the Whitstable family.

The Daily Fail has an agenda – the real world doesn’t fit into this agenda. I think we should all pick up our needles, yarn and project bags and go play somewhere else…..

I feel your frustration. Last week I read an article about the gold medal winner in the biathlon (sorry can’t find the link). It made a big point of Neuner being a knitter and an even bigger point of how odd that was.

Why does knitting make cool people seem less so? Why do people think it’s just fad and fluff? Infuriating!

I face this attitude everyday as a designer. No non-knitter can fathom my choice of employment or how anyone could be successful at it. Mostly I get indulgent smiles and the clear message that they think I’m a bored housewife looking for something to fill my time. Basically, little verbal pats to head.

Some days it’s all I can do not to whip my knitting out of my bag and go ninja on them.

nice socks! despite the forbidding (to many) nature of grafting, it is one of the finest parts of a hand knit sock–smooth, seamless, stretchy, cuddly. lately i’ve become enamored of toe up (turkish cast on, magic loop, fleegle heel) which are likewise seamless and lovely…enjoy your podcast IMMENSELY! keep it coming!

Ceci – Jumper is pretty much the same as sweater, but it is different from a cardigan. A jumper is usually knitted, usually with long sleeves, hood optional, but without an opening at the front. But if you say sweater everyone here would still know what you meant. When I say sweater I interchange it with jumper, but not cardigan. Hope that makes sense!

I would actually like a clarification of some terms. I think Jumper and pull-over are synonomous. Is that correct? Would you call a cardigan a “jumper?” Sweater is a general term in America for a knitted pull-over or cardigan; short or long sleeved. Is jumper that generic a term as well? And when you use the term “sweater” do you use it in the way I mentioned above?

I enjoyed listening to your chat with your brother. His adventures sound exciting. I’ll check back later to see the pictures.

What a brilliant podcast! Loved hearing your ‘little brother’ talking about his motor cycle adventures… thankfully, he returned in one piece to tell the tale.
Great to have his perspective on men’s knits.

BTW, I remember the knitted toilet seat cover was popular in the 1950s, before central heating in the bathroom, also matching knitted cover to disguise spare toilet roll!

Actually those hoodies you were talking about are often called hooded sweatshirts. If a hooded sweatshirt opens down the front with the use of a zipper, it’s a zippered hooded sweatshirt.

My qualifications for answering are not due to my able use of knitting needles, but due to those three teenaged and young adult sons of mine and the daughter whose hooded sweatshirts are usually called “hoodies”. If I tried to call those guys’ shirts “hoodies”, they’d think I was casting aspersions on the level of macho they project.

I enjoyed the sibling conversation on the podcast this episode. You’ve gotten me ready for the holiday homecoming of all my qualifications.

The “hooded jumper”—yes, we call that a hoodie. If it’s knit, it’s a “hoodie,” if it’s made out of the same sort of material that sweatpants are made from, we also can call it a “hoodie,” but we also might call it a sweatshirt or hooded sweatshirt.

The “feral youth”—the sort of 1950s, James Dean, West Side Story term is “hood”. I call them “punks.”

Just wanted to say that your music at the end was wonderful! I wasn’t prepared for the singing…expecting just some instrumental thing…well done! And I always find it interesting that people with accents (er….not American?) tend to sound very American when they sing. I wonder why that is.

Love the podcast. I am writing from the US. I’m a fan and wanted to post a review of your podcast but iTunes won’t let me. Apparently since my account is US based I am not allowed. The error message I get says I can’t “purchase” anything on the UK site. I contacted support and told them I’m not trying to “buy” only trying to post a review on the UK site because the podcaster is from the UK. His advice was to “report a concern” so I reported it as a “problem”. Sorry. If you can figure this out you will get a lot more American reviews. In the meantime you can “change country” from your iTunes Store home page (all the way at the bottom), once in the USA you can search for your podcast and see the American reviews.

Going back to my teaching job in early September has set me back badly in my knitting and my podcast listening, so I just got to your newest episode this afternoon. What a treat from start to finish! And I just had to go take a look at the Champagne Fizz hat after your description set me off laughing. After seeing the photos – and it almost seems an abuse of the model that Interweave includes bonus (!) photos – I have to wonder if perhaps the designer had a hand in those hotel curtains.

I loved your story about the last WWI veteran, Harry Patch and I would love to tell you another story, a story about Betty. Over twenty years ago, my family and I moved to a house in an older neighborhood. There we found that our next door neighbor was a retired WWII nurse who served aboard Navy ships during WWII. During the years she told us war stories and baked the most unbelievable desserts I have ever tasted. My dogs used to crawl under the fence and spend the afternoon sitting with Betty in her backyard. We only found out that they were doing that when they received homemade dog biscuits from Betty for Christmas. The years went by and Betty succumbed to senile dementia, eventually having to go into a convalescent hospital. The end of the story is the end of all our stories. We found out that Betty had died. She will be buried with full military honors at Fort Rosecrans, a national cemetery. My family and I will be attending her funeral, and I will probably cry, but not for Betty’s death, but that such an unique personality is gone and we will never see her like again. As with Henry Patch, the world has lost something unique and special.

