How lovely to engage again with the rhythm of your writing hb. I remember how we walked amongst the beautiful/ugly 'things' and, at the end, looked at each other in delight!

I hope there will be many more such moments to come...

A secondary theme of so much of my out-of-town friends’ Twitter-chatter of old, which I thought of privately as their sense of the contemptibility of Christchurch, has long gone quiet.

I'm surprised at this (that it used to exist, that is). As a lifelong Aucklander, I've never thought of Christchurch or anywhere else in NZ as in the least contemptible, and have often been taken aback by the reciprocal Auckland-hating I've come across from time to time. I read recently that routine anti-Auckland feeling is on the wane in Christchurch as a result of Aucklanders' earthquakey help: other than allowing for the natural resentment Christchurch people must surely feel towards anyone at all not having to live in their situation, I hope that's true, as senseless divisions between us are the last thing we need - ever, and in particular now. Ich bin eine Christchurcher, without a fraction of a doubt.

I was thinking of you, and your dad, the other day, listening to National Radio, and hearing someone say that some of the cathedral bells had been sent to be repaired. Sad news about the cathedral, and yet I have a sense of regrowth about Christchurch, as people start to recover rhythms and routines, and to find new ways of being in their city.

I love the commenter who refutes the Resilience blog post. Of all things most striking me post 2008, Pike River, Rena, Christchurch earthquakes - is the developing counter argument.
Questions, we are these questions.

[...] Harvest Bird with The needle and the damage done: I had mantras, straws at which to clutch, that worked for some of the time. In moments of lucidity I could laugh at their disparate origins. A partly-remembered maxim from a former counsellor: that the ability to cope with uncertainty is a sign of mental health. Viv Richards, murmuring to the interviewer in Fire on Babylon that “I always backed myself”. Back yourself to raise this baby, I murmured in turn, not actually saying a word but imagining myself speaking through gritted teeth. The universal message of my colleagues, that they thought us best equipped among parents to take care of a child with the disability the numbers offered us. People wouldn’t consistently say that just to be nice, I reasoned, even in a workplace culture that prizes niceness above many other things. [...]

Misheard pop lyrics are the best lyrics. They usually get right what the original songwriter got wrong.

My impression is that people who have children with Down's Syndrome tend to be either religious families who don't believe in abortion, or wealthy, older families who can afford the time and extra expense in raising a Down's child. This almost makes such a situation a luxury for the wealthy, which is an odd way to look at disability, or indeed life in general.
