It’s bad enough that legislators in the pockets of agribusiness overturned a majority vote by the people of Missouri, but to inflict a massive increase in fees on shelters by way of retaliation is unthinkable.

At the urging of the puppy mill industry, legislators have lumped nonprofit shelters into the same category as for-profit breeders. Now shelters are being told to deal with the damage caused by irresponsible breeders, and are being charged for the privilege of doing so.

Perhaps attaching this amendment to the blasting safety bill was a bit of unconscious irony; let’s hope the courts blast it out of existence.

Absolutely Barbara! Most people just don’t realize how dangerous it really is for cats outdoors. All of our cats are rescues in one form or another and none of them are allowed outside. At least not until we build a cat enclosure for them someday.

This story also applies the free-roaming indoor/outdoor owned cats, not just ferals. Loosely owned, outdoor cats are attacked by other animals, are hit by cars and are just as likely to contract diseases such as FIV.
Animal regulatory authorities receive calls every day about stray and ‘feral’ cats who are abused by humans. Don’t let this report be ‘fuel for the fire’ to unnecessarily target and kill under-socialized stray cats.
In a maintained colony, life isn’t as harsh as some would think. Let’s make feral cats lives even better by cooperating with proven TNRM programs.

Thanks Deb! I was only basing that on personal observation not just for myself, but with people I’ve met online and through veg meetings, etc. Although maybe it’s just that they are vocal that I’m aware of them. Hmmmmm, maybe we should poll this to see.

thought provoking. you made one comment about most people assuming there is no compromise when they first get involved with animal rights causes. i’m wondering about that…. for years, i was one of those vegetarians who didn’t make too many waves bc i didn’t want to be thought of as a freak, plus i had plenty of personal issues on my overloaded plate. i wonder if more women tend to take the soft line approach from the start, a kind of survivalism. just a thought.

Forgot to mention (apropos of nothing!)-

I lost a load of weight just simply by going vegan from vegetarian. By eliminating egg (because it’s usually from barn/battery hens – and a lot of “free-range” is suspect in terms of welfare), I also eliminated so much other processed food “crap”. And, wow! What a differnce to how I feel! I had no idea the veggie to vegan transition would be so beneficial!

Just thought I’d share this!