Am sure you and your colleagues are doing a brilliant job and everyone remembers good teachers for the rest of their lives.

Thank you so much for your delightful podcast. I especially appreciated your essay regarding failure…I am the librarian in a very small public school here in Connecticut. Our students do very well (we must endure state mastery tests every spring) academically, but recently we’ve been trying to focus more on the “affect” dimension of personhood, rather than constantly chasing test scores. Your words helped bring home the importance of caring about the whole child, not just her/his potential for academic success.

I laughed till I cried when you described your battle with the flying insect! You were describing me should I be careless enough to leave the door open to allow huge moths to get into the house. About the Britain’s Got Talent show. I watched the YouTube version like so many other people, I got the link from a friend who sent it to every email address she had.
The most amazing part is the way the judges had to eat their attitudes. They were embarrassingly snooty at the beginning of the clip, and then apologized fairly gracefully at the end. That does not happen on this kind of show, so it was extreme entertainment. It just takes so little time it isn’t what stands out in memory.

Ms. Boyle frankly enjoyed herself in that clip, and you don’t get to see that often either.

On my itunes, all the episodes are in the right order!

One reason I like buying patterns or books – beyond supporting the designer – is that I love the objects themselves. A pdf is a bit harder to love, though… but they’re almost always so affordable, that it’s not a struggle to pay up. Though I’m annoyed at the Berrocco website – I would like to buy just one pattern from a series they have, but I’d have to buy the whole booklet – I guess a bit like just wanting to buy the single, not the album…

On the subject of failure as in your podcast, I’ve been knitting the Miss Marple Rowan Cardigan for nearly two years! It’s coming up to its THIRD frog just when I thought I’d reached the end ribbing on the back – it was a mistake too big to leave and *sob* I’ve had to rip back nearly to the top. Gutted. I’ve blogged about it on lisamargreet.blogspot.com and asked the advice of Raveler’s several times. My sister says the cardigan is cursed!

Still, the one thing I always say when teaching people how to knit is that it teaches you patience and how to be zen. Sometimes you’ve just got to rip it up and start again! Top tip: Do it quickly – like ripping a plaster off or waxing a bikini line. Or if you’re too attached to your project you could always ask a friend to do it!

Mistakes are how you learn.

Did you hear about how Obama, who has recently and for obvious reasons moved to DC, was telling people that his daughters were shocked when they got a snow day for so little snow – in Chicago, one of them said, not only would it NOT have been a snow day, but they’d have been sent to play outside for recess.

I think I’m having a bit of a similar experience in terms of the difference between the London vs NYC reaction to 6 inches of snow. It ONLY takes six inches of the stuff to grind everything to a halt??

This was a really good read, especially as I didn’t see the programme. My body is happy at a size 14 – I have a kind of Lily Allen-ish chunky figure, and I gain weight much more easily than I lose it. I had a moment a few years ago at a family party when I suddenly realised that all the women in my family have the same figure as me. Sounds daft I know, but until then I had alway beaten myself up for not being taller/skinnier/less curvy. It’s interesting hearing your experiences from the other side of the BMI scale!

I’m in the interesting position of being able to relate to both experiences of over- and under-weight. For most of my life I was about your size, and got all of the accompanying comments that you still get. Then bam, I hit my late 20s, moved to grey London, and got the dreaded ‘Heathrow Injection’. On a slight tangent, did you know that a great number of human ideals of female beauty involve the woman being ill or stop her from moving normally in some way?

Our own western obsession with thinness (anorexia is only a disease in the west – other people don’t get it); chinese foot binding (though they don’t do this anymore), burmese women and their neck rings, some african women who are overfed to the point where they’re so big they actually can’t walk; even Japanese kimonos were originally made to constrict a woman’s movement; she had to learn to walk with tiny tiny steps.

Luckily, there are other cultures that aren’t so bad, where women have more equality / power. The Kuna of panama expect women to cut their hair short and wear beautiful handmade blouses.

I have to confess I’m a Halloween-avoider. Once when I was at uni, I dressed as the anti-me: i.e. instead of my usual (at the time) all black, I wore all white. No-one got it. And that was the most effort i could be bothered with. Snarky, eh?

I don’t take the tube very often – preferring to walk and take the bus when I can – but when I do, I always have some knitting!

I’m nervous about Twitter. I already spend too much time in front of the computer. So it’s not for lack of interest in what you’re doing that I’m not engaging with it… btw, got my hair cut at fish yesterday and was really pleased!

Rog produces this russian band back in NYC and they have a song that starts “A thousand crows upon my head…” which, even though the music is a tiny bit too “heavy metal” for me, I find to be a killer first line – the imagery is intense.
