[...] Harvest Bird with The needle and the damage done: I had mantras, straws at which to clutch, that worked for some of the time. In moments of lucidity I could laugh at their disparate origins. A partly-remembered maxim from a former counsellor: that the ability to cope with uncertainty is a sign of mental health. Viv Richards, murmuring to the interviewer in Fire on Babylon that “I always backed myself”. Back yourself to raise this baby, I murmured in turn, not actually saying a word but imagining myself speaking through gritted teeth. The universal message of my colleagues, that they thought us best equipped among parents to take care of a child with the disability the numbers offered us. People wouldn’t consistently say that just to be nice, I reasoned, even in a workplace culture that prizes niceness above many other things. [...]

Misheard pop lyrics are the best lyrics. They usually get right what the original songwriter got wrong.

My impression is that people who have children with Down's Syndrome tend to be either religious families who don't believe in abortion, or wealthy, older families who can afford the time and extra expense in raising a Down's child. This almost makes such a situation a luxury for the wealthy, which is an odd way to look at disability, or indeed life in general.

It is good to read you again. For me life is a question, sometimes silence speaks, other times demand, that each moment is precious, never leaves me.

Oh, the curse of not having a Twitter account. Re this from your Twitterspatter:

>Among the things I have failed to achieve in my tenure as branch prez, getting people to convert .docs to .pdf as a matter of course is one.

This probably doesn't apply to anyone in your purview anyway, but as a matter of general practice it's worth noting that the .pdf format is mostly inaccessible to the visually impaired (mostly in that it's completely inaccessible to a screen reader in .pdf form and can only be hacked, unsatisfactorily, into a more accessible format if the content isn't locked).

I put this up with the intention of entering it in the Takahe poetry competition, but their "no prior publication" rule extends to cover all media! (For some hard copy, I can lend you the first number of Pasture, if you wish! http://kilmogpress.blogspot.com/2011/07/journals.html)
