The concert in Newberg was pretty close to capacity as far as I could tell. But the hall is much smaller and we only play one concert there each year. It's a big event for the area, however.

I am curious. How well was the Newberg concert attended? I am so sorry I couldn't hear this program. It sounds like it was a very good one. I second Dan's wish for a world-class hall in Portland. Alas, I fear we will never see one in our lifetime. Finally, I would agree with Dan that this season has been an especially fine one, characterized by fine soloists and high-caliber orchestral playing.

I'm glad you've been able to validate what we've been hearing in the audience!

To be honest this is the first season since I moved to Portland (1994) that I've been really psyched about OSO. For years I'd gotten comp/student/last minute tickets and while the performances were enjoyable I never found myself scheduling my social life *around* upcoming concerts... that is until this season. :) There have been more magical/sublime/superb moments this season than in the past seven seasons in my opinion. That's not to say that past performances were poor or lacking but rather that the orchestra has gotten *that* much better!

Now if Portland had a world class concert hall...

Casals –– great cellist and fearless freedom fighter. Just finished the 4th suite in Siblin's "The Cello Suites". Casals did more than his share in the fight against Fascism.

What a terrific shot of Cage. Hulking over that little keyboard, he actually looks like he could be doing a guest shot on "The Addams Family." He seems to have his hair slicked in this photo, which increases the resemblance to Macy. Usually it goes to curls.

Oh, and, Bob: Mick Jagger and Don Knotts? Priceless!

I am so disappointed that I cannot attend the concert this afternoon and will miss the 6th symphony. However, I enjoyed your comments KB and would add as I have on many occasions that we are so fortunate to have a music director who has brought so many wonderful pieces to Portland for the first time. I hope that it is not another 60 years before the 6th symphony appears again in Portland.

This particular concert has been a "Can't Miss" one since I saw it first announced last year .Any chance to hear Delius and Vaughan Williams "live" is catnip to a frustrated Anglophile like myself. The last time I heard any Delius done was some years ago when Norman Leyden did his "In a Summer Garden" . It's amazing but not surprising that it has taken over 60 years for the RVW 6th to be finally played in Portland ... and then only ONE TIME this Sunday afternoon !!?? Yes, there is a lot of rage and mystery in the work but I agree with the composer .... it's less to do with WW2 than with something else. I've thought for a long time that the 6th Symphony is something of a homage to his very dear old friend, Gustav Holst. Listen to the Mars and Neptune movements from The Planets in particular to see what I mean. It"s perhaps more about an old man ( VaughanWilliams) communing with his memories ?? Whatever is "behind it", the 6th Symphony is a masterpiece who's time has come ! Thank you, Carlos , for introducing it to so many this weekend .

Wow - I never connected the dots and figured that you were Burton's daughter! I had a great experience working with him at Tanglewood. Very elegant player, and had lots of incredible fingering ideas for tricky excerpts like Daphnis. His recording of Don Quixote (w/ Yo-yo) was the first I heard. I also cannot imagine a more different pair of guys than Burton and Joe!

Wow – I never connected the dots and figured that you were Burton’s daughter!

I also grew up with Joe's kids: they still spent their summers at Tanglewood, and we went to the same summer camp. Of course we went to that camp because Joe's kids went there! A nice Italian day camp in Pittsfield, MA.

Bravo, Carlos, Elaine and the Oregon Symphony! This is very exciting.

I can see everyone's stock rising. There will be so many ways that cross-pollination between these two wonderful groups of players will occur and stimulate the organizations, and our city.

If anyone can do this, and do it well, Carlos can.

Carlos,

Thanks so much for the reply! I hesitated to write my comment above, but it was what was on some patrons' minds, so I thought it was fair to put out there as a concern. We're of course glad to share you with our Spanish colleagues - maybe we could do an exchange residency someday?
